Summary
It is 3:14 AM when the graphite begins to move on its own. Locked in his basement and starved of sleep, Mike Wheeler watches in terror as a phantom pencil tears into his old D&D notebook. It is Will’s handwriting—jagged, erratic, and desperate. Will is trapped in the freezing dark of the Upside Down, and the paper is their only bridge. But just as the messages shift from a plea for survival into a raw, devastating confession of a love hidden since they were twelve, the pencil snaps. The page goes completely blank. Then, the telephone rings. Miles away, Will’s physical body has just been found in his bed—comatose, unresponsive, and mysteriously freezing to death from severe hypothermia. While the doctors rush to stabilize a boy whose heart is failing, and the Byers family collapses from grief, Mike is the only one who knows the horrific truth: Will isn't brain-dead. His mind is still trapped alone in the ice of the dark dimension, believing his final words went unanswered. Driven to the brink of madness, Mike has to fight a world that thinks he is losing his mind just to find a way back to the page—and pray he isn't already too late to answer.
