Work Text:
It was supposed to be an easy day. Lucifer just got back from the Human Realms from the Witches Conference, after hours long converse. They finally got the Human Realm agreement to go forwards with the exchange program. However that was unfortunately the easiest part. Making the Celestial Realm to agree with this was going to be unbelievably difficult. Just thinking about it gives Lucifer a migraine. All he had to do now was go to his early meeting with Diavolo, discuss the agreement and other minor details. Then he’s finally allowed to go home. He should be done in an hour.
Maybe Barbatos not being present to greet Lucifer should have been a sign, however he was too much in his own thoughts to take note of this. He knocked on the door, “Lord Diavolo, I’m present. May I come in?”
He heard shuffling before an incoherent noise. His brows furrowed. “Lord Diavolo, I'm coming in.” He stated, turning the knob to open the door. The stench of booze ached out, making Lucifer wrinkled his nose. He stared a moment before stepping in.
“Mammon broke up with me.”
That was the first thing that Lucifer heard when he went to greet Diavolo for their early morning meeting. Lucifer furrowed his brows and got a good look at the demon in-front of him.
Diavolo looked a little worse for wear. His hair was unkempt, his eyes puffy evidence towards tears that had spilled, tie loosen, and creases in his dress shirt that Lucifer knew Barbatos wouldn’t stand for. He was holding his head in his hand, probably nursing a hangover evident from the faint Demonus smell on his breath.
Cautiously, Lucifer walked towards Diavolo. He sighed, setting down his paperwork on his desk. He pried the near empty Demonus bottle from Diavolo’s hand and placed it at the side.
When Diavolo and Mammon first came out to tell the Brothers that they were dating, a shock that definitely took some years off his life at the time but now looking back made sense, Lucifer didn’t expect these… exchanges.
In all regards, Diavolo and Mammon were a good couple. It was evident that both demons cared for each other deeply. Diavolo was seemingly always just an inch away from Mammon, always having his hand wrapped around Mammon’s waist or hand. Which truthfully was borderline possessive, but Mammon seemingly didn’t notice that fact. To be fair, Mammon was always a bit preoccupied when Diavolo did that. He was always seemingly stuttering around the man, embarrassed at the slightest physical affection shown.
Despite both caring for each other deeply, they got into arguments. From what Lucifer could tell, the majority of the arguments are silly little feuds, underlining a major issue in their relationship that one party refuses to believe in.
Diavolo has an issue sharing Mammon with others, to put it simply. Which causes issues due to the fact Mammon takes that into believing that Diavolo doesn’t trust him, causing conflict in their very happy relationship.
It doesn’t help that Diavolo won’t admit to that fact and even worse refuse to change, making Mammon even more upset.
Lucifer should know how much it makes Mammon upset as often not, it was him who comforts him after every supposed break up. There were times where Mammon got so genuinely upset that Lucifer wished he didn’t swear his loyalty to Diavolo.
Of course, Lucifer doesn’t mean that… However.
He sighed.
As much as Lucifer didn’t want to admit it, he had a soft spot for his first younger brother, and genuinely didn’t want to see the younger one upset.
However Diavolo’s refusal often devolves into arguments and sometimes more often than not ends up with break ups. They eventually get back together, but still. Lucifer didn’t like seeing his brother so upset.
He had to swallow his words down before he said something Lucifer would regret. Lucifer sighed again. “This is the thirty-fourth time this century,” Lucifer managed to state. Diavolo drooped, pure anguish appearing on his face.
“What happened?” Lucifer asked.
Diavolo looked away. He looked ashamed. “It’s childish and unpleasant. I’d rather not converse about it.” He whispered, his voice a little raspy.
Lucifer sighed. He glanced and his frown deepened. If Diavolo was this much of a mess, how bad was Mammon? That thought made his head ache so he pushed it away to focus on the situation in hand. He took out his pocket watch and furrowed his brows.
“Why isn’t Barbatos present?”
Diavolo gave an ashamed pitiful smile. “I… dismissed him for the day.” He couldn’t even have the decency to look Lucifer in the eye when he admitted it.
“Ah.”
”Yep…” Diavolo said exasperated, slumping to place his head on the table. “Lucifer, can you get me another bottle?” Diavolo gestured to the cabinet behind him.
Lucifer glanced down at the sheets that desperately needed signing, and events that needed to be properly outlined and planned. Then he looked at Diavolo. Lucifer sighed again, he already felt a migraine settling in. Lucifer knew that they wouldn’t be able to do any work at the state that Diavolo was in, so he sighed and begrudgingly walked towards the cabinet and pulled out another bottle of Demonus and two cups. Diavolo got up, taking the corkscrew with him, from his desk and moved to the coach. Miraculously he didn’t fall.
Lucifer followed suit, placing a cup in front of Diavolo before doing the same for himself. Diavolo slid the corkscrew to Lucifer. He followed suit as he precisely uncorked the bottle, allowing the cork to fall somewhere in the room. He poured Diavolo a glass, and then himself.
Diavolo downed it in a second.
Lucifer's frown deepened. This day was going to be a long one.
He hoped Mammon would be alright.
Mammon burst through the House of Lamentation. Before Leviathan could even mention the fact his special-limited edition Ruri-chan figure was gone, Mammon stormed away. Leviathan stood and stared before breaking out of his trance. He admittedly was a bit flustered about that. Usually Mammon would at least acknowledge him before storming off, he never does that unless… Leviathan froze. His mouth gaped.
Leviathan flinched, he heard a door slam shut.“Awe! Not again!” He said as he pulled out his D.D.D.

Leviathan
ARGH!!!
Just meet me at Mammon’s room!
Leviathan furrowed his brows. He was certain he heard a sob just about now. He inched himself closer until his ear was touching the door.
“Levi,” said someone touching his shoulder. Leviathan flinched, stepping back before stumbling on his feet and falling.
“Fuck.” He groaned, wincing at the pain of his tush, the area that covered the brunt of the tumble. He looked up and scowled. “Satan, don't scare me like that!”
There was Satan, with Asmodeus in tow. He shrugged, “you should be more aware of your surroundings.”
“Why you-?!” Levi began, jumping up from his fall.
Satan raised an eyebrow, “Why what?!”
“Ek!” Leviathan said, all of his bravado inflating. Satan's gaze hardens, making Leviathan slump even more. “Nothing, just where’s the others?”
“Oh! Beel told me that he’s going to get a snack first before getting here and you know wherever Beel goes, Belphie follows!.” Asmodeus stated, he glanced at Mammon’s shut door. “Well Levi, have you checked in with Mammon yet?”
He cringed at that question, biting his lips before shaking his head.
“Well why not?” Asmodeus asked.
Leviathan stiffened. “You guys didn’t hear him, he’s crying!” Levi whispered loudly. “I’m not stupid enough to bother him when he's upset over Lord Diavolo?! You check up on him!”
Asmodeus cringed. “Devildom no! The last time he chipped my nail!” Asmodeus announced as he profusely shook his head.
“You see my point!”
Satan sighed. “Yes, but,” he paused and glanced to look at Leviathan, “you’re older.”
