Work Text:
Upon seeing the gaping hole in the side of the ship, most crewmates likely would only think of swearing and screaming. Green, however, only had a single thought before the air vortex began to pull them out.
I wonder if I would've hit the same asteroid if I was steering.
Before they could come up with something brighter, their feet slid across the floor, throwing them towards one of the crates. Orange extended a hand, trying to catch them, but in throwing themself forward, they only succeeded in falling right after Green.
The intern closed their eyes, and hoped that the impact wouldn't hurt, even with their head aiming straight for--
CRACK.
…
They were still breathing, at least, but… everything hurt. Everything was so sore, and the air was still rushing outside. Had anyone else heard the impact? Or were they just too busy trying to fix the problem to realize it?
Orange tried to sit up just a bit away, but from where Green lay, they could see a bone sticking out. Bones weren’t supposed to do that, probably. At least, they’d never seen a bone sticking out in a good situation. Or at all. The only bones they’d seen were from chickenmates and in museums, really, and worms didn’t HAVE bones, so what were they supposed to do about someone else’s bone being out?
…Not like they could move anyway. Even trying to raise a hand wasn’t working. They tried speaking, but that didn't work either.
All they could do was watch as a worm-like thing approached, crawling across the floor faster than the worms back home. Maybe it had gotten some good food, and that was why it was so big! They would have to figure out what kind of food--
Why was it getting so close?
Time felt like it was going impossibly slowly. The creature moved out of view, above their head. Green almost felt bad for losing sight of the little guy. Maybe it was just scared of all the motion around, or something? The poor thing probably wasn’t used to space either, and taking off had been a bit strange, so…
…
There was something else in their head.
Squirming, wriggling, worming its way into their body. They couldn’t cry out for help, or try to itch, or anything. Their body moved, but they weren’t moving. Something was happening to them. Something they couldn’t control.
Wait, what are you doing, me? Stop moving like that-- Stop, I don’t want to get launched into space! My parents-- my town-- I can’t let them down! I need to hold on!
People were talking, yelling at Orange, and something was happening. Green barely moved, watching, studying the scene.
Hm. Two and nine. The most dangerous… The captain would be the leader, but would they truly lead? The doctor knows too much before the start. The other should destabilize leadership. I should focus on the problems… And choosing the first. The first is important. Someone unimportant enough that they can brush it off.
A voice in their head was talking, but it wasn’t theirs-- it sounded nothing like them. Though, really, it didn’t sound like anything. It was just a voice in their head, like a song played directly into their skull.
They… they didn’t like it. The voice felt cold, and with how their body was looking at the others, there was something super wrong.
I… I should tell Captain Red! Or-- or Doctor Blue! They’d know what to do. I just need to go talk to one of them. Either one would probably be able to help.
Yet even though their body was leaving the room, they couldn’t force their hand to move. Green couldn’t even open their mouth. They couldn’t-- they couldn’t do anything, why wasn’t their body working?!
I need to talk to Blue or Red. I need to talk to Blue or Red. I need to talk to Blue or Red. I need to talk to--
Quiet. I need to think.
Blue or Red, Blue or Red, Blue or Red--
And then, as they stopped in the hallway, they finally managed to move their hand, reaching out for someone beside them. Anyone. Anyone at all.
“Oh, hey, Green. What, did you want some of my expertise?” White asked.
…Green wasn’t entirely sure what happened next.
All they knew was that from that point on, they weren’t in their body anymore. It was something else altogether.
There was a monster on the Skeld, and Green couldn’t do anything about it.
