Chapter Text
After Finn had managed to destroy the last weapon and the rest of the team had killed off the two ogromen. Sherry and Jake got on their carried to go bring Jake’s blood to make a vaccine for the c-virus. Chris doesn’t like the idea of just letting two most valuable people to maybe ever walk on earth just go in the same plane at the same time without any of them. He brings this issue up.
Chris glances at Piers, “Shouldn’t one of us be on that plane?”
Piers looks up from patching his wounds, “There’s some of Sherry’s allies in there. Trust them.”
Chris shakes his head, “I’m not trusting the government’s men, no matter what she tells me.”
A small explosion shakes the carrier. Chris rushes to the window just to see a tyrant about 8 feet tall on the door of the carrier that Jake and Sherry are in. What the fuck- The tyrant goes inside the carrier blocking the view. They can hear gunshots and grunting metal. Fire rises through the broken cockpit window. They need to do something. Chris opens his radio and basically yells into it. “Get them in another carrier before that one crashes! And gun down that son of a bitch!”.
Sherry and Jake jump from the carrier into the carrier next to them. Just as Jake jumps out it explodes. Chris sees the goddamn tyrant jump out of the smoldering and falling remains of the carrier to the feet of the chopper. The tyrant was hanging off the chopper by its left hand.
Then gun fire, maybe turrets. The carriers have turrets. Maybe if Jake and Sherry would hit the tyrant it wouldn’t kill them. He sees the chopper starting to spin down and the tyrant jumps in the carrier that Jake and Sherry are in. They hear more gunfire and the carrier started to tilt. Soon the carrier catches on fire.
The tyrant falls out of the carrier.. Then he sees Sherry and Jake hanging off the edge.
Oh shit- there’s no way a chopper or a carrier could catch them. They see them dropping down with a single shitty parachute. The carrier explodes blocking his view just long enough to lose the sight of the two. Great. This was turning out great. Perfect.
He turns to look at Piers, who’s already communicating with the other carriage still airborne. Finn sitting next to him stares outside, “Do you- do you think they are dead?”
Chris looks at the smoldering remains of the carrier far down, barely visible through smoke and falling snow, “Only one way to find out”. He turns to Pierce, “We are landing”.
They sit in silence as the carrier lands on a clearing about five hundred yards from the crash site. Finn’s leg is bouncing, but he chooses not to comment on it. As the door opens they walk out into the cold winter air. Wind blows and snow falls from the sky. Ben, Carl and Andy come out from the other carrier. Chris walks to the team signaling them to come near him so they will be able to hear him again. “Alright, firstly we get to the crash site. There we split up if necessary to cover more ground.”
The alpha team starts to walk towards the site of the crash, it was not hard to see since the burning carrier is easy to spot against the white background. Chris takes the lead.
As they walk there Finn’s fidgeting with his collar. Piers notices and slows down to walk next to him. “Hey, there’s nothing to worry about. They had a parachute, the worst that could have happened to them is just a broken leg or bruised rib”, Finn looks at Piers as he spoke to him, before quickly looking down.
“I know they are like superhumans or something, but it doesn’t make me less worried”. Piers looks at Finn with a slight smile, “That’s not bad. Being worried isn’t bad.” Finn's eyes meet Piers’. Piers nods at him as they approach the plane crash.
Chris lifts his hand up, a sign to stop moving. Then he opens his mouth and asks out loud, “Anyone here?! Sherry? Jake?”. There’s no answer. They walk around the crash site looking for them.
Chris finds the parachute. He takes a few steps closer to go check it out. It has a big hole…no, not a hole, a scratch. Chris looks around and spots some blood. It goes from the parachute before ending in a puddle, like someone crash landed and rolled around for a bit. Next to the puddle is a piece of the plane’s wall with blood on it. Finn appears next to Chris, “You think they survived?”
“They’ve had to. Otherwise their bodies would be here.” Chris answers. He thinks for a moment. What should he do…Splitting up in this weather? Dangerous. But in a group it wouldn’t be efficient if the pair is bleeding out somewhere. Chris takes a deep breath and turns back to his team. “Alright, we split up in two teams ...Ben, you take the lead and go with Andy and Carl”. Ben looks at Chris “Yes, captain!”.
“Piers and Finn with me. You three go downhill. If the blizzard gets too bad, come back here. We don’t want anyone dying because of the cold. We go uphill and if anything happens, contact us immediately, understood?”
A chorus of “Yes, captain”, rings out. Chris grips his gun harder, “Alright, let’s move”.
Chris, Piers and Finn start walking in the opposite direction from Ben, Carl and Andy. As they walk Piers looks at Chris, “why didn’t you just send me with Andy and Carl?”. Chris didn’t even look at Piers, “Because I need you with me here. Finn is a rookie and specialised in explosions not in fighting”. They walk in silence for a while, but it was starting to get really cold and really dark.
Piers is scanning the ground when he notices something “Do you see that?” Chris looks down and sees the snowmobile path…
”We will follow it for a bit, but if this is a dead end then we are going back before it gets too cold, understood?”. Finn nods, following behind Chris and Piers. “Piers, contact the other group and tell them to get back to the carriers”. Piers nods and calls the other team.
