Work Text:
The night is deep and full of mist, cold air seeps into the cave and Parrot shifts in his sleeping spot next to Wifies.
It seemed no matter what happened they were always running from someone hunting them down.
The wind shares no secrets, no calls for their death. But Wifies feels a feeling far from peace on his watch. He couldn't bear the thought of letting his guard down and getting either of them killed.
The other stirs beside him keeping him from his thoughts for just a moment. He sits up and stares at the entrance of the cave, not saying a word. Infact his mouth is tightly shut and he seems to be looking at something Wifies can not point out.
"It's not time for your watch yet go back to sleep."
Parrot doesn't break from his trance all he does is just stare and stare. He lets out a small sigh, "Can't."
"Are you having nightmares again? What's troubling you this time?"
"I... " The breath catches in his throat audibly and he doesn't speak for a good ten seconds after.
"I wonder sometimes if this will ever end. If there will ever be a time where we are at peace, you know?"
"Yeah I do know."
"And it's like.... Everytime we fight the closer we get to death. The threat is advancing rapidly before we even have the time to grab a weapon."
"And you just want to escape it all I assume? Run away from the world again?"
" I- I don't know. I know I wouldn't truly be happy there, but at least I would be away from all of.....this.What do you think?"
Wifies stands up from his spot and walks outside of the cave, to no one's surprise, Parrot follows.
"I think we shouldn't just give up because all seems impossible, we have beaten the impossible before. But I also think we should still be careful on the fights we pick. Not every war has to be ours."
The stars in the sky shine through the thin clouds, the rain has stopped by this point but the ground is soggy beneath their feet. It's hard to see anything but outlines of the trees.
Parrot doesn't look at Wifies. He gazes up at a certain pair of stars that he always does, the only two touching stars in the night sky. They look like just one big star through the clouds. His response is more stubborn than silent.
"Yes but it still does feel wrong to leave this world behind. With all these people struggling. I mean we have to help."
Wifies turns to look at the stars aswell, he feels a head fall onto his shoulder and a body lean into his with all of its weight. He places his head on top of the others.
He had been like this for as long as Wifies knew him. That mask of stubbornness that he pretends is real for himself. That mask he lets slip away the moment he feels he is safe.
"Parrot, the only life that you can control is your own. You shouldn't risk it just to save others you barely know."
He turns his head and the words blend with Parrots multicolor hair. Greens fade into the color of flames just like his wings.
"I mean you say that but... It's just we can't leave everyone to die. What would this world be if they were all just gone?"
"If everyone was gone then the world would be free of conflict. If it has to end up just being us then so be it. You are the only reason I am here Parrot."
The other yawns and laughs a little surprisingly.
"Now go back to sleep I still have a couple hours of my watch." Parrot gives Wifies a little bird nudge before walking back into the cave and immediately passing out.
-
The world flickers in and out. Wifies stands on a pressure plate.
After all he had done to protect Parrot they had ended up here. He was the one who put him in danger now.
-
The compass still burns on the ground as Wifies looks up at Parrot with a desperate determination in his eyes.
"Parrot I will not stand here and watch you lead yourself to your death. I can not bear to witness it ....please....just come with me."
-
"I'll remember you as the Wifies I use to know
The Wifies who got them *out* of danger with his mind, not into it. The Wifies who would sacrifice himself for Parrot, not sacrifice them both. The Wifies who would go to death with Parrot if the other was too stubborn to see it. The Wifies who would get them out of situations like this.
-
The cold is bitter at the top of the mountain, but neither of them shiver. Snow coats their jackets, not melting enough to soak.
" The beacons are a sign that we are still here Parrot, that we are still fighting."
-
The spyglass makes a loud *click* as it lands on the pressure plate and Parrot steps off
"It's all yours."
And yet even after he had killed his friends, Parrot still kept the spyglass. He had hope in him this whole time, wanted him to change. Believed he could change.
-
Spoke laughs in the background as they stare at each other in horror before Wifies look quickly changes to one of acceptance.
" The secret Parrot, it's all yours. If either of us are to hear it, it should be you."
-
Parrot disappears over the staircase. Wifies doesn't stop staring.
He had gone too far. In a fit of thinking this was the only way to protect them, he ruined them both, more than anything else in the world. Parrot had lost hope in him.
-
There is an approaching storm in the background, Parrot once again is going on a mission that could get him killed. Wifies holds him by the arm and begs.
"Parrot I only want the best for us I don't understand how you can't see how terrible of an idea this is"
The other pulls away from his grip with a look of anger mixed with pain. He looks at him like he is completely gone.
-
Wifies turns to look at the spyglass
(Did he truly loose hope? Or did he know that hope could no longer save them? )
-
The sun is hot and it is a time before all of this. Before the chasing and the chaos. A time where they can eat melons as a refresher as they work on the base.
Parrot stands besides Wifies as he always has, smiling up at the roof they had laid out together.
" Parrot I am glad to have you as a friend."
-
He runs off the pressure plate, diving to grab the spyglass.
The fizzing of the tnt sounds. He doesn't look back up to see if Parrot heard it. He stares at the spyglass in his hands, rubbing his finger along the lense.
For a moment , it was all his. Everything in the world was, he had control.
He didn't want it to be all his anymore.
He should've just let it be all theirs.