Leviathan flushed. “I- well!” He hesitated. “Why isn’t Lucifer here?! Isn’t he the usual one to comfort Mammon?!”
Satan narrowed his eyes. “Levi you should know this, Lucifer is in the Human Real--” Satan stopped and turned his head, frowning. “Belphie is close.”
There the twins emerged from the stairs, Beelzebub holding a chip bag in hand. They slowly eventually joined the group. Belphagor glanced at the group, “did anyone check up on Mammon yet?” He asked, rubbing his eyes, yawning.
Leviathan, Satan, and Asmodeus, all three of them glanced at each other before shaking their heads.
“Eh? Why not?”
“I-- well, we don’t want to mess with an angry, sad Mammon.” Leviathan said. “Specifically we don’t want to deal with a Mammon who is angry and sad about Lord Diavolo.” Asmodeus added.
Belphagor stared unimpressed. He pushed away the others from the door, before knocking causing Asmodeus and Leviathan to flinch. “Mammon!” Belphagor announced, “I’m coming in!”
As soon as Belphagor opened the door, he got blasted with the pure anguish atmosphere that had been building up, making the others shutter. Belphagor winced, before closing the door quickly, turning to face the rest. “Okay…” he began, “so Levi was right.”
Leviathan shrank, and groaned.
Beelzebub licked his fingers clean before crumbling it and shoving the bag into his pocket. “Why don’t we just let Lucifer handle this?”
“He’s out.” Asmodeus and Leviathan both mumbled.
Beelzebub frowned, “ah.” A worried look creeped up on his face.
They all sat in silence for a moment before Asmodeus intervened. He strived forward with a crooked smile. “Okay!” All the brothers' attention turned towards Asmodeus. “If anyone knows about break ups, its me~”
Leviathan scoffed. “Eh? Aren’t you the one who usually breaks up with someone?”
The brothers side eyed Asmodeus. He awkwardly cleared his throat. “That’s irrelevant! But to be fair I know the concepts of how to comfort someone during a break up.” He glanced up with a smirk, “unless you want our dear brother to be upset until our dear eldest brother strives forward to sweep him off his misery, and who knows when Lucifer will return?”
No one really responded to that. Satan scoffed and sighed,“just tell us what to do.”
Asmodeus clapped, “okay right! Everyone after I say what your task is, bring everything to the living room! Understood?” Everyone nodded.
Asmodues brightened, puffing out his chest pointing at Belaphor. “Belphie get the weighted blankets and an unreasonable amount of pillows.” Belphagor nodded, heading to the Twins room. Asmodeus turned to Leviathan, “Levi go get the corniest movies you can find, try not to get any romance.” Leviathan nodded before rushing to his room. “Beel get a stupid amount of ice cream--” before he could finish Beelzebub ran off to the kitchen.
Asmodeus and Satan glanced at each other. “I’m going to make sure that Beel doesn’t eat everything.” Satan said, he glanced at Asmodeus. “What were you going to say before Beel ran off?”
“I was going to tell him to meet me here after he brings everything to the living room, so he can help me drag Mammon out,” Asmodeus admitted.
“Hm?”
“Well he’s the only one physically strong enough to pick up Mammon, and Mammon should be aware enough that he doesn’t hurt Beel seriously.” Asmodeus shrugged.
Satan thought for a moment, “alright I’ll tell him that.” He nodded before heading to the kitchen.
Asmodeus himself went to his room to take out his nail polish and remover, remembering that he just gave them a couple matching sets. He also made sure to gather a lot of soft tissue, and facemask, before placing all his material in a box.
Beelzebub was awkwardly outside Mammon’s room before he noticed Asmodeus. The demon brightened considerably as he walked over to Beelzebub. Asmodeus set his box down on the floor, before glancing over to Beelzebub.
“Okay Beel, here’s the plan.” Asmodeus began, “in the count of three, you run in there and tackle Mammon to carry him to the living room. The main objective for you is to get Mammon under the weighted blankets, once he’s there he should gain control enough to be coherent. Understood?” Beelzebub nodded. “I’ll be right beside you! I’m going to attempt to charm Mammon to pacify him until then.”
Beelzebub bit his lips and nodded again. Asmodeus smiled, “you got this!” Both turned their attention to the door. Asmodeus started the countdown, after the word “one” slipped out of his mouth, they began to sprint. Asmodeus was the one to open the door allowing Beelzebub to zoom in. He heard Mammon growling and things falling on the floor, the skuffle persisted for a while until Beelzebub came out a bit bruised but victorious, with Mammon thrown on his back. As soon as Asmodeus saw the white hair demon, he focused his energy on Mammon. The charm worked. With the box in hand, Asmodeus and Beelzebub began to walk towards the living room.
However it was short- lived as not even halfway there, Asmodeus flinched. Mammon was breaking his charm, unsurprisingly but still! Beelzebub, noticing this shift, quickened his pace. They ran to the living room, almost ramming onto the coach. Carefully, Beelzebub settled Mammon on the center of the coach before wrapping him in the blankets.
As soon as that was achieved, Asmodeus collapsed onto the floor, panting as he wiped the sweat off his head in disgust.
“Are you alright?” He heard Satan ask. Asmodeus shifted his focus upward and saw a crowd form around where Beelzebub covered Mammon in weighted blankets.
There was a beat of silence before a choked sob came out. The brothers glanced at each other before frowning. Satan cautiously sat next to him, “sorry dumb question.”
Beelzebub glanced at the ice cream, before wiping his mouth from his drool and handing it to Mammon along with a spoon. They heard sniffles as Mammon took the tub and spoon. He opened the lid and scooped an unreasonable amount of it into his mouth. “Not yer fault.” Mammon eventually responded. He spooned another into his mouth.
Mammon seemingly calm enough, the others took a seat on either side of Mammon on the coach. “What did he do?” Belphegor asked. The brothers stared at Belphegor. “What? He obviously did something.”
Mammon bit his lips.
Belphegor narrowed his eyes. “See! Mammon isn’t immediately defending him, so he obviously did something wrong!” He pointed out.
Mammon sighed, before rolling his eyes. “I don’t always jump to defend him…” he mumbled.
Leviathan cackled at that, Mammon glared at him. His laugh died down immediately not before a few awkward laughs escaped him, before concluding with a cough. Belphagor sighed, “you’re avoiding the question,” he replied.
Mammon stared into the distance, blankly. He spooned another spoonful in his mouth. “We ran into disagreements about my career in Devil Style.”
“Ah.” All the brothers said deadpan. Everything clicked.
Mammon gave a quizzical look at all of them. He put his spoon down. “Ah?” He mimicked. “What does that even mean???” He asked incredulously, waving his hand all around.
The brothers all exchanged looks before landing onto Satan. Satan glared at the others while they all looked away, maybe out of shame or awareness of their own cowardness. He sighed competently, massaging his own temple. “Well Lord Diavolo has a history of disapproving of your job ventures.” He stated simply.
Mammon furrowed his brow, “okay but he never made such an outrage over it!” Mammon announced, slamming his spoon and tub down. “Sure Dia made some comments about my previous jobs in the past but if anything they were out of concern but for some reason now-!” Mammon sighed. “He wasn’t like this before,” Mammon concluded in a meek tone.
