Work Text:
“Kris, the only reason you get to study with us is because you're dear friends with the lovely Noelle. Do not forget we are still rivals, I am just feeling extra generous today.” Berdly spewed his everyday nonsense while unlocking the library door so they could all study.
There was no reply from Kris, but there was from Susie! “Well, what made you so jolly this morning, you kiss a girl or something?”
“No, Susan, I did not.”
“A boy? Happy pride, I guess.”
Noelle giggled as Berdly continued fiddling with the door.
“An enbyyy~?” Susie eyed Kris, but Kris ignored her. No one could see Berdly's face, but he froze for a second, then blushed, and finally unlocked the door and pushed it open.
As they walked in through the door, Susie whispered into Kris’ ear, “He didn’t say nooo.” Kris elbowed Susie in the stomach and kept walking. Noelle checked up on her, and she just gave a thumbs up and smiled, trying to seem nonchalant.
They all sat at a table and began their study session.
~30 minutes later~
The lights started flickering, then went out.
“Yeah, no more studying!” Susie cheered.
“Worry not, the power should come back soon. In the meantime, we can use our phone flashlights to do our study!” Berdly seemed immensely proud of this idea, but everyone else groaned.
“Berdly, it’s okay if we take a break for a bit, maybe we could go on a walk and come back when the power is back on!” Noelle suggested. Everyone enjoyed this idea more.
“Okay, fine, but not for long, finals are very important!”
Berdly got up and walked towards the door, but as he reached for the knob, it locked on its own. He tried to unlock it, but it immediately locked again.
“What’s the holdup?” Susie asks.
“The...the door, it keeps...locking on its own?”
“Heh, yeah, nice try Berdly,” Susie pushed Berdly out of the way and tried opening the door on her own and was shocked to find out he was telling the truth.
“Okay...that’s weird, not a problem, I’ll just kick it open.”
“Um, Susie...I don’t know about that,” Noelle said.
“Trust me, bells, it’ll be-"
Kris tapped Susie’s shoulder, then pointed to the window.
“You think we should go through the window?”
Kris nodded, yes.
“The window is for emergencies only; therefore-“ Berdly said with his pointer in the air before cutting off his words when he saw Kris trying to open the window.
“Kris, what are you crazy?! That’s for emergencies only!”
“Berdly, it’ll be fine, loosen up a bit,” Noelle said in a sweet tone, how she usually speaks.
This didn’t make Berdly feel any better, though.
“Uhm, guys... the same thing that happened to the door is happening to the window,” Susie informs them. “Guess we’ll have to do something else until the power comes back and also until someone comes and gets us out of here,” She continues.
“Like study.” (Do I even have to say whose line this was🥹 :’> )
“Don’t worry, Berdly, we’ll go back to studying soon,” Noelle reassured him.
Susie grabbed Kris’ water bottle out of their bookbag and raised an eyebrow, implying something.
“If you’re implying we have a bottle flip challenge, I will beat all of you. I posted bottle flip videos on YouTube back in 2018, so you all can kiss that win goodbye and call me the bottle flipping champion...or just CROWN me champion because-“ Berdly was cut off since Kris started laughing under their breath. “What are you chuckling at, Dreemurr?”
“Nothing, nothing, keep talking.”
“Anyway, I was implying we play spin the bottle, but your idea is way funnier, HAHA,” Susie said, laughing along with Kris.
“Um, I-I thought Susie’s idea c-could be fun?” Noelle whispered.
Kris nodded in agreement.
“Alright then. Berdly, you down? ... unless you’re scared?” Susie smirked.
“No, no, pfft, what would I, Berdly, be scared of?”
“Cool, want to go to the computer lab?”
“Sure, Susie!” Noelle agreed.
They all went into the computer lab, Berdly using his phone as a flashlight.
“I’m going to get Kris’ phone just so we have another flashlight for some extra light. That’s cool with you, Kris?” Susie asked.
Kris just gave their usual thumbs up. Susie walked out of the computer lab and was on the way to grab Kris’ phone when they saw this purple light between two bookshelves and decided to check it out, and there she found this little flying creature.
“wh-...what are you?” Susie whispered to the little purple thing.
“Oh, hello up there! Names Fairyhausen!”
“Fairyhausen. That...is your name.”
“That’s right!”
“Okay...what are you, Fairyhausen?”
“I am a fairy! I curse people during the month of June!"
“HOW can you be homophobic when your name is Fairyhausen?!”
“I’m not, it just happens to June every time!”
“Whatever you say. Are you ever going to uncurse us?”
“Yeah. Soon, worry not!” Fairyhausen informed Susie before disappearing into the bookshelf.
“If I ever see you again, I’ll squat you like a fly, Fairyhausen!”
Susie grabbed Kris’ phone and then walked back to the computer lab.
“I’m back, did you miss me?”
