They’re ten, and a group of boys corner Ryland during recess. He takes every insult they throw at him, shoulders hunched and head bowed, until Colt elbows his way between them. Colt, who shouts back with spitting insults and swinging fists. Colt, who ends up in the principal’s office much more after that.
