Summary
TC614 – designated “Clancy” – is an android, a humanoid robot built with a specific purpose: to hunt down rebels and eradicate deviant androids that threaten Dema’s pristine, tightly-controlled society.
Clancy’s directives soon guide him toward the Banditos, a rogue network of escapees and insurgents, led by a formidable man known to the Bishops as “the Torchbearer.” Haunted by a painful past in Dema, the Torchbearer now fights to free as many humans and androids as he can from the city’s control.
When Clancy accepts a mission to eliminate the Torchbearer, the two adversaries confront the boundaries of humanity and machine. Can something forged in circuits and algorithms feel as deeply as flesh and bone? And if a mind born from code learns to choose – can it ever be anything less than alive?
