Work Header

you’ll be in my heart

Summary:

James said it was normal. That his body was working overtime. That he was allowed to have all those emotions, it just meant he loved their baby.

God, their baby. Theirs. That was still weird to say even though it had been months.

Work Text:

Will sleeps a lot these days.

It’s all he’s bloody good for at this point, sleeping.

Once upon a time ago, he’d have tons of energy thanks to a few coffees and filming for the day. Now he could barely open his eyes for a few minutes before he’s closing them again.

It sucks, but people try not to make him feel bad about it. ‘You’re growing a human, lad, get some sleep while you still have the luxury.’ Aye, but they didn’t say growing a human would cause him to become an exhausted leaky mess that cried more than James did these days.

Bloody hell, James.

The man had the patience of a saint with him these days. He took his crying fits (and sometimes, the Geordie abuse around some of them) as well as any other incidents that affected Will or the baby he was carrying like they were badges of honour. It infuriated him because he shouldn’t be pissing and crying over such stupid shite all the time, but James said it was normal. That his body was working overtime. That he was allowed to have all those emotions, it just meant he loved their baby.

God, their baby. Theirs. That was still weird to say even though it had been months. Months of saving money, buying tack, moving flats, being back in the same space since they were in their early 20s, just with two less roommates and one on the way. One that had their own room that was only half assembled, but already had so much love put into it. It was almost too hard to fathom.

Which is why when Will wakes up from his nap not leaking out of any orifice for once and feeling something buzzing on his stomach, his first idea is to panic. It’s only when when he looks up does he see the long strands of dark hair that belong to his boyfriend as well as his nose which is nudging his belly button - having only recently popped out along with the rest of him - the buzzing feeling coming from James’s lips that are practically skin to skin with what possibly could be baby’s head or arse.

(Of course, the sprog likes to make it hard about which part of it is actually on the surface, constantly slipping about like a fish in a fishbowl. Will’s ribs will never be the same, that’s for sure.)

He’s unsure of what James is actually doing at first, not wanting to move in case something important is happening that will be fundamental with their parenting style later on (something James is kind of obsessed with lately), but it will become more clear when James’s voice becomes slightly louder and the quiet of their bedroom. “…for one so small, you seem so strong, my arms will hold you, keep you safe and warm…”

James hasn’t sung much since he got pregnant. Or at least, not around Will as much. He claims it’s because he’s working on his album while he’s got the chance and so most of his inspiration is going towards that. Will knows it’s more than that - possibly something to do with his father now that he’s about to become a dad himself  - but he doesn’t pry unless necessary.

Given James has been trying to better himself recently with his sobriety and his therapy visits, it’s not a long stretch to think he’s telling the truth about it being just music that’s bothering him, the whole brooding artist angle that he goes for here and there, but Will missed this side of him. James has already soft, but he’s even softer in person and Will has a privilege to see that every day unlike most; he’d be a damned man if he gave that up.

So, in this moment, if Will feels something soft and gooey come into his heart, he tries not to let it get to him as he feels the littleun flutter about in response to being serenaded, his eyes already starting to water from being overemotional, but unwilling to disturb his partner as he continues to sing quietly under his breath, hands dithering about and stroking small arcs up and down the curve of Will’s stomach as he does. “…you’ll be in my heart, yes, you’ll be in my heart…”

Instead, Will simply closes his eyes and snuggles back into his pillow with a smile on his face as the feeling of being taken care of sinks in and carts him back off to dreamland.

(Thankfully however, he does eventually get treated to a live performance of James singing said lullaby in the hospital room after their son is born two months later, watching the sunlight dance around them as James holds him in his arms, staring at his little face the entire time as Will watches them so he can commit it to memory.)