All the brothers knew where Diavolo’s disapproval stemmed from. It was not out of concern but the want of Mammon to be somewhat codependent on him, like he is emotionally. Of course, Mammon isn’t aware of that.
“Maybe~,” Asmodeus chimed in, turning all the attention to him, "it’s because your newest endeavor requires you to be…intimate.” Mammon rolled his eyes. “And we know how possessive Lord Diavolo gets over you!” All the brothers nodded in agreement to the frustration of Mammon.
“Argh! Shaddup!” He screamed, holding onto his blankets even tighter than before. There was silence before Mammon broke it. “I just don’t understand why he’s like this, ever since I got this job I didn’t have to even ask him for grimm anymore,” Mammon admitted. “I thought it would be better this way-- that I wouldn’t be running his reputation.” He bit his lips before looking away. “I wanna handle my own bearings, so I don’t drag him down ya.” He admitted.
The brothers frown, glancing at each other. Mammon glared at his brothers, “Stop doin that!”
All the brothers knew that the couple was at a stalemate. Mammon didn’t want to burden Diavolo with all his money problems, making him search for odd jobs so he doesn’t have to rely on him financially. While Diavolo wanted Mammon to lean on him in trouble, like he does with Lucifer. Truthfully, Satan believes that the Prince was rather zealous over the two oldest relationships, but he’s too prideful to admit that. Plus it didn’t help with the fact that Diavolo would have to share Mammon with Devildom as a whole, as everyone couldn’t help talk about the Avatar of Greed newest appearance. It made sense that their disagreements boiled to a point where it exploded.
Asmodeus sighed, breaking the silence. He got a cotton pad and smothered it in nail polish remover. “Give me your nails, Mammon.” Mammon followed suit obediently. “What a waste of time, and to think this set came actually pretty cute.” Asmodeus pouted, as he began removing the nail polish off of Mammon’s hand.
The tension seemed to evaporate. Leviathan glanced around before landing on his DVDs. “I’m gonna put one on.” He murmured, as he looked through his pile.
Belephor signed as he snuggled closer to Mammon, “don’t move.” Mammon chuckled at that and eased into the touch. Beelzebub sat next to his twin, eating the remaining ice cream.
Leviathan finally chose a movie, popping it in before scrambling to the coach. Satan sat at the other side of Mammon, while Leviathan sat beside him. Leviathan ended up choosing a comedy movie that they sped through. After, no one particularly felt like cooking, so they got food delivered to them. It was ramen, Mammon’s favorite. Dinner was quiet, as conversation flew around Mammon as he absently listened to the surrounding conversations. Mammon picked around his noodles before handing the rest to Beelzebub. He excused himself to go to his own room, not noticing the six pairs of eyes trained upon him and the whispering emerging as he left.
He went to his room, collapsing on his bed. Immediately as he laid down, he paused, glancing around. Something smelt like Diavolo. Looking around on his bed, he found one of Diavolo’s coats. It stenched of his scent, Mammon frowned as he glared at the jacket before turning away. His heart couldn’t bear the sight of it yet the scent still brought so much comfort to him Mammon couldn’t bear throwing it across the room. So for the whole night, he laid there. Drowning of the memory of Diavolo before sleep eventually made him succumb.
It was eleven in the morning when Mammon woke up. He woke up absolutely miserable, and knowing he missed breakfast made him even more miserable. He laid there before reaching out for his D.D.D, finally turning it out. He immediately regretted that course of action. Instantly he got bombarded with text messages from Diavolo, all ranging from desperation to anger to pure and unconditional sadness. He got a message from Barbatos, wishing him well in whatever course of action Mammon took going further. And finally a message from Lucifer informing him he’ll be home late.
Mammon groaned, throwing his D.D.D back down onto his mattress. He shifted and immediately spotted Diavolo’s coat. Out of weakness, because despite everything Mammon did indeed care for Diavolo a lot, reached out for it. He wrapped it in his hand and pulled it towards him. There were still remnants of his cologne that truthfully made Mammon tear up.
Someone knocked on the door.
Mammon cringed before quickly shoving the coat underneath his blanket. He stumbled out of his bed and stumbled towards the door, opening it quickly. “Whatdya want!?” He demanded glaring at a very nervous Leviathan.
Instantly Mammon cringed. “Sorry.” He said sheepishly.
Mammon stared at Levithian, expecting him to say anything. Except he didn’t. Instead he seemed suddenly very interested at the wall, at anything but Mammon. “Levi?” Mammon deadpanned.
“Y-yeah…?” He finally said a little quietly.
“Why are you here?” Mammon asked. “Because I am not in a good mood fer you goin bout-” he began.
Leviathan cheeks flushed. “Ek! I’m not here about that dumb Mammon!” He immediately physically cringed the moment the name slipped his mouth. “I mean Mammon-- but you better pay me back- I’m serious!” Leviathan shouted face all red, before realizing what he just said. Immediately at an instant all his confidence vanished. He slumped. “Fuck…” He whispered, cupping his face out of embarrassment and shame.
Mammon stared as he watched his brother's sense of self deflate right in front of him. Pitying the demon Mammon decided to show him some mercy, offering a hand which Levithian graciously took. “Thanks…” he mumbled.
“Yer welcome,” Mammon responded back. “So why are you here?”
“I was wondering if you wanted to watch The Tales of the Seven Lord movie marathon with me.” He mumbled. “If you’re not busy or anything!” He added quickly.
Mammon was in fact not busy. Truthfully, he was planning on sulking on his bed, going on Devilgram to stalk Diavolo’s page, and sniffing Diavolo’s coat like a total weirdo. But Levithian didn’t need to know that part. Especially the coat part.
“I’m not busy.” Mammon responded truthfully, he paused and stared at Levithian suspiciously. “Yer not askin me this cuz I broke up with Diavolo, right?”
Leviathan cringed, trying to keep his facial expression neutral. “No…?” He finally said and instantly regretted it. Leviathan was such a bad liar.
Mammon snorted. “Ya know- I don’t even care.” He said simply. “We’re going to yer room for this?” He asked, glancing over to him.
Leviathan awkwardly nodded.
Mammon then began walking towards Leviathan’s room, Leviathan a few steps behind him. He opened the door, letting himself in. Behind him Levithian closed the door, watching as Mammon got two of his bean bags out and placed them in front of his TV. Mammon flopped himself on the seat, and lazily stared up at the ceiling. Leviathan sighed getting out blankets from his closet, throwing them at Mammon, which Mammon did nothing about. Leviathan bit his lips. Usually Mammon at this point would go on a spew about respecting your older brother- but he really didn’t even react to his action. It was certain that Diavolo messed him up badly.
“Yer gonna put on the movie?” Mammon asked in the muffled blanket, which he still didn’t remove the covers from his face.
Leviathan deadpanned. “Yeah yeah- calm your ass.” He mumbled, turning on his remote and flipping to his download movie section. He clicked on the first movie by which time Mammon got his head off the covers.
