Work Text:
Deku, a prodigy hero student who fought during the war and helped defeat the League of Villains. A hero known to the whole world for his achievements during the war. A new “Symbol of Peace.”
A 16 year old student at UA.
A student.
Who hasn’t had an actual break since starting high school.
A quirkless deku. Izuku Midoriya, now unable to participate in hero work since losing his quirk, going to school like a normal student. Like he never even had a quirk.
Midoriya sat at his desk, analyzing hero missions. He hoped to help with hero work in some way even if he couldn’t participate on scene. He could still help work behind the scenes and analyze hero work. He could still be a hero.
*DING*
“Huh?” Midoriya questioned. Izuku normally doesn’t get texts at this point of the day.
‘Hey Hero! Its been a while since we’ve talked I haven’t exactly had a good way to communicate. I finally got enough money to afford one of these bad boys.’ — Rody Soul
Rody? Midoriya hasn’t heard from him since… well since he left Otheon.
‘Hello Rody! By “bad boys” I’m assuming you mean a phone? It is good we can communicate now! I had missed talking to you :)’
Which was true. Every once in a while Midoriya’s thoughts would go back to that summer. The texts stilled for a moment before Midoriya saw the texting pop up which went away and came back a few times.
‘I missed talking to you too. Though I don’t really know if this counts as talking. But yeah I meant the phone. Lala and Roro were pretty excited when I told them I was getting one haha.’
Midoriya smiled at that. He remembered the conversations they had about his siblings. Hopefully they are both doing well.
‘How did you get my number Rody? Don’t get me wrong I’m glad you have it! But I forgot to give it to you when I left.’
Midoriya still felt bad about that. He had told Rody that he'd make sure to visit him and then never even gave Rody a way to keep contact.
‘Oh! Endeavor's Agency is here in Otheon. I remembered that Endeavor was Todoroki’s dad! So I asked to get into contact with Endeavor who then I got Todoroki’s contact from and then Todoroki gave me yours.’
Oh well that quite a bit of networking just to get his number.
‘That makes sense! Todoroki actually was giving me weird looks today, he was probably wondering if you contacted me.’ Izuku texted letting out a small sigh remembering Todoroki earlier that day. Everytime they were both in the same room he would just stare at Izuku. Midoriya started to think that he had done something to make Todoroki upset. Its good to know it was just because of this.
‘Yeah sorry it took so long to text, I planned to text earlier but I wasn’t sure it was a good idea. I MEAN I wasn’t sure if you would want me to text. It has been a while since we saw eachother and I wasn’t sure if it would make you uncomfortable. But now that I have I’m really glad I did.’
‘I’m glad you did too’ Izuku smiled. A true heartfelt smile, possibly the first one since the war had ended. Who knew that all he needed was for Rody to text him.
*RING, RING, RING*
The phone was going off. THE PHONE WAS GOING OFF. Rody was calling him?! Izuku answered the phone before the sound woke up any of his neighboring classmates.
“Rody?” Izuku whispered into the phone.
“Hey Hero,” Rody replied matching his tone to Izuku's. “Is it a bad time to call? Sorry if it was sudden I just thought it’d be easier to talk this way. Plus I wanted to hear your voice.”
Izuku blushed at that comment, “right now is fine! I just have to be quite since my classmates are sleeping.”
“They’re sleeping? Oh wait! Is there a timezone change? What time is it over there?”
“Its 12:30 right now, 12 when you first texted.”
“12! Sorry if I woke you up Hero. I didn’t realize there was that much of a change. Its only 5:30PM here.”
5:30? So in Otheon it's about dinner time right? Or is it still to early for that... “Are Lala and Roro by you then?”
“Ah they are watching television at the moment. So I got a few minutes free to talk to you before they swarm me for food.” Rody rolled his eyes which Izuku could pratically hear from their call. Izuku laughed before he moved from his desk to his bed. Laying onto his stomach.
“Did you want to talk about anything in particular?” Izuku asked kicking his legs back and forth.
