Work Text:

Obi-wan has always found peace in meditation, always preferred it to sleeping if he's perfectly honest. Cody disapproves of that, he knows, but Obi-wan doesn't quite enjoy the feeling of being on the cusp of sleep. That tiny period of floating that feels like he's drifting away from his own body has never been a pleasant experience for him.

So, he meditates, relaxed but not so relaxed as to let down his guard. With the war, he can't afford to.

Except around Cody. His wonderful, smart commander who cares so deeply and so wholly that it ripples out into the Force like a blanket of security. Speaking of Cody…

"You may come in, Commander."

The door slides open and Cody steps through, paperwork in hand, bucket under his arm and a warm smile on his face. The sight of that smile alone makes Obi-Wan's shoulders relax. "I still don't know how you do that." Cody remarks, sitting down at the small table in the centre of the room. It's more a coffee table than a work table, but it means Obi-Wan can sit on the floor, so he doesn't really mind.

"Do what, my dear?"

"You just…know it's me. Before I even knock or anything. I don't know how."

"From your Force Signature of course." It's obvious, to the Jedi at least. The Commander is so, so bright in the Force. A sun shining in the dark void of war. His light fills the emptiness in the Force, where lives are lost, Cody's warmth rushes in to replace where their glow had dimmed.

"Forgive me, but…what is a Force Signature? I mean," Cody rubs the back of his neck, "I've heard you and Skywalker talking about it but I don't know what it means, exactly."

"Ah. A Force Signature is how a person, place or thing comes across in the Force," Obi-Wan explains, "Force users can identify individual signatures, no two are the same. It is how us Jedi can so easily distinguish you and your brothers. To us, you look similar but not exactly the same."

Cody hums at that, going silent for a moment before speaking again.

"So….how do I come across in the Force? If you don't mind me asking."

"I don't mind at all." Obi-Wan reassures his Commander, placing a hand over Cody's on the table. Cody becomes incredibly interested in the wall on the other side of the room.

"You feel…bright is a way to describe it, I suppose. You're like a star, warm and brilliant and steady. But…there is more than that." The Jedi closes his eyes, focusing - really focussing on Cody's light. "The Force rings around you, like an orchestra. Every instrument playing the same word over and over….glory." Obi-Wan opens his eyes, smiling at Cody, who looks dumbstruck. It's an interesting look on his Cody. "You sound like glory. Kote. It is a hard sound to mistake."

"I….don't know what to say, sir." Cody mumbles, falling back into the formalities he is so used to. But Obi-Wan still smiles.

"That's okay. What I'm trying to say, Cody, is that your signature…it's a source of comfort. For me, at least. I always…" Obi-Wan trails off, hyper aware of Cody's hand in his now. Promptly, he releases his hold, clearing his throat as he looks away. "I apologise, Commander. I am…very tired."

"No, no, it's…it's okay, sir." Cody murmurs. Obi-Wan chances a glance and smiles. A rosy red flush has managed to work its away across the fearless Commander's cheeks.

"Of course, my dear."