The movie was good. Mind numbing. Leviathan always got chatty during these films, pointing out Easter eggs and lore that wasn’t added from the books. Then Mammon would also ask a dumb question, making Leviathan furious and proceeding to over-explain the subject. It was a good distraction from everything. Other than a few breaks for food and bathroom, they were mostly left in each other's company. It was nice, they didn’t get to spend much time together one on one than Mammon likes to admit.
By the time the movies were over, it was farther late than either of them expected. Mammon let out a loud yawn before stretching his legs out. “Welp.” Mammon said, turning Leviathan attention towards him. “I’m gonna head to my room now.”
“Uh…” Leviathan said, “okay.”
Mammon gave Leviathan a pat on the back before getting up to head out. He was half way to the door when Leviathan stopped him. “Mammon.” He suddenly said, making Mammon full on stop. He turned around to look at him.
Leviathan was fidgeting. “Are you going to be okay?”
Mammon bit his lips. He let out a small sigh before giving a small nod and smile. “Yeah Levi. Just give me some time and the Great Mammon will jump back up.”
Leviathan scoffed. “You better.”
He laughed at that before finally leaving the room, closing the door shut tightly. He walked to his room, entering his room, closing the door shut before collapsing onto his bed.
Since he’s weak, Mammon begrudgingly got out Diavolo’s coat under his blanket and held it tightly. He loved him so much it hurted. All this fighting only left them miserable, he hated it and he knew something had to change before something worse happened to them.
He felt like he was in a trance as he stared at a particular pattern on Diavolo’s coat. And as time passes, he can hear his younger brothers whisper to each other outside his room. This was only confirmed when his door opened by an inch allowing for the outside light to be shed through, only for it to be closed shut.
Satan seems to be mad at Leviathan. Beelzebub was saying something, they were all saying something. Mammon couldn’t make out what it was but he can tell all of them had an underlying concern hidden in their tones. The whispers continued and Mammon just laid there.
The whispers continued and continued until suddenly it stopped. He can hear pairs of feet dispersing away from his door. His door opened and closed. Someone was walking towards his bed, and Mammon had a sinking feeling he knew who it was. He could feel his mattress dipping as a new weight sat on his bed.
“How do you feel?” Lucifer asked.
“Like Dia stepped on my heart and stomped on it beyond repair.” He mumbled, as he shifted his weight up to be sitting up. “I’m done this time. I’m actually breaking up with him.” He announced, his heart aching at the notion of it all.
“Good.” Lucifer said.
Mammon stared at Lucifer in disbelief, before deflating. “Wow- I always knew that ya didn’t approve of our relationship but couldn’t ya try to deny that-“ he began.
“Mammon.“
“Like I know I’m ruining his reputation because he’s associated with me in such a personal way- I know I’m just a scummy little scumbag that don’t deserve him-“ He said, his heart tightening.
“Mammon…” Lucifer attempted again.
“I know you think I don’t deserve him ‘cause ya think I’m using him for his money—“
“Mammon!” Lucifer shouted knocking Mammon out of a deprecating trance. Mammon shrank which made Lucifer sigh. “Are you going to let me speak before you make all those…distasteful remarks about yourself?”
“Sorry.” He murmured.
Lucifer sighed, his pride was against it but his eyes softened. “The reason I don’t approve of your relationship with Diavolo is because he hurts you.” Mammon shot up, immediately opening his mouth to deny his claims. “Mammon shut up.” Mammon deflates again. “While he doesn’t mean too, it’s evident that he still does. Whenever you two fight, it often leaves me to pick up the pieces just for you to go back to him. These exchanges make me concerned, and I’m not the only one whose concern.”
Mammon frowned. His younger stupid and begrudgingly caring brothers. He hates making any of them worry but here he is making them all worry.
Mammon couldn’t say anything with substance so he said this instead. “I love him.” He mumbled. “I love him more than I believe I could.”
Lucifer nods. “I know.” He paused, thinking about what he's about to say carefully. “However, maybe the best thing you can do for both of you, is let go.”
He frowned.
“You don’t have to make your choice immediately, just think about it.” Lucifer added when it became unbearably quiet.
Mammon nodded, he glanced at Lucifer awkwardly. “Can ya stay?”
Lucifer pride persisted, but he softened and nodded. Mammon scootched over to allow Lucifer to slip into bed with him. Lucifer graciously slipped his jacket off, setting it down on his coach, he was distracted enough for Mammon to hide Diavolo’s coat off the bed and under it.
Lucifer slipped underneath the covers and allowed himself to relax.
“You smell like Demonus.” Mammon whispered.
Lucifer sighed letting an unpleasant hum slip out. “Go to sleep.”
Mammon laughed at that, making Lucifer smile, begrudgingly.
“Thanks for doing this.” Mammon mumbled as he handed Lucifer a box of Diavolo items.
Lucifer stared, he took the box and surprisingly it was heavy. “How did you cumulate this much— is that a toothbrush?” He deadpanned suddenly feeling a vein pop out at the insinuation.
Mammon chuckled awkwardly. “Well… sometimes after date night, Diavolo didn’t want to go home—“
“Shut up.” Mammon shuts up. Lucifer massaged his temple, trying to ease his impending headache.
There was silence between the two brothers as one tries to get a grip at the mortification that Diavolo spent the night numerous times to have accumulated his own tooth brush.
“But I’m serious, thanks for doing this.” Mammon said again. “If I was doing it…” he trailed off.
“You wouldn’t be able to break up with him.” Lucifer completed his sentence. Mammon nodded glumly. He sighed at Mammon’s pitiful sight. “Chin up. I’ll be back soon.”
Mammon nodded, waving goodbye as Lucifer existed.
The walk to the castle was uneventful. It was a good day, all things considered. Lucifer knew it wouldn’t be a good day any longer. He sighed as he entered the castle, Barbatos present to greet him. With just a look, Barbatos understood everything.
“Lord Diavolo isn’t going to take this well.” He states.
Lucifer sighed. “Mammon's decision is final. I’m just present to ensure this course of action actually happens.”
Barbatos let out an incremental hum.
The rest of the walk was quiet. When they reached the door, Barbatos gave an apologetic stare at Lucifer before knocking on the door. “Lord Diavolo, Lucifer is present.”
There was a silence before he answered. “Come in.”
Barbatos nodded, opening the door to allow Lucifer entrance. Immediately Lucifer entered the room, he could see Diavolo tense up when he saw the box in Lucifer's hands. Barbatos took one look at this exchange and as soon as Lucifer fully entered the room, closed the door tightly. Lucifer stared at the closed door for a slight moment. However he doesn’t beat around the bush and walks straight up to him and places the belongings down in front of him.
Diavolo stares at it, dread present upon his face. There was a pregnant silence as tension filled the room. Lucifer grimaced.
“What is this?” Diavolo asked with a lingering tone of dread present.
Without a beat, Lucifer responded, “It’s all your belongings that Mammon has accumulated throughout your relationship together.” He states eyeing the box. “Since Mammon and you are no longer together.”
There was a loud crack echoing throughout the room, he slowly eyed the source of the sound. His brows furrowed. A chunk of Diavolo’s table was gone, crushed by Diavolo himself. Diavolo glanced at what he did, letting go of the remnants of the wood splinters. He whipped his hand clean from the remnants and focused his attention on Lucifer. His usual cheerful demeanor dissipated and was replaced with a cold and unforgiving glare.
