Work Text:
Donnie did not overwork or sleep too little. Let’s make that one thing clear. He was actually going to sleep at a reasonable time—even though it’s only for tonight—at 3AM.
But, of course, before going to bed, he just needs an eeny tiny bit of his, oh so precious, coffee! He’s not addicted, mind you. He just needs it to function properly. And, yes, he’ll be able to fall asleep perfectly fine after drinking caffeine. He does it all the time—well, he usually passes out instead of falling asleep, but still. One is his body shutting down for some necessary sleep, and the other is his body abruptly shutting down for some necessary sleep. It’s nearly the same thing.
He didn’t expect to find any of his brothers at the kitchen. Sure, he had coincided with Leo several times before, either because his insomnia was acting up and he needed some tea, or because he just woke up, those were always awkward. An early riser, his brother. Leonardo was definitely sleep deprived.
However, he had also found Mikey before. One time he was dancing while he made a grilled cheese sandwich and talked to Ice Cream Kitty. That didn’t weird Donnie out at all. After all, it’s normal Mikey behavior. The other times were when he had just woken up and making breakfast. Mikey was is weird, he either wakes up at 6 or at 11AM, there’s no in between.
The three of them have got some messed up sleeping schedules.
There was also the one time he found Master Splinter eating some shredded cheese right out of the packet. They don’t talk about that (Donnie could swear that his father spent the next morning training throwing glances at him).
It’s safe to say that the ones with the closest thing to a healthy sleep schedule were Raph and their dad—ignoring that one time—. So, no, he wasn’t expecting to find anyone in the kitchen at this time.
Besides, if anyone were in the kitchen the lights would be on.
So he walked inside, his feet dragging across the floor, and turned on the lights.
And there, sitting on top of the counter, elbow-deep in a jar full of cocoa powder, was Mikey. His mouth was full of the brown powder and his eyes were wide as plates. He snapped his neck towards Donnie’s direction when he saw the light turn on, instantly making eye contact.
What the shell.
Donnie’s mouth gaped open like a fish out of the water, his hand still resting on top of the light switch.
And then, slowly.
So. Slowly.
Mikey opened his mouth and ate a fistful of powdered cocoa. He munched even slower than he had moved, never blinking or breaking eye contact even as he coughed because some of the powder got in his lungs.
Not a single word was exchanged.
Donnie turned the light back off and walked out of the kitchen backwards. The instant he clicked the light switch the sound of more munching could be heard as the jar rattled while Mikey’s hand grabbed more powder.
Midnight strolls to the kitchen were weird.
But they turn normal when you remember they’re a family of mutant ninjas.
And right now?
He could do without coffee.
For now...