“I’m sure Noelle did.” Berdly snarked.
Noelle’s face went red, and she shot Berdly a look. Susie chuckled.
“Anyway, who’s going first?” Susie asked.
Kris raised their hand.
“Go ahead then, spin the bottle, Kris.”
Kris spun the bottle with no hesitation; they barely worried about anything ever, but now their only worry was if it would land on Berdly, but not for the reason you might think. They weren’t worried about kissing Berdly because they disliked him or anything; they were worried because Berdly isn’t out to anyone but Kris (which was weird since he always acts like Kris is his rival), and they didn’t know if Berdly would be uncomfortable kissing an enby in front of a group of people, especially since Susie is always teasing him.
It felt like it was spinning forever, not just the bottle, their thoughts too. Finally, the bottle came to a slow stop, and when they looked up, it was pointed at their “rival” ... Berdly. Berdly looked nervous as hell. Kris wondered if he was even going to do it or if he was going to run away.
“I-I must kiss Dreemurr, my rival!? Not happening!”
“Tsundere!” Susie exclaimed, barely even knowing what that word meant; she only said it because Berdly uses it a lot.
“What!? I am not a tsundere!”
“If you’re not a tsundere, then just kiss Kris and prove it’s not a big deal.”
“That’s not exactly how being a tsundere works, but if it’ll prove something to you, then I guess so, only because that’s how the game works and it’s not a big deal or anything because there is ZERO feelings behind it.”
Kris leaned in and put their hand on the back of Berdly’s head, then pulled him closer, closing the gap between their lips, kissing him. Berdly got nervous and pulled away quickly, as Kris had expected. And for the first time ever, Berdly had nothing to say.
Even Susie could tell the feeling in the room was awkward, so she started talking to break the silence. "Is now a good time to tell you guys I saw a fairy out there"
Berdly was too busy thinking to tell Susie how ridiculous that was.
"Oh, that's really cool Susie!" Noelle said, sounding genuinely interested.
'She cannot be serious. Oh Noelle, such a deredere.' Berdly thought to himself, not listening to whatever nonsense Susie was on about. He tuned back in when he could feel Kris staring at him.
“-and then I told him I'd kill him for cursing us during pride month! So, let me know if you see him because that's our ticket out of here, Fairyhausens death.”
“Well, we have to go find him them!” Noelle said feeding into Susie's crazy theory.
“Not until after your spin.” Susie smiled and handed Noelle the bottle. Noelle’s whole face went red.
Berdly got up suddenly. “I'm gone back to studying.” He said coldly then left.
“Okay, see you soon, Berdly!” Noelle said, waving goodbye.
After a second Kris also got up and left but didn't bother saying anything.
“Don't be smooching out there haha!” Susie joked.
“I should be telling you guys that.” Kris remarked.
Noelle started blushing even more.
“What are you waiting for, bells? Spin the bottle”
“th-theres only two of u-us, Susie”
“Okayyy well what if you spin it and if it points at me then we kiss and if it misses me, we still- I mean don't kiss...”
Noelle was too nervous to say anything but spun the bottle in agreement.
She watched intently as the bottle was spinning, waiting for it to stop, praying it landed on Susie, her crush of a long while....and when it stopped, it wasn't what she had hoped for; the bottle was pointed nearly 90° away from Susie.
Susie just stared at Noelle in silence then quickly grabbed the bottle, moving it so it pointed to her, then just went in for the kiss, putting her hand on Noelle’s cheek and the other around her waist.
Susie then pulled away to ask if what she was doing was okay because somehow, she wasn't even thinking before.
“I'm sorry, is it okay if I continue kissing you?”
Noelle was speechless and just nodded her head yes; it didn’t even look like she heard anything Susie said because she was too busy admiring her.
~back to Kris and Berdly~
“Hey, Berdly.”
“What do you want, Kris?” Berdly scoffs.
“Ah what happened to “Dreemurr”?”
“Nothing...just...why'd you come out here?”
“Would you ever want to third wheel Susie and Noelle?”
“...”
“That's what I thought...but also I wanted to talk to you.”
“About what?” Berdly asked not looking up from his sheet of paper.
“How are you?”
“...I'm worried.”
“What's worrying you, blue?” Berdly suddenly looked up and turned his head in both directions as if to see if anyone heard what Kris said.
Kris chuckled and said "Don't worry, they can't hear us"
“don't you have like a word limit or something?”
“No. I'm not a 2022 YouTube shorts pov. Now tell me what's wrong.”
"Fine, let's sit somewhere else..." Berdly said as he got up and walked behind the front desk he works at then sat under it. Kris followed, then sat close to him, and Berdly began talking.