“Ah,” he finally stated. “Is that so?”
“Yes,” Lucifer said with whatsoever no hesitation. “That’s what my brother wished to do so I shall help him proceed with the separation process.” Diavolo’s eyes twitched.
Diavolo stared at the box, a lump forming in his throat and collapsed into his chair. He stared at the box with pure hatred. “You did something…” Diavolo mumbled, his heart aching, “Mammon… he loves me.” He began, “he wouldn’t leave unless a strong outside source influences him.”
Lucifer stared at Diavolo unapologetically. “I did no such of any sort.”
The two demons stared at each other, before Diavolo finally broke it, maybe out of shame or heartbreak. It didn’t really matter to Lucifer.
“May I be excused?” Lucifer asked. Diavolo gave a heavy nod.
As soon as Lucifer left the room he could hear a loud bang coming from Diavolo’s office. He sighed appreciative of the fact he was the one to do this instead of Mammon.
It was Mammon’s first day back to RAD ever since he officially broke up with Diavolo. And he was so ungodly paranoid. Mammon was afraid out of nowhere he'll pop up, confront him about the breakup and at that point Mammon knows he’ll cry. So he made sure that he’s with at least one of his brothers to discourage Diavolo from conversing with him. And as the day passed on, the lack of Diavolo present made Mammon sloppy. So when Beelzebub said he had to go to practice and couldn’t walk him home, Mammon thought it would be fine. It wasn’t.
As soon as Beelzebub disappeared, Diavolo came into sight. Mammon's heart tightened at the sight of him. He looked worn down, and it was his fault.
“Mammon…” he whispered, his voice raspy, grasping onto Mammon’s sleeve. “May we speak?”
And that’s how despite everything, Mammon ended up being in a room with Diavolo. They were in an empty classroom, Diavolo making sure to lock the door to ensure they are undisturbed.
“So um…” Mammon spoke first, hating the evident tension between them. “How are you Dia— Lord Diavolo?” He asked formally.
Diavolo's frown deepened. “I- no.” He whined. “Don’t call me that!” He hissed out, his eyes filled with tears. “It’s either Dia or Diavolo from you-! Not lord.” He hissed out.
Mammon bit his lips and glanced away. “I- I’m not in a relationship with ya anymore, it’s not right—“
He scoffed at that. “When have you ever cared about formality?” Diavolo retorted.
Finally Mammon looked at Diavolo. In front of him the future Demon King was almost to tears. Looking closely now he can see clear eyebags present on his features, he looked exhausted and Mammon wanted so desperately to ease his tension doing anything. Still, Mammon couldn’t. Despite everything, Lucifer was right.
They were doing more harm than good to each other. And Mammon didn’t want to do that to Diavolo, not him. Not the demon who he loved and cherished so much, that for the first time imaginable he was a stand side between Diavolo wishes and his brothers.
“And why can’t we be in one.” Diavolo finally pleaded, he grabbed Mammon’s hand and pulled it to his lips.
Mammon faltered at that. He took a deep breath in and out before saying these next words. “Dia- Lord Diavolo, I don’t doubt yer love for me. I know ya love me but you refuse to see yer errors and that hurts me intentionally or not.” Mammon said, “that doesn’t mean I’m innocent either because I hurt you too. An action that hurts more than us fighting.”
Diavolo gaze hardened. “I-I- I can change!” He begged.
“Maybe… but for now we need to be separate.” Mammon reconfirmed.
Diavolo gazed into Mammon's eyes. He knew that what Mammon was saying was only the truth however he wished Mammon at that moment lied to him. His face fell, his anguish visible. It took a moment before Diavolo was able to recollect himself, he glanced nervously before asking his last request. “May I have a final kiss?”
And the weak hearted Mammon agreed.
He caressed Mammon’s cheek, pulling the smaller demon in. They exchanged glances before Mammon closed his eyes, allowing Diavolo to pull him in. The first kiss was ginger, as Diavolo was trying to savor this moment with his one true love. He leaned in to deepen the kiss, wrapping his hands around Mammon’s waist to keep in place.
Mammon was the one to finally push Diavolo away. He took another look at him. “Bye my Diavolo.”
Diavolo breath hitched, pain obvious in his eyes, still he repeated the returning phrase. “Farewell my Mammon.”
At that Mammon left the room, speeding away. Tears were already streaming down his face. Diavolo watched as Mammon left. He touched his lips with his index and middle finger, savoring the remnants of Mammon’s lip upon his. He already missed his Mammon so dearly.
“What’s wrong with Mammon?” Beelzebub asked, staring at him who was currently bawling his eyes on the sofa.
“Lord Diavolo cornered him when he was heading home, and they did their corny lover routine bullshit and well…” Belphegor pointed at him. “He’s now like that.”
Beelzebub frowned, cautiously he made his way to him. “Are you okay?”
Mammon sniffed. “I— everything just hurts now.” He curled up into a ball.
“Is there anything I can help you with?” Beelzebub asked.
Mammon shook his head. Beelzebub's head dropped. “I need time.” Mammon whispered out loudly, trying to convince himself more than anyone.
Beelzebub and Belphegor exchanged looks at each other. They were worried about their brother. Awkwardly they gave pleasantries to him before running away. They walked in silence to their room.
“You okay Beel?” Belphegor asked.
Beelzebub bit his lips. “If I hadn’t—“
“Don’t do that. Lord Diavolo would have talked with Mammon one way or the other. Mammon’s state is not your fault.” Belphegor yawned out. “It’s Lord Diavolo.”
Beelzebub frowned, messing with his sleeves. “Yeah, I know… but still.”
The twins were silent. Belphegor knew exactly what Beelzebub meant, but there was truthfully nothing they could do about it. His gaze turned towards where Mammon was situated, before fixing his attention to his twin. “Lets order spicy food for dinner tonight.”
At that Beelzebub smiled softly. It was no secret that out of the brothers, Mammon especially loves spicy food. And despite everything, spicy food seemed to always lighten Mammon’s mood. “That’s a good idea.”
“Is the meal to your liking, my lord?” Barbatos asked.
Diavolo didn’t answer. He just stared at his dish, moving the mash around his plate focusing on how it spreads around the plate.
“My lord?” Barbatos repeated.
This time seemed to snap Diavolo away from whatever trance he was fixated in. “Oh!” He responded, as he spooned in the mash he was playing around with. “It’s delicious as always.” He said politely.
Barbatos stared at Diavolo before nodding. Barbatos hesitated before asking. “Are you alright, my lord?”
Diavolo stared at his plate. He lowered his spoon, his grip tightening before he allowed it to be down. “May you leave Barbatos?” He asked in a calm tone. “I’d like to be alone.”
Barbatos sighed before nodding. He listened to Barbatos’ footsteps fade away as he left the dining room for him to be left alone. He stared at his plate, his appetite dissipated. He was simply not hungry. He furrowed his brows. “What a waste of food,” he found himself mumbling.
At some point, Diavolo must have left the dining room because he found himself roaming around the castle, unfortunately left to reminisce about the beginning of their relationship.