Soon a cabin appeared in the distance. There’s lights inside, maybe a fire? Chris lifts his hand up to stop Finn and Piers from walking any closer. Finn almost bumps into Piers. “Alright, either Jake and Sherry are in there or a bunch of J’avos. We burst in through the front door. Let's go”. They start walking towards the cabin. Chris grips his gun tighter, lifted ready to fire. Piers and Finn come close behind with their guns raised.
Chris and Piers stand in front of the door. They nod at each other before kicking it open only to see…..Nobody? That was weird. Chris walked in first. As Piers and Finn step in, the former closes the door. From behind the door someone hits Finn and grabs him into a chokehold. Piers and Chris quickly turn their guns raised.
It was…Jake. Piers looks at Jake “oh it’s…..you”. Jake drops Finn from the chokehold and looks at the two of them, “Chris… Piers”. Chris looks around and sees Sherry standing near the couch where she had probably been hiding. Chris looks between them. Jake looks…fine, but Sherry's coat has a hole in the front and there’s dried blood all over the jacket, “What the hell happened to you?”
Finn stands up but says nothing, rubbing his throat.
Jake looks at them and shrugs before crossing his arms. “A long story, but we are fine”.
Piers looks at Jake with skepticism “Fine? You just fought one hell of a bitch.”
The wall behind Sherry blows up into a thousand pieces. Jake pulls her down. Chris pulls Finn against the wall. A bunch of J’avos. They could definitely beat them in a fight.. And then the firing begins..
The J’avos start shooting and Chris, Piers, Sherry and Jake shoot back. The J’avos quickly died. The mountain made this terrible growling vibration. Chris and Piers looks at each other, Chris spoke before Piers could even start: “Avalance, we gotta go! Now, move!”. The five ran outside. “They couldn’t keep it down?!” Jake mutters.
The blizzard is calming down but the sky is still pouring snow. There’s 3 snowmobiles. Jake hops on one of them, signaling Sherry to get on. She didn’t need to be told twice. Piers hops on to the other one and yanks Finn behind him. He’s holding Piers like his life depends on it. Well it does. Chris takes the last snowmobile.
Piers drives first. It’s hard to see as snow is falling from behind and above them. The terrain shakes violently. The ground and ice crack, forming blocks and spikes to fall.
In front of Piers' snowmobile a big ice spike about the size of a lighting rod falls from the sky. Piers hits the brakes hard which makes both him and Finn fall from the snowmobile.
As Chris drives past them, he grabs Piers by the arm who grips his back. Chris pulls Piers to his snowmobile.
Sherry and Jake drive past Finn. The former grabs Finn by his backpack. The boy is dragged behind the snowmobile for a moment before Sherry can actually pull him up. They drive behind Piers and Chris. Chris and Piers drive by a path to jump up and get above an ice spike. Piers almost falls off but manages to stay on. Jake turns towards the hill but he quickly realizes he wouldn’t be able to make it out the same way as Chris and Piers.
The ground shakes, splitting the ground in front of them… He could probably jump over that. Jake takes the change and hits the gas. As the snowmobile’s in the air he yells out to Sherry and Finn: “Jump!”
The snowmobile drops into the ravine. Jake lands on his feet on the other side. He looks around, Sherry has gotten over the ravine, but hasn’t landed on her feet. Jake didn’t see Finn for a moment. Where the hell is the rookie? He looks around, until he spots Finn on the edge of the ravine, barely holding on. Jake rushes to him and pulls him up. As he pulls him up he sees even more snow pouring down, “We gotta keep moving”.
As soon as Finn’s legs hit the ground Jake starts running, still holding the former’s wrist.
Sherry follows close behind them. There’s no chance they could outrun the avalanche. Jake spots a cave on the mountain side. He motions at it to Sherry as they run.
The three enter the cave just before being crushed by the snow. Ice, snow and rocks block the exit. Jake leans against the wall and watches as Finn fiddles with his comms. Finn takes his comms and tries contacting the others. He gets the connection after trying a few times, “Chris, Piers? It's Finn. We are in a cave and the opening is blocked”.
Piers and Chris had gotten a safe distance away and were waiting for the three to show up. The comms crackle to life. It’s definitely Finn, but all Piers and Chris can make out is “c-ss p.. it….f-n….in a c-e…th-.-st’s bl–ed”. Chris and Piers look at each other before Chris answers, “Finn? What’s happening? We can’t hear you”. The connection ends before Finn could hear Chris.
Chris tried again, “Finn? Finn?!”. There’s no answer. Piers grabs Chris’ arm, “Let’s go. We need to get moving”.
Chris looks from Piers to where they had come from, “We can’t leave them”.
Piers takes a deep breath, “That’s a death wish. We should get back to the carriers to regroup. We can't stay out here for long”.
Chris stares at the snow falling from the mountain. He knows Piers was right, but they can’t just leave them alone to survive in the avalanche. They had to survive….right? The comms couldn’t work if Finn is under snow. Piers hops onto the snowmobile. “Come on, Captain. We need to go. Staying here is like begging to die”. Piers pulls Chris.
He takes a deep breath. He knows he couldn’t risk Piers' life for a possibility.
