Chapter Text
Jack was barking his usual order to the hunters. They all had sticks in hand and were talking among themselves at times. "We need to be quicker when catching the pig! We were too slow last time!" Jack shouted. Roger stood nearby Maurice, Maurice glanced at Roger, then looked at the rocks below his feet. Once Jack was done his speech, Roger walked up to jack. "Jack, I think we should talk privately." Rogers hoarse voice made jack curious of what Roger wanted to talk about. Jack nods and let Roger lead the way.
Roger stopped at a cliff, the blazing sun heating up the rocks that they were used to be walking on barefoot. Jacks matted ginger hair got into his face which he let be. "The pig was slow Jack, if we couldn't get that slow thing, we have to train to be faster." Roger admitted. Jack nodded in agreement. Suddenly, Jack felt a hand on his back and push him forward. Roger pushed Jack down the cliff. As Jack was falling he tried to call out something but he couldn't due to the state of shock he was in. When he hit the ground below the cliff with a thud, he saw the black haired boys grim face smiling at him. Roger pushed a boulder off the cliff that landed on Jack. Roger was satisfied.
Maurice was crouched in a bush and he saw everything. He didn't hear the conversations, but he saw it all. Maurice started breathing quickly, his heart beating. Rogers spear was tapping against the ground when Roger was walking. Once there were no sound of footsteps, Maurice peeked his head out of the foliage. There was nobody close so Maurice made his way out of the bush. he didn't dare say a word to anyone. Maurice was scared of Roger and his violent tendencies. He saw Roger kill piggy. He knew Roger was violent but didn't expect him to do anything real.
Roger stepped up to where Jack stood during his last speech and announced to the hunters to gather around and be quiet. "Jack has fallen off a cliff. I suspect he wasn't paying attention to his surroundings and fell and died from impact." Rogers face stayed calm. Maurice looked around to see if anyone thought if the boy who was speaking right now was wrong. Nobody was confused, just a blank look on their painted faces. "So, in that case, as co-chief I shall be Chief and lead you hunters. And with that we should hunt Ralph. The rest of his group is gone and this is what Jack would've wanted." Roger commanded. The hunters gathered their spears that were on the ground and readied up.
Roger shouted and made his way to where Samneric were.. Samneric were on watch for Ralph. "Hold up, Roger-" "It's Chief now." Roger smacked Eric in the back of head making him stumble a few feet. Sam glared at Roger and helped Eric. "Chief, we should wait for nightfall to hunt Ralph.." Sam suggested. "I suppose that will be better, Ralph might sleep at night so a better chance to get him if he's not moving around." Roger agreed.
Roger went to camp and shouted over all the talking voices of the hunters. "We will hunt for Ralph at night. It's better if he's not moving." All the hunters looked and nodded and went back to talking. Maurice stood in the crowd of kids and stared at Roger but Roger didn't seem to notices Maurice gaze locked onto him.
“Samneric!” A hushed voice came from the bushes near the rocks. It was Ralph. The fair haired boy was trying to get their attention. “Guys!” He whispered loudly. Finally, they both turned and saw Ralph. “Ralph!” The twins said at the same time. “You shouldn’t be here, jacks dead and Roger’s planning to hunt you at night!” The twins tried to swat Ralph away. “What?” Ralph was in disbelief. Ralph ran away and into the jungle and hid for the day.