How loud and brilliant Mammon managed to catch his attention. How despite Lucifer’s complaints about the greed demon, he still softens every time he enters the room. How despite being a demon, he has a true genuine kindness that the rest of his brothers lack. He’s aware of his brother's insecurities and tries to lighten them by allowing them to vent all their frustration onto him. How Mammon saw and respected him as Diavolo first, and the Prince second. He just couldn’t help but fall in love with him, and yes as they finally got into a relationship and got to know each other more intimately, he has fallen harder for the greed demon.
He knew his possessiveness was hurting their relationship, but he couldn’t help it. Not when there were his brothers he had to compete with for his attention. Not when he had to compete with Lucifer, because throughout their long termed relationship, Mammon never reached out to him for help- no it was always Lucifer. Diavolo bawled his fist up. He couldn’t- no wouldn’t be able to take it if he had to compete with all of Devildom now.
There was too much competition to have all of Mammon’s undivided attention. All he wanted to do was to stick Mammon in his room where he could have his undivided attention for forevermore. He of course couldn’t act on that desire, but that thought was still present. It persists every time Mammon’s attention diverges from him, it’s a ugly feeling and want.
Yet due to his lack of change, he has lost Mammon. His fingers lingered on his lips. Diavolo's heart ached, he already missed him so much.
Barbatos was the one who told of Mephistopheles plan to publish the news of Mammon’s and his breakup in the RAD newspaper. Of course Barbatos didn't tell him the exact outcome but from what he can tell, it would have been a political and personal mess. The Royal Council, who already was skeptical of Mammon’s position to be his partner, would jump at the chance to attack Mammon and his ‘defaults.’ And then there’s Lucifer who would take this so personally, that any attempts in the future Lucifer would surely whisper into Mammon’s ear to dissuade him from taking any action involving him.
“Lord Diavolo?” Barbatos interrupted his train of thought. “Sir Mephistopheles is here.”
Diavolo calmly recomposed his facade. “Send him in.” He said, taking a sip of his tea. Barbatos bowed before he exited the room to bring in Mephistopheles. The demon sat across from Diavolo. The two sat in quiet silence as Barbatos went out of the room to roll out the dessert trolley to the two pairs. Barbatos prepared Mephistopheles tea, refilling Diavolo’s own cup which Diavolo gracefully thanked for. He set the desserts on the table before placing the milk and sugar cube down for personal usage.
Diavolo nodded in acknowledgement giving permission to Barbatos he could leave. Barbatos in return gave a bow to the two parties and promptly left, shutting the door tightly.
He watched as Mephistopheles poured an abhorrent amount of sugar in his tea, waiting for the power to dissolve fully before taking a sip. Diavolo placed his teacup down before giving a curt smile to Mephistopheles.
“Mephisto.” He started turning the attention towards him. “My friend!”
“Lord Diavolo?” Mephistopheles shifted his gaze to the Prince.
“Don’t publish that article about Mammon’s and mine breakup.” He states simply.
Mephistopheles smiles thins. “How did you find out about that?”
“Does it matter?" Diavolo stated. “What you're attempting to do is divulging private and sensitive information to the public, and I will not hesitate to strip you from your position on the RAD newspaper personally and publicly.”
Mephistopheles stared at Diavolo, before drifting his gaze upon the desserts. “Understood.”
Diavolo smiled at that. “Good.”
The two demons were silent. Diavolo smiled thinned as he reached out to sip his tea. Mephistopheles shifted his attention to Diavolo. “Lord Diavolo, if I may?”
Diavolo glanced up, taking a sip before nodding.
“Are you still hopeful that Mammon will get back with you?”
His smile thins. Gently Diavolo placed his teacup back on the table. His stare cold and avoid any readable emotion to the average demon. But this was Mephistopheles, and he knew.
Mephistopheles let out a small chuckle at that, folding his arms. “I see.”
Mammon greed was getting worse, and he knew the reason why.
Greed is subjective, to most people when greed is presented they often think of monetary value. But greed is so much more than that. It bleeds through every aspect of want, and throughout Diavolo and his relationship his greed was stagnant due to Diavolo’s affection. Diavolo fulfilled his greed with his verbal and physical affection. And now with him out of the picture, the want to fill that void Diavolo left with money is so and tremendously present it sinks to every aspect of his life.
Mammon had managed to sell a portion of Leviathan figurines, which he immediately regretted. And then came Asmodeus jewelry, and then Satan’s prized books. It was shameful, but he couldn’t help it. He needed to fill the void so bad but it was never enough.
Of course Mammon knew what would fill the void but he couldn’t.
So here he was sitting in a pile of grimm staring at them in disgust. He hated himself, and all his brothers can tell. They weren’t that much up his ass about him stealing their belongings, they knew this was the aftermath of Diavolo’s and his breakup. He was so extremely grateful but he knew their patience would wear off eventually.
“Mammon.” He looked up to see Lucifer. He furrowed his brows, he didn’t hear him come in.
He sighed, burrowing his face in his hands. “I’m really off my game.” He groaned.
Lucifer didn’t respond but instead sat down on the ground next to Mammon.
“You’re struggling.” He states.
“Well no duh.” Mammon snaps back at him, before shrinking at what he just said. “M’sorry.”
Lucifer sighed, shaking his head in disbelief. “I’ll excuse your manners for today, Mammon.”
“Thanks, I guess…” Mammon responded back staring at a coin in his hand that he was fiddling with.
The two brothers sat in silence, for a moment. Lucifer was the one to break that silence, “you’ll get through this.” He stated as a fact, but Mammon knew that was how he offered comfort, or otherwise his pride would persist.
Mammon took that gesture, laying his head on Lucifer’s shoulder. “I know.” He whispered. He found Lucifer hand upon his, gracing him with a tight squeeze. That touch was grounding, helping him focus on his present emotion. He closed his eyes and allowed him to run through his course, comforted by the fact that Lucifer would be right by his side as he went through it.
Mammon was in a bad mood, and it had to do with the so-called “Great Witch Maddi," still present in Devildom. He hates that she’s here, not only because of what she did to him in the past, but because of her stupid insistence on taking Diavolo’s hand in marriage. Sure by now Diavolo and him haven't been in a relationship for a decade or so, but still.
Mammon can hear Diavolo so vividly in a dreamlike joy talk about their future, that the thought of anyone else but him makes him sick.
He shouldn’t feel this way but he does. It’s stupid and childlike, but he couldn’t help it.
It was supposed to be a quick dinner to invite the Human Realm and the Celestial Realm and their respective leaders to cement the last details before the actual choosing of the exchange students can partake. However Maddi, perfectly decided that this would be the perfect time to shoot her shot. Boldly declaring that she’ll be staying in Devildom until Diavolo accepts his proposal. And well, that happened a year ago. Yet Maddi is still present in Devildom to much of everyone’s dismay.
“Do ya think Di- Lord Diavolo is gonna accept her stupid proposal?” Mammon asked glumly, voicing his deepest insecurity.
The brothers full on stopped in their tracks, the sound of their utensils coming to a full on screech. Every brother glanced at Lucifer, for him to say something. Lucifer sighed, mouthing the word coward to all of them. Which each brother had their respective reaction.
“No.” Lucifer states.
