~4 Years Has Passed and Yet We're the Same~

Summary:

France, like usual, was interested in watching humans. They were always so interesting with how they went about life. Though as his urges of curiosity consumed him he had a thought, why not BECOME human? This was perfect especially since no one cared for him anyways. Or so he thought.

Notes:

THIS WAS RUSHED BUT I HOPE YOU LIKE MY SLOP!!!! (WHEN I SAY RUSHSD I MEAN WRITTEN PUT OFF FOR A WHILE, FIX SOME WORDING, GET BORED, FORGET, AND THEN SAYING FUCK IT AND NEVER FORMATTING IT...)

(The resolved romantic tension is at the end).

Work Text:

Frances apartment had a balcony which happened to be just the right angle to view down at any pedestrian walking by. Its become a habit for France to stare and watch these people live their lives. Call him a people watcher but there is something about them living their life like there is unlimited time despite knowing that they all have limited time. Quite honestly the phrase 'Dream like you're gonna live forever, Live like there is no tomorrow'. France knew the others didn't care that much to at all, a lot of them live care free. The other nations of course. They were all immortal after all. But, France still couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to live as a human. With that mentality of knowing you're going to die one day but still living a life that is important to you. France knew he would never experience this, as long as his people thrived he would stay alive and so far it seemed he will be around for more centuries. So France staged a plan. A interesting one at best, but he needed some form of idea about the way the human world worked. So he made up a name not a good one at best but it worked, Francis Bonnefoy. France decided to also go the extra mile cutting his hair shorter to most male standards, dying his hair brown, shaving off his beard, and then used brown contacts to hide his blue eyes. He looked basic and boring, but fashion and clothes would fix that. Welp, it was time to live human. Meaning, he cut contact with all the other nations, moved apartments under his new name, and forged documents humans would need to work in the world they had. First day of starting life as a human was odd. Walking down the streets with nobody knowing who you were, to them France was just another person. This was oddly nice. Calming even. Not having to put up this mask of this perfect nation felt amazing. France did some basic things to get started in his new life, he bought food and more decorations for his apartment make it feel more like home and cozy than some place that you reside in. Of course France wasn't stupid and took all his money with him. So he had enough to last longer than this even should go. Looking around the new apartment furnished in a new way styled more warm than dull honestly felt amazing. France was actually starting to forget he's supposed to be some immortal nation and it's only been day one this is amazing. Going to bed felt even better with his head rushing with new possibilities and excitement for the day ahead. Day two was pretty nice he started exploring a bit more online, he managed to make some friends in the area through these groups on Facebook. Nice, friends and a apartment. He should get a job, but what job would he be good at... Cooking! France could be a chef! So he did so, using his forged documents stating he was 25 and had a culinary degree he managed to win a interview. It was tomorrow France was excited for this. France faked that he had quit his old job seeing as it wasn't for him and that he was going to get a new job to his friends. They believed him flawlessly, France had also already taken the measure to make it seem like he had a family but they had a tragic passing. So that way nobody would ever need to meet any relatives. Perfect. The next day, day three, was the day of the interview. It went smoothly. He ended up getting the job on the spot. France was loving this life, he couldn't go back now. Though he knew one day they would find out with his never aging appearance. What was supposed to be a week endeavor ended up turning into a month, to multiple months, to a couple years. It had been 4 years since he started this journey. And to say the least he has completely forgotten his nation life. He has completely forgotten all the nations. He figured a long time ago that they already moved on from his disappearance. Its not like anyone cared that much for him anyways. His shift had just ended and he decided to go to a bar nearby take the edge off, he had bills coming up soon anyways. Though he does have more than enough to pay them, he still has these normal human stressers. Entering the bar it was a pretty normal bar and because it was a week day not many people were there. Sitting down at the counter seat there was a man with his head shoved in his arm swirling the ice around in his drink. "You alright?" Francis asked. Curious if this man would like to open up, this could be a chance to connect to new people more. "Noo.." "Whats wrong? You could tell someone like me, maybe get it off your chest, it's relieving to do that" the other man seemed to hum in acknowledgement. "You're human, yeah?" Francis quirked an eyebrow a bit confused at the question "Yeah?" "Then you know all about loss, right?" Francis