Work Text:
Rick took a deep breath, adjusting his clothes in the mirror.
Today was the day.
He checked that the little box was still tucked inside his sweater pocket, before walking out of the room. He and Christian had decided to take a walk out on the pretty dirt paths that winded through the sweet smelling woods of Georgia. That's where he was going to pop the question.
He had decided to do it somewhere private, simple, quiet. This seemed like the best place and time, when a genle cool breeze danced through the grass and set the air temperture as his favorite time of the year. Sweater weather, but not freezing. Just right, a little chilly. The time of year when you could put your arm around someone to warm them up.
He did just as they walked, listening fondly to Christian talk about their latest testing at his labs, and his delight with his new fall students.
Rick chose to do it when they stopped for a minute to look up at the pink sky. He knelt down slowly, reaching for the ring box.
Christian noticed he was kneeling, looked down, and knelt beside him.
"The sky is really so pretty this time of year," Christian said, still crouched beside him.
"Christian?" Rick pulled out the box.
"Mhm?" Christian turned his head back to look at him just as he opened the ring box, revealing the beautiful silver wedding ring inside.
He looked confused for a second before his jaw dropped.
"Christian, will you marry me?" Rick asked, holding his breath after the words left his mouth. Christian stood there looking stunned.
"Christian?" Rick asked, concerned. "You alri-"
Christian through his arms around Rick's neck, saying "Yes, yes, yes, I will, I do, yes of course." The weight overbalanced him, and they fell back slightly, laughing and crying.
"Rick I love you." He kissed him. It was awkward, at the wrong angle, and messy.
It was also the best kiss of Rick's life.
When they broke away they were hugging again.
"I love you too, I love you so much." Rick hugged him like he might float away.
They laid their foreheads against eachother. There lips pressed together, but it was less of a kiss and more of just them smiling against each other's mouths.
It was the best day of both of their lives.
Well… at least until the wedding that is.
Maybe it was cheesy or silly but every day he woke up with Rick beside him was somehow better than the last. A wedding band would remind him on the daily, that even when he wasn't with his husband, he was always there.
Neither of them could wait for this wedding. Somehow there was a feeling it might top all the other best days they've had.