Mammon glances up and frowns deepen. “How are ya so sure?” He pouts. “Like Maddi is so stupidly pretty and she’s powerful and-”
“Lord Diavolo is not interested in her.” Lucifer states, leaving the rest unspoken. He’s not interested in her because he only has eyes for you. They all knew this, and deep down Mammon knew this.
Mammon stared down at his plate. “Sure.” He murmured.
To say the least, dinner was quite awkward afterwards.
“Lucifer.” Maddie nodded.
Lucifer nodded back, “Lady Maddi.”
The two stared at each other studying one another, before Maddi broke the contact first. “How’s your…courtship coming?” Lucifer asked, in a skeptical and deadpan tone.
Maddi grinned at that, giving a sly smile. “I’m thinking I’m wearing Lord Diavolo down, it won’t be long!”
“You repeated this a month ago.” Lucifer said sardonically. Maddi tsked, twirling her curl playfully, glaring at him with a plastic smile adoring her face.
“I’m wearing him down.” She states again.
Lucifer sighed, before turning his attention towards Diavolo’s office. He gestured that way, “if I may?”
Maddi nodded, stepping to the side to allow him to pass. Lucifer due diligently passed her keeping himself composed enough to not curse the witch in front of her. Although as soon as he entered Diavolo’s office and closed the door tightly, he allowed a few curses to slip from his mouth. He glanced up to see Diavolo absolutely miserable.
Lucifer headaches. Strangely he was getting a strange sense of déjà vu.
“Lord Diavolo.” Lucifer greeted him.
Diavolo just nodded numbly at Lucifer, gesturing for Lucifer to sit. He does, and there for a couple minutes sat in complete silence.
“I don’t know what to do.” Diavolo finally said. “He rejected her numerous times- I was polite- I was direct- I-“ Diavolo stammered near the end. “She’s never going to leave.” He finally concluded, with a hint of desperation clinging to his words. Diavolo put his head into his hands, tugging on his hair.
Lucifer deadpanned.
Diavolo slumped. He rested his head on his table, he let out a groan before the office returned to silence. Diavolo bit his cheeks a couple of times before asking the next thing, “how’s Mammon?”
“Are you asking as my boss or my brother’s previous partner—“ he began.
“Lucifer!”
“He’s fine.” Lucifer said curtly.
Diavolo stared at Lucifer.
Lucifer lowered his gaze. “If I may?”
“You may.” Diavolo allowed.
Lucifer's pleasant expression shifted to a look of melancholy. “Is it really that unbelievable that Mammon moved on, and isn’t hung up on you?” He is, but Diavolo doesn’t need to know that. “Are you so…” he stopped himself. Lucifer took a moment to recollect himself. “Do you not want Mammon to be happy?”
Diavolo didn’t say anything, momentarily.“I want him to be happy by my side.” He finally managed to say aloud.
Lucifer let out a displeased hmph. He turned his attention towards the masses of paper Diavolo needed to look over. Unapologetically, Lucifer set the pile down right in front of Diavolo. “You need to look over this before the next student council meeting.”
Diavolo slumped to the back of his chair, he groaned.
Diavolo didn’t believe in what Lucifer claimed. At least he didn’t want to believe in him. There wasn’t anyone new in Mammon’s life, Diavolo was sure of that. His informants were good, and they had no reason to lie to him if they knew what’s good for them.
Yet that singular chance of Mammon being over him, Diavolo needed to know.
That’s why he resorted to following the greed demon throughout RAD.
Is it unethical? Yes. Would he get in trouble- depends on who catches him. Does he care? No.
It didn’t help that it was easy to follow the demon around. He simply casted an incognito spell, and there! No one of normal power should be able to catch a sense of his presence as he followed Mammon around.
He watched Mammon throughout the day. He watched as he dozed off in class, making the cutest droopy face that Diavolo ever saw. He watched him as he messed with his younger brothers, an ache filling his chest wishing he could be next to Mammon. But most importantly, Diavolo watched as Mammon flinched whenever the subject of Maddi supposed courtship with him was taking place. Diavolo beamed. Lucifer was wrong, Mammon was not over him. However his short celebration came to a quick close as he watched out of nowhere Maddi approaching Mammon.
It was by that time, the last period of the day finally ended. Mammon was making his way home, alone due to his brothers after school activities. Mammon had to go to his locker to pick some of his belongings before he heads home. The hallway was empty, that’s where Maddi chose her time to strike.
Diavolo’s mood soured, as Mammon visibly panicked at the sight of the human.
“Mammon!” Maddi called out in an overly sweet tone.
“Erk!” Mammon let out, as he tried to back away from her. Unfortunately for him, Maddi was able to loop her arm around Mammon's, pulling Diavolo’s greed demon close to her. “Uh- Maddi…” Mammon greeted.
Maddi hummed, acknowledging him. “We need to talk about your lil relationship with Lord Diavolo.”
Mammon expression saddened. “I- Di— Lord Diavolo and I aren’t together anymore.” He said sullenly.
“Really? Because you seem to have your hand wrapped all around him.” Maddi stated.
“I- uh. Sorry?” Mammon muttered, trying to pull away from her.
“Sorry isn’t going to cut it.” She said in a sing-song tone. “Unless you want him to know about…that incident.” Mammon froze, pure terror etched on his face. “You better do something. Unless you want Lord Diavolo to know how much of a failure of a demon you are. You got that?”
Mammon stiffly nodded. Finally Maddi detached herself from him. She let out a cheeky laugh. “I’m glad we came up with an understanding!” She said all tongue and cheek, before skipping away.
Mammon stood there, he was shaking. Diavolo never felt so much static anger. He watched as Mammon made his way back to the House of Lamentation, only when he entered the house did Diavolo speed back to RAD.
He entered his office. He smiled at the sight of Barbatos present. Once he sat down he turned to the butler. “Barbatos?”
“Yes my lord?”
“May you call in Lady Maddi? I need to converse with her.”
Barbatos studied Diavolo for a moment before nodding. He exited the room, and Diavolo was alone with his thoughts. He took a deep breath, he needed to calm down. He shoved every thought of Mammon- all the love and want and yearning he has for the demon deep down. He got himself rather composed when Barbatos announced, “Lord Diavolo, Lady Maddi is here.”
He grit his teeth, taking another deep breath. “Come in.”
All that composure he managed to build instantly vanished as soon as he saw Maddi’s smug expression. He watched as Maddi made her way to sit across from him, persecuting every movement she made. Maddi shifted uncomfortably, the longer he stared without saying anything.
“Lord Diavolo?” She questioned.
“You need to leave.” Diavolo found himself saying, skipping any pleasantries.
Maddi laughed awkwardly only stopping when the Prince didn’t share the same reaction. “I- Lord Diavolo I thought I made it clear—“
“I don’t care.” Diavolo interrupted. “You will be going home today in one or in pieces, see if I care.”
Maddi paled, shocked by the Prince's vulgar attitude by the usually cordial demon. She quickly recovered. “If you try anything—“
“Oh please. You aren’t as important as you deem yourself. Yes it’ll set the exchange program back by a few decades but eventually it shall go forward. I don’t know if you know but I am a very patient man, I can afford to wait a few more years.” He states, smiling. He glanced at Maddi before scoffing. “Unlike you, as soon as you…vanish, your spot and influence would immediately be taken over by your very willing followers.” Diavolo got up from his chair, towering over her. “You are insignificant.”
