Today was the first day of Summer Break, rising from your bed you quickly scrambled out of bed once you realized you had free time. Your computer cool and sleek, awaiting your return as you quickly shuffled into your chair. Clicking on the Roblox application you waited as it loaded up, the fans of your computer turning on with a soft hum. It was the summer of 2011, so while Roblox didn't have too many great games, it was good to play while you were waking up, then maybe you'd play Portal or something better than just Roblox.
The Screen of your computer lit up with a small sound as Roblox launched, you could play Natural Disaster Survival, Flood Escape, or Dodge teh Teapots. Dodge Teh Teapots looked fine enough to play, especially while you were still rubbing sleep from your eyes. You clicked play and loaded into a busy server.
There was around 10 people competitively running, dodging, sliding, and jumping around and over teapots. The chat buzzing with taunts, hoorays and cries as those who got hit with teapots respawned and those who touched the end cheered on the winning platform before teleporting back to the start. Once you finished loading in you quickly dashed into the chaos, sliding under Teapots and weaving around peoples avatars. The fine porcelain of the teapots shattered and sent shards flying through the air, easily cutting skin or stabbing out and eye or two if you weren't careful. Luckily even if you did get hit you'd immediately teleport back to the start. You slid under one Teapot before diving behind a wall for some semblance of shelter before having to sprint out from behind it again due to another teapot hurling in your direction. Dashing from slight shelter to shelter you were already halfway done the course, that was until you came crashing into someone.
You ran straight into someone's back, the last thing you see before both of you got hurled into the sky void of the course was a blue plaid jacket and slightly curly pink hair. There was no pain in respawning of course, however you did find yourself on top of the player you crashed into. "Hey!- Get off!" She snapped as she shoved you off. Underneath the blue plaid jacket was a black shirt with the words "I PWN" on it, she had white bunny ears and a blue cap on top of her head. "Sorry!-" you quickly scrambled backwards off of her. "I almost won come on!!" She cried as she looked back at the obstacle course and where she had been, just a few steps away from the stairs up to the winning platform. "Hey I said I'm sorry..." You mumbled as you looked down slightly. The girl huffed, crossing her arms for a few moments before she sighed and let them fall to her sides. "Whatever, it's just a game." She sighed out. "My name is Skatingrease" She offered a hand to shake and you awkwardly shook it.
"Skatingrease... Uhuh, your... avatar is pretty I suppose" you said, struggling to come up with a compliment due to being thrown into this situation, literally. "Hey thanks! Yours is too!" She said with a smile as her eyes seemed to light up a little. "Need help getting to the end? I win this game a lot." She asked as she gestured to the Teapot Obstacle Course. "Yeah sure..! I'm a bit rusty and I just woke up." You said as she lead the way. "Just follow my lead!" She said with a small smile as she dashed into the wall of flying teapots and shards. You both zig-zagged through the people, the teapots and the shards. Your footsteps following in Skatingrease's as she dodged and took cover. That was until she got hit in the face with a cyan Teapot, to which she was instantly teleported back to the start, you froze, your brain short circuiting as you realized you didn't have anyone to follow, and in that small little hesitance you also got hit in the face with a teapot.
It took you both a few tries to perfect the 'pattern' of running around through the people and the teapots. But once you nailed it and touched down on the winning platform you both cheered. "Hey! We did it!" Skatingrease said excitedly as she jumped up and down. "Yeah thanks!" You said with a small smile on your face, she was kind. "You free for a friend request?" Skatingrease asked as she tilted her head with slight curiosity. "Hey, sure." You shrugged, why not, she was a bit fun to play with. "You play anything other than Roblox?" You asked. "Uhh, kinda!" She answered with a small hesitant shrug. "Mostly Roblox." "Good to know!" both of you exchanged friend requests before Skatingrease looked around. "Hey, it's a bit lonely in here, mind if we go play something else?" She asked.
You looked around too, the previously busy server had turned into a ghost town in minutes. It was just you and Skatingrease. "Oh, I didn't even notice everyone leave." You remarked, it was just a little eerie, nothing else. "Yeah.. Hey lets play something else, okay?" She asked, looking increasingly paranoid as she looked around. "Is something wrong?" You asked her before she shook her head, maybe a bit too quickly. "Um, nothing, nothing, just, I'd rather play somewhere else." She said as she glanced around again. "...If you say so..." You mumbled with a shrug as you went to go exit the game.
You tapped the exit game button only for it to not work, you tried again, and tapped the exit game button, once, twice, a few times, it wasn't working. You exited the menu and looked back at Skatingrease. "Hey uhh.. the button isn't working." you said as you pointed to your menu, only to realize hers wasn't either, no matter how many times she pressed it, she cussed under her breath.
After a few more seconds of fiddling with the button, the screen glitched for a moment before a loud, and definitely haunting and slightly bit-crushed voice came through your headphones. "Oh Hailey dear, who's your new friend?" Who was Hailey, and why couldn't you move your avatar anymore. "Hailey?- who's Hailey?" You asked as you attempted to move your avatar but found yourself only able to move your eyes/camera angle. Behind both of you, was a pristine animatronic-looking avatar, segmented joints like a doll and on top of it's head sat a small well worn hat. "Can't you buzz off for one day!?" Skatingrease shouted. "Hmmm, no." It hummed softly before walking over to you and Skatingrease. "Hello Hailey's new friend, my name is DataGen." It smiled as it put your head almost condescendingly. "Who- Do you know them?" You asked after a moment of confusion as you glanced back at Skatingrease. "I wish I didn't." She answered as she glared daggers at DataGen who just smiled back at her. "It's only the thing that's been RUINING MY LIFE!" she snapped before DataGen chuckled and pat her head next. "Irrational as ever." He commented before shifting his glance back at you. "You know, you're a cute one aren't you." He said, his tone somehow lightening a little? Or were you just hearing things.
"Seriously, who is this guy." You asked Skatingrease as your brow furrowed at the thing in front of you. "Stupid computer virus thing." She answered simply before DataGen tutted and shook his head. "Such a crude way of explaining things, Hailey." "So, malware?" You asked, and you would have tilted your head if you could, but currently you couldn't move. "Yup." Skatingrease said as she rolled her eyes. "I think I've had enough of you butting in, Hailey." DataGen commented with what could have been a glare before she was muted from chat. "So, you." He continued as he turned his unblinking gaze towards you. "You're her new friend, no?" He asked.
"Well- yea-" you were saying before he cut you off. "Mhm, well you'll certainly be seeing a lot more of me then. Maybe, perhaps, for other reasons too." You and Skatingrease raised your eyebrows at him and that statement. "What?" You asked before he giggled. "Cutie." He said before you were kicked from the game.
"You were kicked from this game: Smile for the camera! He Comes."
You blinked at the error message before looking up at your webcam, which was on for some reason. You looked at it for a moment before taking it and turning the privacy slider on. That thing was Malware right? Maybe it was best to stay off of your computer for a bit.

After he was done toying around with Hailey he slipped back into the digital darkness, his code and files retreating back from where they came. He needed a moment to think, for he had felt something he wasn't sure he'd ever feel before. Was it a sort of attraction? He never thought he'd find a human attractive. But as his files repeated those brief screenshots and videos he got from your webcam before you covered it he smiled, or would have. You were just adorable, even for a human. He'd make sure to see you again, you and your cute face. He'd probably just get Hailey to hang out with you more so he had more chances to 'coincidentally' appear and see you.
