Chapter Text

“I’m breaking up with you.” Patterson’s words were gentle, but heartbreaking. Coy’s mouth was agape slightly, but he couldn’t find the right words to say. Pattersons gaze stayed focused on Coy waiting for a response.

Patterson had told him during lunch to meet him by his locker after school, which was strange since Patterson has told him he doesn’t like being seen with him outside of their lunch table, but he didn’t expect that he was breaking up with him.

Their six month anniversary was last week, in which they spent the whole day together. Where Patterson was on his phone the whole time, disinterested in anything Coy had to say. But still. That didn’t mean they were doing bad. That just meant that… they weren’t doing good!

“Is this like… a joke? ‘Cause it’s not funny if it is.” Coy laughed slightly in shock. When Patterson maintained eye contact with him and didn’t say anything, Coy had his answer.

“What the fuck, Pat? We’ve been dating for six months, I thought we were doing good? My mom loves you!” Coy sputtered out, tears forming in his eyes.

“I’m sure she does.” Patterson nodded. “I don’t think this relationship is healthy. And.. you know, I care a lot about my grades and my sport. I need to focus, and this relationship is distracting. I have an F in science, you know that?” Patterson explained.

“I can help you, Pat, I can tutor you. I’m really good at science. I’ll stop bothering you so much, and being clingy. Please, you can’t leave me. I’ll do anything, just don’t leave me.” Coy’s voice broke as a tear spilled out of his eye.

“This is why, Coy. I think we’re not a good fit anyway. And to be honest, my dad hates you.” Coy frowns. He thought his dad was awesome. Why was Patterson being so blunt about this? “To be honest, I only dated you to get closer to Hannah—or, Hanbon. But it doesn’t matter anymore since she’s got that new kid. Whatever. I have football practice to get to. See you later. Glad this ended on good terms.”

Coy was too shocked to even say anything. What the fuck just happened. He couldn’t comprehend anything. More tears fall spill out as he gasps out a sob. He covers his mouth to stifle the horrible noises. Their relationship meant nothing to him, and it was just to get closer to his best friend. Coy pulls out his phone.

Coy: habon

Coy put his phone in his back pocket and wiped his face furiously. He was so, so mad at Patterson. And himself. He could’ve prevented this. Maybe if he bought him more stuff for their anniversary and wasn’t as clingy as he was. It was so obvious Patterson was uncomfortable, fuck. He wants Patterson to hold him as he cries, but Pat is gone.

Coy cries for five minutes, and after five minutes, his phone starts ringing. Hanbon. He slides his phone and pulls it to his ear.

“Coy? Coy, where are you?” Hanbon’s panicked voice rang out from his face. “I’m at the front of the school, just tell me where you’re at, I’ll come find you.”

“No, no. It’s fine. I’m coming up now, just wait for me. Please.” Coy mumbled his words, sniffling. He hung up on Hanbon and made his way to the front entrance of the school, where Hanbon’s car was parked at.

As Coy walked out of the school, Hanbon immediately walked out of her car. She slammed the door shut and ran to Coy, almost stumbling over herself and falling. Coy would’ve smiled if it weren’t for how devastated he is right now.

“Coy!” She whined as she finally made it to him, wrapping her arms around his waist, pulling him in a tight hug. Coy realized he hadn’t stopped crying. He let Hanbon hug him, but he didn’t move a muscle.

Hanbon pulled away, and looked at Coy’s face. Her own face dropped instantaneously, looking pissed. “What the hell is wrong with him? Holy shit, Coy, you look horrible.”

“He said he needed to focus on his grades and his sport. And that I was distracting him.”

“You’re joking, right?” Hanbon smiled in disbelief. When Coy didn’t respond, Hanbon groaned. “Of fucking course he said that! He’s an asshole! Coy, we’re having a sleepover tonight, ok?”

Coy nodded and Hanbon took his hand, her grip soft and firm. They interlinked fingers, and they started walking back to her car.

———

“So, what’d you bring?” Hanbon asked when they arrived in her room finally. She had first dropped off Coy at his house where he packed for the sleepover.

“Uhm— I forgot. Let’s see.” He unzipped his bag and moved it upside down, pouring everything out. The most prominent thing that Hanbon saw out of the five hundred things he packed was a stuffed animal bear that held a heart.

“Coy, seriously?” Hanbon whined. She grabbed the stuffed bear and threw it at him. Coy caught it easily and sighed. The stuffed bear was the one that Patterson bought him when he asked him out. And it was the only gift he ever bought for him.

“Sorry, Bon. I miss him.” Coy apologized, not really meaning it. Hanbon sighed, grabbing a squishy that Coy packed too.

“Everything that he bought you or gave you goes out there.” Hanbon pointed at the window. Coy shook his head in disbelief and smiled softly.

“Love you, Bon, but no way.”

A couple hours into the sleepover, and they had a random movie playing in the background while they made matching bracelets with the old beads Hanbon found.

“What do you think will make him want me back?” Coy asked his 500th question about Patterson, making Hanbon groan. “Do you think if I made him jealous he would want me back?”

“Jealous how? No offense Coy, but you don’t really have any other friends except for me and you’re openly gay.” Hanbon squinted her eyes in confusion.

“I don’t know.” Coy whined. “I could find some random to be my boyfriend and be super open about it and that makes Pat jealous.”

“First, stop calling him Pat. Second, what if you become like him? Dating a guy to make your ex jealous. That’s almost as bad as him dating you to get closer to me!

“Then what if I fake date someone? And they know that I’m only doing it for my—uh… ex.” Coy still wasn’t able to wrap his head around the fact that Patterson is his ex now.

“Really? You’re gonna go up to a guy and ask him to fake date you to make your ex jealous? You’re gonna need to bribe them at least. And to do that you’re gonna need to know them well to know what to bribe them with.”

“Then I’ll just ask them what they want and get it for them. Geez, Bon, you’re so strict.” Coy finished the last bead on his bracelet and tied it, fitting it on his wrist.

“Okay, whatever. We skipped past way too far. Who would you even ask?” Hanbon was still putting the letter beads on the string. She had dropped her bracelet 5 times.

“I could ask….” Coy abruptly stopped, an idea popping into his mind. “Holy shit.”

“What, what?” Hanbon put her bracelet down, watching as Coy’s eyes lit up. “C’mon, what happened!?”

“I just had the best idea ever.” Coy smiled in shock. Hanbon slapped his arm, whining and complaining more. “Okay, sorry.”

“ANSWER ME!”

“Okay, listen to this. You know Anthony Po?” Coy began. Hanbon nodded.

“That’s my boyfriend’s best friend. He’s basically my best friend. Apart from you of course!”

“You know how Anthony and Pat—“ Hanbon slapped his arm again. “Patterson. You know how him and Patterson hate each other and can’t be trusted in the same room? And how they fight once a week basically?”

“I’m listening.”

“What if I fake date Anthony Po?” Coy finished.

“That’s.. really a good idea. Good job, Coy. Now how the hell do you expect Anthony to agree to that? He probably has a bad impression since you literally dated his worst enemy.”

“Yeah, and also I cheered on Patterson during a fight and he glared at me. I think he wanted to punch me next.” Coy added.

“Well, Coy, I can try my best. Will is best friends with him, I bet if I can convince Will that it’s a good idea then he could convince Anthony.”

“Really? You’ll do that for me?” Coy’s eyes sparkled.

“For you.” Hanbon’s warm smile made Coy smile. He had a shitty breakup, but Hanbon makes everything better.
