Behind the Mirror Lights

Summary:

She'd never met anyone as frustrating as Choi Soobin.
Unfortunately for her, he'd never met anyone as frustrating as her either.
What begins as a rivalry fueled by clashing egos and wounded pride slowly turns into something neither of them expects. With the rest of TXT watching the chaos unfold from the front row, keeping their distance becomes harder than either of them would like to admit.
Two stubborn hearts. One growing attraction. Far too many witnesses.

Notes:

Welcome to my first AO3 story!
I've been working on this for a while, and I'm excited to finally share it. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Chapter 1: Shared Spaces. Stolen Glances.

Chapter Text

[INT. BACKSTAGE VANITY TRAILER – EVENING]

The moment you opened the door, your heart sank.

Of all the people in the world…

Of all the schedules, all the trailers…

You were assigned to share a vanity trailer with Choi Soobin.

And he was already there.

Tall. Silently beautiful.

Legs crossed. Hoodie slightly off one shoulder. Brushing through his hair with one hand and scrolling on his phone with the other. His eyes flicked up when you entered, like you’d disrupted his peaceful kingdom.

“Seriously?” he said, not even bothering to hide his tone.

You closed the door behind you. “What, you own this trailer now?”

He didn’t smile. “I thought you were using trailer B.”

“I was. They reassigned me.” You dropped your bag on the farthest counter, pulling your hoodie sleeves up as you unzipped your kit. “Don’t worry. I’m not thrilled either.”

He scoffed. “Neither am I.”

The silence that followed was sharp. You could hear the static hum of the mirror lights between you. And every move he made — every swipe of his concealer stick, every flick of his bangs — got under your skin.

---

[MOMENTS LATER]

You fought over the outlet.

He unplugged your curling iron for his hair straightener.

You moved his water bottle.

He moved your chair.

It was so petty, so frustrating... so charged.

You didn’t even know how the tension started. You just knew you refused to back down.

At some point, your elbows touched as you both leaned in toward the same mirror.

You glared. “You need the whole mirror?”

“You act like your reflection needs that much space.”

You blinked. “Wow. You’re more annoying than I expected.”

His eyes locked with yours through the mirror. “You’ve thought about me?”

Your breath hitched. “I meant your type. Tall, smug, and allergic to personal space.”

He didn’t answer. Just smirked and went back to brushing his hair.

But something in the air shifted. Slightly. Secretly.

---

[LATER THAT NIGHT – TRAILER, DIMLY LIT]

Most staff had cleared out. You stayed behind to fix a prop.

Soobin was scrolling quietly on the couch, hoodie now pulled over his head, socks off, one leg folded under him.

You didn’t say a word. Neither did he.

Until a knock on the trailer broke the silence.

A random photographer pushed the door open, camera in hand. “Hey—can I get a shot of the TXT leader chillin’ backstage?”

You started to say no — but Soobin stood first.

His voice was low but firm. “She said no pictures. Please leave.”

The man looked surprised. But backed out.

You blinked. “I didn’t say anything.”

He shrugged. “I heard your silence.”

Your chest tightened.

---

[A FEW MINUTES LATER]

You sat on the couch, exhausted, the trailer lights dimmed to a low glow. You didn’t hear Soobin move until he stood in front of you — hoodie still on, face unreadable.

“I’m gonna sit,” he said, and before you could ask what that meant—

He carefully laid his head down on your lap.

Your heart nearly stopped.

“Are you—”

“I’m tired,” he murmured, closing his eyes. “And you feel safe.”

You didn’t move. Couldn’t. Your hands floated awkwardly for a second, then landed in his soft dark hair.

Your fingers began to move — slow, uncertain at first. Then rhythmic. Gentle. Soothing.

His breathing slowed.

Your heart didn’t.

Soobin’s voice was soft, barely a whisper:

“I hated you at first. Thought you were full of yourself.”

You didn’t answer.

“But now I kinda get it,” he added. “You’re just… good at pretending to be okay.”

Your fingers paused. He opened one eye lazily, meeting yours.

“I see you now,” he said.

And just like that…

You were no longer just “sharing a vanity.”

You were sharing something else.

Something that wouldn’t stay secret for long.