“Even though I don't believe in the idea of “coming out”, I just don't want the others to know I'm LGBTQ+ since that information might get around to my parents and they might ban me from hanging out with you all. And that's also the reason I don't want them to know about us.... I like you a lot, Kris, I don't want to lose you, but if my parents find out, they'll ban me from seeing you”
“It's okay, we’ve only been dating for a month. We’ll tell Susie and Noelle whenever you're ready.” Kris wrapped their arm around him, he put his head on their shoulder.
“I... I think I'm ready”
“Are you sure? You just told me you were worried it'd get around to your parents.”
“I-I know I did just say that, but we can just tell Susie and Noelle not to tell anyone, I'm done pretending you're my “rival” that was the old us.”
“That was only like last month till we made out...and you were still convinced we were rivals even after that.”
Berdly covered his face in embarrassment and because he was blushing like crazy. Kris started laughing.
“You ready to go back to hanging out with the others?”
“Not quite yet.... we didn't exactly have time to finish what we were doing this morning since Noelle knocked on your door with Susie, ready to go to the library...”
“Oh yeah? Refresh my memory, what were we doing?” Kris teased him.
“I believe you had me against a wall”
“You're such a dork...” Kris said, getting on top of him. “...I hope that against the floor is close enough,” Kris continued then began kissing Berdly until they heard a door open and tried to get up at once but hit their head.
“Fuck.” Kris whispered then successfully got out from under the desk to make eye contact with Susie.
“Hey, Kris...wait what were you doing under the desk?”
“Susie, you have lipstick on your face.” She didn’t actually; Kris just said that to change the subject and also to see what Susie would say.
Susie whipped her mouth with her sleeve and saw nothing come off. “Hey no I don't!”
“HA so you guys did kiss!”
“Shut up, Kris! So where is Berdly?”
“Um... I am... unsure.”
“OH MY GOD IS HE UNDER THE DESK?!”
Kris looked down and Berdly was covering his face but then accepted defeat and got up from under the desk.
“Me and Kris have been seeing each other...just please don’t tell anyone” Berdly told Susie.
Susie’s jaw was to the ground. “Can I tell Noelle?!”
“I was just about to tell her myself but where is she?”
“Uhm she's still in the computer lab; I just told her I was going to check on you guys.”
They all go back to the computer lab to see what Noelle was up to.
“GUYS! GUYS! SUSIE, I CAUGHT THE FAIRY, HE’S IN MY HANDS!” Noelle exclaimed.
“OKAY WE NEED A CONTAINER. DOES ANYONE HAVE ONE?” Susie asked.
“You can stop yelling, and I have an empty chip bag if that helps,” Kris said, trying to be helpful, not even questioning the fact that Susie was right about talking to a fairy.
“Is no one else wondering how Susie was correct about speaking to a mythical creature?!” Berdly questioned.
Kris reached in their pocket, pulled out a chip bag, and handed it to Susie. Susie held the chip open close to Noelle's hands, ready to catch it.
“Okay...I'm going to catch it; you can let go now.”
Noelle let go and they all saw the glowing purple fairy fly out for a second until Susie trapped it in the bag.
“I got it!!”
She then went ahead to crumple up the bag and vigorously stomp it with her boots, hearing tiny screams from Fairyhausen, the fairy.”
Berdly was still speechless but was furthermore when the lights came back one proving Susie's theory correct.
“That MUST be a sheer coincidence. There was no “curse” causing the power outage.” Berdly protested.
“Let's check the doors then,” Susie said, exiting the computer lab and walking towards the door. She tried the doorknob and to Berdly’s surprise, it opened.
“WHAT.” Berdly was flabbergasted. For once in his life HE, the straight A student genius was wrong and SUSIE, the F student who sleeps through class and carries zero logic about anything in life.... was right.
“Hey would you look at that, it worked! Anyway, you all wanna go to QC’S diner for some lunch?” Susie asked.
Everyone thought that was a good idea and they left, planning on coming back later to finish their studies.
~On the walk there~
Berdly and Noelle were walking behind Kris and Susie, and Berdly decided now was a good time to tell Noelle about him and Kris.
“Hey, Noelle, I need to inform you of something.”
“Of course, what is it, Berdly?”
“Um...me and Kris have kind of been dating for a bit and as your friend I just wanted you to be aware, but please don't tell anyone. Susie already knows, though; we told her just then in the library.”
“That's amazing, Berdly! Thank you for trusting me with this information. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone.”
“Thank you, Noelle” Berdly felt relieved having told this to his friends today.
Noelle smiled.
“Uh, Berdly, I'll be right back!” Noelle went up to where Susie was and politely asked Kris if she could speak to Susie for a second.
“Um h-hey Susie!”
“What's up, bells?”
“I just had a q-question"
“Sure, fire at me”
“I was u-um just wondering......are we like d-dating?”
“Bells...we made out like just then.”
“Sooo yes?”
“For sure, if that's what you wanted!”
“Uh, y-yeah! I'd like that.” Noelle smiled brighter than she had in a long time, she knew Dess would be proud of her.
