Work Text:

Now, Tendou liked to believe that he could keep his emotions in check. After taking so much harassment and bullying, he’s learned to not react, saves giving them the satisfaction.

But, there is a time or two when Tendou lets the ugly emotions show.

Oikawa, Oikawa, Oikawa. God, he’s never hated a person so much in his life. Honestly, he’s just your average guy with a pretty face and cocky attitude. Tendou can admit the guys a good setter, great even. But, he still loathes him with every fiber of his fucking being.

“Did you hear? I think the captain of the Sehjio volleyball team and Ushijima-San are a thing!”

That was the comment that started it all.

At first, Tendou laughed. Ushijima? And Oikawa? God no, Oikawa wouldn’t go near Ushijima even with a 10 foot pole! But the more whispers he heard, and the more he began to look closer, he realized the rumor could most possibly be true.

Oikawa’s name constantly spilled out of Ushijima’s mouth. Oikawa this, Oikawa that—“he would be better suited for our team”—bullshit.

Tendou honestly couldn’t take it anymore! Just hearing “Sehjio” made him want to jump off a damn bridge!

Still, it was satisfying to see the look on the team’s face when they lost to his blocks. It was enough to satisfy Tendou’s mood a bit.

Then, he actually ran into Oikawa.

Oikawa started it, he always does. “Where’s your dear ace you always cling too, freak?” He’d say.

Tendou, usually, would be the bigger person and walk away… keyword, usually.

This time he bit back. Oikawa wanted to start shit? Fine! Let’s start some shit!

Tendou was honestly surprised at how well Oikawa was able to put on a show. His insults and petty remarks never slowed, it was one right after the other. Tendou could feel the sick satisfaction in his gut. This is what he needed, he needed to see Oikawa loose his shit for once.

“The fact you act so confident in your sets, only for them to be snuffed out by blockers half the time, makes me wonder if you act all confident and cocky just for some fucking show! Desperate for attention much?”

That, made Oikawa pause…

Tendou smiled, he’d won, like—

“How fucking dare you.”

Tears tracked down Oikawa’s face, angry and hot. And the moment they fell, was when Iwaizumi decided to show up.

“What the fuck did you do!?”

Tendou should’ve stopped, he should’ve said sorry, he should’ve done the adult thing and shut up, yet instead—

“What? It’s not my fault your future captains a little bitch!”

The punch flew before he could dodge, hitting him right on the cheek.

Honestly, Tendou didn’t expect this to happen. But the action and the situation just made him even more furious. He started to laugh like a damn hyena, wiping away the blood from the cut on his lip.

“That’s all you got!?”

“Keep talking and see what happens—!”

“That’s enough.”

Ushijima stepped protectively in front of Tendou, “you need to leave.” He told Iwaizumi.

Iwaizumi looked like he wanted to say more, but he decided not to go against Ushijima. He glared at Tendou once more before ushering Oikawa away, whispering what Tendou assumed was words of comfort.

Ushijima waited until they were gone, then turned to Tendou. “Let’s go to the infirmary.”

Tendou said nothing.

So, yeah, that’s that story on how Tendou got decked in the face by Sehjio’s ace. All because he couldn’t stand the fact of Ushijima possibly liking someone other than him—

“Satori?”

Tendou blinked out of his trace, “sorry, Ushi, deep in thought.”

“What happened?”

“Oikawa and I just got into a squabble and I made him cry—purely on accident by the way—and I guess Iwaizumi couldn’t handle seeing his dear setter cry like a—“

“Satori.”

Tendou paused, then sighed, “yeah, yeah… I’m sorry.”

“You shouldn’t be apologizing to me, you should apologize to—“

“He fucking started it!”

“That doesn’t mean Oikawa is fully at fault.”

“God, don’t even say his fucking name—it’s all I ever hear now!”

“What is it about Oikawa that you don’t like—“

“I don’t like him! Okay!? Isn’t that enough of a reason!? He’s bratty, he’s an asshole, he’s cocky, he insults me—and the team—every possible chance he gets! He’s taking up all your attention, he’s bitchy, he’s—“

“What makes you think he’s taking up all my attention?”

“He’s all you ever talk about! It’s all—‘Oikawa would be better suited for our team’ and ‘he should’ve taken Shiratorizawa into consideration’ and ‘he brings out the best in his players’— if i didn’t know any better, I’d say you have a stupid crush on him!”

Ushijima blinked, “a crush?”

“Yeah! Y’know like—you like him… romantically… you wanna date him… that kinda stuff.”

Ushijima blinked again. Then, to Tendou’s utter surprise, Ushijima let out a huff of amusement.

“That’s absurd.” He said plainly, smile on his face.

“Wha—but—the rumors—people were saying—“

“I cannot stand Oikawa outside the court.”

Tendou opened and closed his mouth, “pardon?”

“While, yes, I do think he has talent and is a great player, dosen’t mean I like him as a person… truthfully, I cannot stand him either.”

“…so, you don’t like him?”

“No, I don’t like him, never would I even consider him an option for a romantic partner.”

Tendou had nothing to say…

Ushijima lifted a rubbing alcohol coated Cotten ball and softly pressed it against the cut on Tendou’s lip.

“OUCH—warn a guy will ya!?”

“Apologies.”

Tendou just grumbled and looked away.

“It dosen’t look bad,” Ushijima said, “It should heal in a day.”

“Lovely.”

Ushijima threw the Cotten ball away, then without warning pulled Tendou into a hug.

“Woah—what is happening?”

“Can I not hug you?”

“No, you can just—not used to you of all people initiating things like this.”

Ushijima just hummed, holding him a bit tighter.

Tendou smiled despite himself, and hugged Ushijima back…

Damn, guess he had more of a crush on Ushijima than he thought…