“Nope! Like I said I just wanted to hear your voice. Its been too long since I’ve heard it—“ Rody stumbled on his words. “or saw you.”
Saw him? Did Rody actually miss him that much? He wouldn't mind seeing Rody again. Wait a minute couldn't they just— “You know we could facetime?”
“...Facetime? Oh. is that one of those fancy features?” Rody said messing with his phone loud enough that Midoriya could hear the tapping.
Izuku sighed before he smiled. “Just click accept.” The notification sent over to Rody.
“Yeah yeah I did give it a second to load.” Rody sarcastically replied.
The screen loaded in.
“Hey Rody.”
Rody paused for a second. It was Izuku. Rody could see Izuku. “Hey.”
Rody looked almost the same since Izuku last saw him except this time his signature headband was gone and his hair was let down. He looked—
“You got a staring problem or something?” Rody said although Pino seemed awfully flustered.
Rody was memorized. Izuku’s hair was a bit uneven and now more scars covered his body from the battles he faced. He looks older, he looks mature, he looks good.
“I can say the same for you Rody.” Izuku quipped back to Rody. Pino after Izuku said that jumped infront of the camera just to faint which made both of them laugh. They talked until 3AM which is when Izuku called it quits. He still had classes in the morning after all.
———————————————
Their routine kept a similar pace for the next few following weeks. They texted during the day and at night they called for a bit before Midoriya called it. They would just chat about their lives, what they missed, school, and even their pasts. Which was a difficult subject at first but once they started sharing they couldn’t stop.
Midoriya felt happy. He was happy.
“Midoriya?” Aizawa Sensei called Izuku right when he was walking out the doors.
“Stay behind for a minute.”
Ochaco and Iida were at Midoriya’s side. “I’ll save you a seat in the cafeteria Deku!” Ochaco told Midoriya.
“I can grab some food for you!” Iida chimed in.
Izuku smiled at them and they went there seperate ways. Izuku walked back into the classroom near Aizawa’s desk.
“Midoriya. Next week is spring break. Which of course means your classmates are going to their interships which they chose a few weeks ago. You, on the other hand, still haven’t picked somewhere.” Aizawa moved the paper Midoriya was supposed to fill out towards him.
“Can you tell me why it’s still blank?” Aizawa asked Midoriya.
Midoriya started rambling on about all the different internship options. “I wasn’t exactly sure where to go. Gran Torino fully retired and well no one else really stood out to me.” Which wasn't exactly true. Midoriya didn't know where to go, that part was true. He just didn't feel like interning just to watch other people fight.
“You could do Endeavors Agency again.” Aizawa chimed into his rambling.
Midoriya mumbled, “I thought about that but Todoroki and Kacchan aren’t going this time. Plus Endeavor and his agency are still overseas for that one mission.”
That one mission...
Aizawa and Midoriya kept discussing options and eventually Aizawa ended the conversation telling Midoriya he would have to have it filled out by Friday. Which was two days away. Two days to figure out where to intern.
————————————
Midoriya sat in his room. Sitting at his desk with his internship paper sitting right infront of him. He had been staring at it for the last 30 minutes.
*Ding!*
‘Hero you’re back from class now right? You wanna facetime?’ Rody texted Izuku.
‘Yes, I’m back from class! If you would like to facetime now we can.’ Izuku texted back.
And so they did. Rody called Midoriya and they talked for well over an hour.
“Thats when it hit me. I could just finish up my classes online that way I could work longer hours. Which actually has been quite nice! I can take care of Roro and Lala a lot easier now and packing their lunches doesn’t feel as rushed anymore.”
“Wait so all of your classes are online right now?”
“Yep! I even finished one of them already, only nine more credits to go till I’m done with school! I bet I can finish them all before the year ends and graduate a whole year early.” Rody bragged to Izuku showing off his hardwork. Totally not trying to impress him.
“Thats great Rody!" Izuku grinned as he spoke. This made Rody flustered for a moment before he changed the subject to avoid further embarrassment.
"What are you working on right now Hero?" Rody asked leaning in towards the phone.
