Chapter Text
Naruto had a problem.
Unfortunately, the problem was Kakashi. Specifically, Naruto wanted to put something of his on Kakashi permanently. Which was a completely normal thing to want.
Probably.
The issue was that if he simply walked up and said, "Hey, Kakashi, can I tattoo something I designed onto your body forever?" there was a very real possibility that Kakashi would stare at him over the top of his book for three seconds and then vanish in a swirl of leaves.
Naruto had standards. He wasn't going to embarrass himself like that. So he did the obvious thing.
He became a seal master.
───
Three years later, Naruto slammed a stack of notes onto Tsunade's desk.
"I did it."
Tsunade glanced up from her paperwork. "You've said that seventeen times this month."
"No, seriously. I actually did it."
That got her attention. Naruto practically vibrated with excitement as he spread diagrams across the desk. At first glance they looked like ordinary fuinjutsu arrays. At second glance they looked horrifying. At third glance they looked revolutionary.
Tsunade sat up.
"Naruto."
"I know."
"Naruto."
"I know!"
"Tell me this isn't what I think it is."
Naruto grinned.
"It lets a non-Uchiha turn the Sharingan off."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Then Tsunade stood so abruptly her chair nearly fell over.
"Get Kakashi."
───
Kakashi arrived an hour later. Late as always. Nobody was surprised.
He took one look at Tsunade's expression and immediately sighed. "Why do I feel like I'm about to become a medical experiment?"
"Because you are."
"Wonderful."
Naruto shoved the seal diagrams into his hands.
"Read."
Kakashi humored him.
Five seconds passed.
Ten.
Fifteen.
His visible eye narrowed. Then narrowed again. Then widened.
"Kakashi?" Naruto asked.
Kakashi was still staring.
"You made this?"
"Yep."
"This is functional?"
"Yep."
"This isn't theoretical?"
"Nope."
Kakashi looked back down at the paper. His pulse was suddenly very loud in his ears. For decades, the Sharingan had been a drain. A leak he had learned to live with because there had never been another option. The exhaustion was so familiar that he barely noticed it anymore.
This seal—this impossible, insane seal—would stop it. Completely.
"You tested it?"
Naruto puffed out his chest.
"Only for three years."
"Three years?!"
"I wanted it perfect."
Something strange twisted in Kakashi's chest.
Three years. Three years of research, of effort. Three years spent solving a problem that wasn't even Naruto's.
"Kakashi?"
He looked up. Naruto suddenly seemed nervous. Which was unusual. Naruto was fearless in battle. Fearless in politics. Fearless in arguments. Yet now he couldn't quite meet Kakashi's eye.
"If it works," Naruto said carefully, "would you let me apply it?"
The room went quiet.
Tsunade slowly lowered her face into her hands. Shizune made a choking sound. Naruto looked confused.
"What?"
"Nothing," Tsunade said immediately.
"It sounded weird when he said it," Shizune whispered.
"It did."
"I didn't mean it weird!"
Kakashi hid a smile behind his hand.
"Apply the seal, Naruto."
Naruto lit up like the sun.
───
The procedure took six hours and the seal stretched across Kakashi's left shoulder and down his chest in elegant black lines. It was subtle. Beautiful.
Naruto's hands shook slightly as he finished the final stroke.
"There."
Kakashi looked down.
The ink shimmered. The chakra pathways became connected. The seal activated. And suddenly—silence.
Not literal silence.
The room still existed, people were still talking, but the drain was gone. The Sharingan sat quietly in its socket. Dormant, controlled, his. For the first time since receiving it, it was actually his.
Kakashi froze.
Then he reached up and activated it. The eye opened. A moment later he shut it off again. No strain, no pain, no loss, nothing.
The room blurred, not because of the Sharingan, but because his vision suddenly wasn't entirely steady.
Naruto's grin softened.
"Pretty cool, huh?"
Kakashi laughed.
It came out rough.
"Naruto."
"Yeah?"
"Thank you."
The words felt inadequate. Hopelessly inadequate.
But Naruto's smile turned gentle.
───
The first week was chaos.
The second week was terrifying.
The third week caused official complaints.
Because apparently Kakashi with full chakra reserves was a public safety hazard.
"That's impossible."
"It isn't."
"It is."
"It isn't."
"It is."
Might Guy pointed dramatically across the training field.
"YOU CLEARED AN ENTIRE LAKE WITH ONE JUTSU."
Kakashi blinked.
"Was that unusual?"
The collective screaming could be heard three districts away.
───
The real problem started two months later.
When Kakashi realized he was happy.
Consistently.
He woke up rested. He trained because he wanted to. He read because he enjoyed it. He laughed more. Smiled more. Spent more time around people. And every time he traced the seal hidden beneath his clothes, he remembered who had given him that freedom.
Naruto.
Always Naruto. Naruto who had spent years creating it. Naruto who had looked at a burden Kakashi had quietly accepted and decided it wasn't acceptable. Naruto who had fixed it just because he could. It was difficult not to think about someone after that. More difficult when that someone was Naruto. Impossible, really.
───
The realization hit Kakashi during a council meeting of all places.
Naruto was arguing with three elders simultaneously. He was winning and looked alive, animated, bright. Every person in the room was watching him. Including Kakashi. Especially Kakashi.
Oh.
Oh no.
───
He was in love.
───
Kakashi spent two weeks pretending this discovery wasn't happening.
Naruto ruined that plan immediately, as usual.
"Hey."
Kakashi looked up from his book. Naruto sat beside him on the memorial stone. Close. Very close.
"You okay?"
"Fine."
"You've been weird."
"I've always been weird."
"Weirder."
"Fair."
Naruto studied him and then smiled.
"You know, I was really nervous about the seal."
"The seal that changed my life?"
"Yeah."
Kakashi stared while Naruto rubbed the back of his neck.
"I kinda wanted it to matter."
The confession was quiet and vulnerable.
Kakashi's heart did something catastrophic.
"It mattered."
Naruto looked relieved.
A little embarrassed and a little pleased. And suddenly Kakashi understood. Naruto hadn't spent three years designing the seal because it was practical.
Well.
Not only because it was practical. He had wanted to give Kakashi something. Something permanent.
The realization settled between them.
Warm, gentle, and dangerously hopeful.
Kakashi reached up and touched the hidden seal through his shirt. Naruto's eyes followed the motion. A small smile appeared. And for the first time, Kakashi thought that perhaps he wasn't the only one who had been trying very hard to say something without actually saying it.
After all.
Nobody spent three years inventing a miracle for someone they didn't care about. And nobody carried a miracle beneath their skin without thinking about its creator every single day.
Maybe it was time they both stopped pretending otherwise.