nodded before speaking again "I do, kind of odd to ask me that, what are you not human?" Francis joked nudging the man a bit. "No.." Francis paused before looking at the man "What do you mean?" "My name is England no last name. I am not human I am the personification of England itself, landborn." Francis paused for a moment something urged at the back of his mind that he knew this man but he couldn't tell what. "Well look at me my lucky day, meeting a nation in person! Now why don't you tell me what's bothering you? Might help" England hummed "Well, about 4 years ago a very dear friend of mine had gone missing. He isn't human he is a nation like me, so it would be impossible for him to have died. His people are still obviously alive and well still under the rule of France so its obvious he's still alive." Francis hummed now staring down at the ice swirling still in his drink. "Its a tough thing to have happen to you." Francis responded a bit struggling to respond. "You know I've never got your name. What is it?" Francis smiled before exaggerating it a bit "My name is Francis Bonnefoy!" It felt almost like autopilot or a habit with how exaggerated he did it, which was odd. Francis never did this before. Though it seemd to make England quirk up a bit staring at Francis now. England had not looked at Francis this whole conversation but with the way Francis seemed to act made England curious. Taking in how Francis looked it was obviously not France. Though the honey blonde roots made him curious enough to ask. "You dye your hair?" Francis looked at England smiling at the question. "Yeah I'm naturally a blonde" "Hm , reminds me of a obnoxious french frog I used to know" thats when it clicked and Francis accidentally let a response slip out "I am not a obnoxious french frog, angleterre..." Thats when Francis froze and England stared at him wide eyed as if he couldn't believe what he heard. "Ah- Look at the time! I think I will be seeing my way at out-" "Wait." England gripped Francis' wrist not letting the French man escape so easily. "France... Is that really you.? If it is you, France, please come back.." Francis stared at England before spewing "Why should I? I have taken so much joy and pleasure in living a normal life as a human, I have learned to enjoy the simple things. Plus, you guys never liked me from what I could tell. I was always such a pervert no one would miss me if I went missing. And I was right, nobody looked. Nobody put out a search." "I care France. I care. Do you have any idea how long I cried over you going missing. Do you have any idea how depressing everything got ever since you went away." "Why do you care!? I've done nothing but torment you an-" "BECAUSE I LOVE YOU FRANCE. IVE LOVED YOU FOR CENTURIES. IVE JUST BEEN TOO MUCH OF A WIMP TO SAY ANYTHING, BUT ONCE YOU WENT AWAY I REALIZED THAT I SHOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING SOONER. I THOUGHT YOU WERE GONE FOREVER, AND I REGRETTED EVERYTHING I NEVER DID OR SAID." England closed his eyes for a second noticing his face was wet and he could barely see. Removing his grip he rubbed his eyes dry before looking up at France he was shocked but also crying as hard as England was. France also looked conflicted now. Which was true France now had to decide his human life or one with the nations. His human life is nice yes and he has learned to be content with it but, his nation life brought such elegance and to say the least. He missed all of them. Taking a second to chew his lip and make a decision he let out a loud sigh. "You really are annoying you know that?" France asked England but as England was about to retaliate getting upset over Frances answer towards his heart felt confession, France kissed him holding England's head in his hands. England's eyes widened realizing what was happening but reprocated. England hoped this was a sign France would return. Pulling away for air France replied to England, "I'll come back, as long as I have you by my side" England's eyes widened "Please." That final word solidified Frances return. After reverting all his human documents to say he died of a heart attack with a full burial site. He prepared for the next world meeting, it had been 6 months since England and France got together and since France made the decision to return. Nobody but England knew. France wore his old uniform staring at it made him feel a bit nostalgic. His hair was also at its normal length the tips were brown while the rest was honey blonde now. His beard had also grown back within that time. He looked like his old self at this point. With a deep breath he met England outside in his car. They bickered like usual but they also held a lot more warm, comfortable conversations, in the end the drive there was very chatty but nice. England had divided a plan that he would go in there first France would wait outside and then after the meeting starts England would be hosting it so he would state that they have a guest coming in. To which France would burst in. This plan was to compensate for the lack of flair France has had for a while and to semi-help get back into the rhythm of things. Sure moving forward after the events of 4 years and 6 months is going to be weird but France already knew it was going to he an easy adjustment with England by his side.