Izuku paused. Right the internship! He hasn’t thought about it at all since he has been on call with Rody. Rody… Rody! Right Endeavor’s still in Otheon! “I’m actually supposed to internship for school. Mr. Aizawa said I had the option to go overseas. And well, Endeavors Agency is still in Otheon so I'm thinking—“
“You’re trying to come to Otheon?! Hero that’d be amazing! You did promise me a visit.”
“Mhmm! Sooo I think I’m gonna follow through and do Endeavors Agency. I know it’d be better as a surprise but—“
“I have work. Yeah, I’ll figure things out with them and clear some time during the day. Should be fine since you gave me a heads up!”
Izuku started filling out his paper. “Sounds good Rody! I’ll give Aizawa the paper tomorrow.”
“Oh so you actually decided? Amazing! I'll set up the spare room.”
Rody shortly after the Humarise incident got an inheritance for his fathers belongings. Since his father was a big reason they were able to defeat Humarise the goverment decided to forgive the Soul family for their involvement. They got access to all the money and property which belonged to his father. Rody couldn’t afford to keep up the old mansion so he ended up selling that land. This meant the Soul family had a lot more money than what they had before. And when I say a lot I mean it.
Rody and his siblings moved into an apartment complex. From what Midoriya heard the complex was well taken care of by their staff. Rody put the rest of the cash in savings to save up for Roro’s and Lala’s college funds. Which is why Rody still worked not wanting to take any money from their savings.
Rody and Izuku kept the conversation going talking about what time and dates to take off. They even discussed areas which they wanted to visit in Otheon.
Midoriya gave Aizawa the paper the next day. The next week passed by in a blink of an eye. It was now the day he was going to visit Otheon. Izuku woke up at 4:25AM which is the earliest he had woken up since before the war. He planned to pack everything and anything he could possibly need. No one else was going overseas for their internship. All of his classmates picked people who they’ve interned with before. Except Todoroki who was going with Tokoyami’s internship with Hawks.
Midoriya hadn’t told anyone where he was going. Mostly because no one asked. They probably figured he would intern with Aizawa or All Might. Even though All Might is retired and Aizawa already is interning with Shinsou, Izuku has a close relationship with both mentors. So its not suprising his classmates would assume he'd be staying at U.A. Izuku packed the last few things he needed before quietly heading out of the dorms.
“Midoriya?”
Todoroki was standing in the kitchen on Izuku’s way out. “Are you leaving for your internship already?”
“Yeah, I have to catch a plane so I have to leave today.” Most everyone else is leaving tomorrow.
“Oh, right you’re going to Otheon?” Todoroki asked slightly leaning his head sideways.
“Huh? How did you know Todoroki?”
“Endeavor thought I was going too." Todoroki said with a look of annoyance. "He got all ecstatic about it and then I had to break the news to him." Todoroki said smiling now staring at his cup.
Oh so thats why Endeavor accepted Midoriya’s request so quickly.
Todoroki looked back up to Izuku from where he was looking. “I’m surprised you’re interning with him again. Must be because of your accomplice.”
Accomplice? Oh! He means Rody. “Yeah, thanks for giving him my number Todoroki. It’s been nice talking to him again.”
“I can tell. You look happy Midoriya.” Todoroki gave Izuku a knowing smile, bumping their shoulders together.
Izuku reddened. Why was he getting nervous? “Well uhm yeah it feels nice talking to him.” Izuku rubbed his head avoiding eye contact with Todoroki.
Todoroki was still smiling. “I’m happy that you’re happy Midoriya. Enjoy your time in Otheon. Oh, don’t forget to send pictures of your time there.”
“Will do!" Izuku said walking towards the door. "Thanks again Todoroki.” He smiled before walking out the dormitory.
With that conversation done Izuku left. He got onto his flight which lasted about 20 hours. He practiced his English and studied the heroes who worked in Otheon. He wanted to make sure he was prepared for when he landed. 14 hours into the flight Izuku fell asleep. He woke up once the plane had started landing.
