Work Text:

Light tossed and turned but he just couldn’t sleep. L’s fingers endlessly tapped against his keyboard, his breathing heavy. Light groaned.

“L, go to sleep..”
“I’m not sleepy, you go to sleep.” L responded, eyes still glued to his computer.
“I can’t, you’re making too much noise.”
“I see…” *Interesting. Light is resisting sleep. Does he fear being observed in an unguarded state?* L thought.
“Fine then, I’ll turn off my computer. Now you will be able to sleep.” L responded, shutting his computer and placing it to the side.

L proceeded to sit as he usually does, while watching over Light. *okay…* Light thought and he turned around and attempted to get as comfortable as he could get, with a sleep deprived man who's chained to him watching over him. After a few minutes of uncomfortable silence, light finally broke it.

“Are you going to watch me all night?”
“Why? Are you uncomfortable?” L asked.
“It’s difficult to relax with you staring right at me. Also, could you get some sleep too?”
“... Okay, I will try.”
“Thank you,” Light said, turning away.

L also attempted to turn away, but the chain was just too short for both of them to be facing the opposite direction. So, L turned to face Light. Light shifted uncomfortably, he didn’t like the feeling of the chain against his shoulder. He, too, decided to turn to face L. His eyes widened in surprise when he saw L’s face, he hadn’t known that L was facing him before. He felt L’s breathing against his face. L’s eyes fluttered open.

“Light? You seem extremely flustered right now, is there a problem?” L asked, showing what seemed to be genuine concern.
“Yes, yes. It’s just that–” Light thought for a moment. *It would be weird if I told him I felt flustered by his face being so close, right? Afterall, we are both men.* “I-It’s nothing, just.. Go back to sleep.”
“I wasn’t sleeping in the first place, but okay.”

Awkward silence filled the room. Not only could Light not sleep, but his heart was now racing out of his chest.

“L…”

L slowly opened his eyes.

“Yes, light?”
Light shifted uncomfortably. “I can’t sleep.”
“Would you like to talk to pass the time?” L said considerately.
“Sure… What do you want to talk about?”
“Hm… How is college going for you?”
“It’s fine… not much is going on.” Light stated.
“Oh.. I see… How is your relationship with Misa going?” L asked, slightly averting his gaze.
“It is… well, good I guess.”

Silence. It wasn’t an odd question to ask at all, but for some reason it felt different with L. Why would L be asking about Light and Misa’s relationship? Was this part of the investigation?

“Great, have you– ahem.. kissed her yet?”

Suddenly the room got felt , and the gap between them seemed a little smaller. The brunette breathed in abruptly, clearly thrown off guard by the question. L looked deeply into Light’s eyes, as if he was attempting to look into his soul.

“A few times, mostly on the cheek.” Light looked away quickly, while muttering something under his breath. Something the older one couldn’t hear.

The silence continued for a while longer. The brunette tried his best to look anywhere but L, but his gaze kept falling upon him. He was worried the black haired individual could hear his heartbeat from how fast it was beating. Why was Light so flustered, he pondered. I mean, they were both men with no interest in each other at all… right?

The silence was broken abruptly by the older one. He began staring intently at Light.

“Surprisingly, I’ve never kissed anyone before.”
“R-Really?” Light responded, now staring directly at L.

It was true, L had never kissed anyone in his entire life. He had always wondered what made it so appealing, was it the feeling of their tongues overlapping with each other, or just the intimacy with a person you love? Could just a small press against someone's lips with your own feel that nice? He licked his lips.

Did Light and Misa ever make out before? Did it feel good? How long did it last? Was there a string of saliva connecting them afterwards? Did they feel closer? Did it feel nice?
Now Light and L couldn’t stop staring at each other, or more specifically, each other's lips. Light got a little closer, still staring as intently as before.

“Have you ever wondered how it feels?” The younger one said with an inhale.
“Well, yes. As one does.” L said, feeling heat rising up to his cheeks. Thinking about it was one thing, but talking about it was a whole new experience.

L got a little closer this time, convincing himself in his mind that it was just because he was cold, as if he wasn’t always cold.

“It feels nice. As if you’ve finally connected with the other person. It feels warm against your lips.” Light said.
“I see..”

L leaned in closer and closer, finally Light did too. Their breathing got heavier and the room felt hotter. The walls felt they were closing in on the two. This was not a normal conversation anymore.

Their lips connected suddenly. It was just a peck at first. After L’s first kiss, his lips did feel warm. So did his entire face. It was a new sensation. He concluded in his mind that no matter who you kiss, it must feel this good, Light was just a normal guy after all… right?

One peck wasn’t enough for Light though, as he dove in for even more. This time the kiss was more intimate. First, their saliva wet each other's lips, allowing them to kiss more passionately. Then the brunette's tongue invaded L’s mouth, exploring every part of it. The older one's tongue wrapped around the brunettes, both fighting for dominance. Light raised his hands and held the back of L’s neck, pushing them even closer together. It was as if they wanted to become one, they kept getting closer and closer. Their legs were intertwined while L’s hand went up Light shirt, caressing the smooth skin underneath.

After about what felt like a million years, their lips separated. Light's eyes slowly opened, while L’s never left his. The younger individual was panting, his lips coated with saliva. He was blushing from his cheeks to his neck. L wiped some drool off the side of his mouth.

The black haired one finally understood why humans loved kissing so much. It provided enough closeness to feel intimate with your lover, but didn’t take away their oh, so beloved purity. It left your lips tingling afterwards, and your cheeks warm. You would feel like you could be with that person forever, and you just want to hold them tightly in your arms. L refused to believe it could ever be love, it was just arousal. It’s a normal human reaction to want to protect and love someone who you’ve shared such an intimate experience with.

After minutes of silence, except for the sound of their panting, Light finally spoke.

“L… what did we do..” Light said, after finally catching his breath.
“What we did was completely normal.” L said reassuringly, though he wasn’t very sure himself. “Let’s just… not talk about this anymore.”
“I see.” Light responded, looking slightly hurt.

He had just made out with the man who suspects he is Kira, but he did not feel any guilt whatsoever. The exchange felt so… natural, he didn’t see a reason why it was bad. Making out with Misa didn’t feel that way, so what was this new feeling? Why did it feel so much better with L?

Light's eyes felt heavy, and eventually he drifted to sleep.

The next morning L and Light acted like nothing at all happened. It was completely normal, it had to be.

They could never see how much they truly loved each other.