“I—“ Maddi stammered, pure confusion etched on her face. “I- where is this coming from?” She found himself asking.
Diavolo stared at her until she squirmed at his gaze. “Mammon.” Immediately Maddi stared, her eyes filled with clarity.
Instantaneously she cringed, a look of panic appearing on her face. “Lord Diavolo what I said—“
“Shut up.” Maddi closed her mouth, Diavolo took a deep breath before peering down at her. “Mammon will and always will have me ‘wrapped’ around his fingers, as he is the only soul that I deem to be worthy of being my partner. How dare you even dare to grace your…obscene presence in front of him?”
There was complete silence. Diavolo stared at her coldly, before looking away. “Barbatos!” He announced. A second later, Barbatos entered the room. “Please escort Lady Maddi back to the Human Realm.”
Barbatos nodded. “Lady Maddi?”
Maddi, shaking, looked up to Barbatos, as he gestured her to stand. Slowly she pulled herself up, walking hesitantly out of the office. She stopped at the exit, “my belongings—“ she began.
“Don’t bother.” Diavolo interrupted. “All your belongings will be sent to you shortly.”
Maddi nodded, following Barbatos stiffly out of the office.
Diavolo took a deep breath. “Good riddance.” He found himself muttering, as he sat down back in his chair. He groaned as he placed his head in his hands. Despite his tiresome state, Diavolo found himself relieved.
Maddi was finally gone.
Mammon took a deep breath in and out. He could do this.
“Mammon.” Barbatos snapped him out of his trance, “Lord Diavolo is ready for you.”
He nodded, stiffly getting up from his chair to get up to follow Barbatos. He stared at the floor, focusing on it to a point he noticed a dead fly on the carpet. Cautiously he made his way to the seat across from Diavolo, ensuring he didn't glance up to see Diavolo’s expression. He stiffly sat in the chair, fiddling with his hand as he settled in.
“Mammon…” Diavolo said softly. Mammon looked up, seeing Diavolo soft and open expression. His heart ached. “Are you hungry? You just came in time for afternoon snacks.”
That was a lie. Diavolo ate at noon sharp, it was one now. Mammon knew Diavolo knew he knew this fact, but he didn’t call him out on that. Then there’s the snacks, he furrowed his brows. On the platter, there was Fried Scorpion Sandwiches accompanied with vinegar and tartar side. While Mammon knew Diavolo didn’t despise this dish, he also knew he wasn’t a huge enthusiast of the dish either. His heart swelled.
“Thanks…” he found himself saying, clumsily taking a sandwich and biting into the bread. It was delicious, like it always is.
Diavolo smiled at him, chuckling slightly. He grabbed a napkin and dabbed the grease on the corners of Mammon’s lip. “There we go.”
Mammon cheeks involuntarily flushed, backing away from Diavolo just a smidge away, before stuffing the rest of the sandwich into his mouth. He told out his hand signaling him to wait a little as he chewed.
“Um.. D-Lord Diavolo.” Mammon began.
“Lady Maddi is gone.” Diavolo said cheerfully, as he held out the kettle to pour Mammon a cup of tea. He poured a quarter of milk into his cup and four sugar cubes, just the way he likes it, before handing it to Mammon, coaster in hand.
“Eh.” Mammon deadpanned, as he gracefully accepted the drink. “Wait when?”
“Yesterday.” Diavolo replied.
“Oh.” Mammon said dumbly. He took a cautious sip. “Well I guess I can just go now…” he found himself saying, getting up from his seat. “Don’t wanna bother ya—“
“Stay.” Diavolo interrupted, with an earnest expression. “Please, stay.”
Mammon stared for a moment at the Prince, hating himself in that moment as he sat back down. “Okay.”
Lucifer stared daggers at the empty second born chair. He was late, dinner was already served and he chose to stay absent. He glanced up at his brothers, bearing into their souls to see if they knew anything about the lack of the greed demon appearance. “Has anyone seen Mammon?”
His brothers said their respective no’s, all for a quiet glutton demon. Lucifer locked onto contact with him, in turn making Beelzebub flinch. “Beelzebub?”
Beelzebub frowned, swallowing his food before he spoke. “Saw him head to Lord Diavolo’s office.”
Lucifer's mood instantly soured, it didn’t help that there were various sounds of exasperation that his brothers allowed to slip out. “I see.” Lucifer finally managed to say with a surprising calm, that freaked out everyone.
“Mammon-“ Lucifer began.
It was two in the morning when Mammon finally got back home. “Don’t.” He interrupted. “I know.”
Lucifer sighed, massaging his temple. Mammon cringed, “m’sorry.”
“What.” Belphegor growled, as he slowly began shifting to his demon form, his claws making indentation on the table.
“Belphegor.” Lucifer warned, glowering his gaze.
“I- no!” Belphegor screamed. He glared at Diavolo before turning his hateful glare at the rest of his eyes, before settling his gaze on Lucifer. “How dare you- Lilith! It’s because of those…disgraceful humans she died and yet you agreed to this!” He shouted and his voice ached with hurt.
“Did all of you know this but me?!” Belphegor found himself screaming.
The brothers stayed silent, absolute admission to their guilt, absolutely frustrating Belphegor.
Diavolo cringed at this interaction. He truly believed that it would have been long enough for Belephegor to heal to be open enough for the exchange program to proceed. However grief is truly a fickle thing.
Belphegor grinned his teeth, glaring at all of them. Before promptly turning to leave. He stormed out of the Student Council room, promptly slamming the door shut as he exited the room.
An awkward silence followed afterwards. Lucifer cleared his throat, “I’m sorry about that Lord Diavolo.”
“It’s rather fine Lucifer.” Diavolo assured.
Under his breath, Satan whispered something, before Lucifer could even do something, Mammon gave a warning glance at Satan promptly shutting down any potential trouble Satan was going to give Lucifer.
Diavolo coughed to clear his throat. “Well let’s adjourn this meeting.”
No one really responded to his comment, as they quietly gathered their belongings to leave. Beelzebub was the first one to head out, surprising no one as most likely he’s heading out to chase after his twin. Slowly but surely everyone exited out until there was Diavolo, Mammon, and Lucifer left in the room.
Mammon awkwardly glanced at Diavolo, but before he could even mutter a word, Lucifer picked Mammon by the collar and dragged him out of the room.
“Lucifer!” Mammon found himself hissing.
“Shush.” Lucifer commands, which Mammon diligently followed, cursing himself in his mind.
Mammon grumbled to himself, focusing his vision on Diavolo until all sight of him was gone. He slumped, ignoring all the looks Lucifer was giving him.
Dinner was awkward to say the least. The youngest born wasn’t present leaving Lucifer to stare daggers at everyone, especially his empty chair. It was too much of a point that they all made excuses to leave the table, leaving their meals unfinished. Even Beelzebub, known for gluttony, excused himself leaving a bite or two present on his plate.
The two oldest were the only ones left at the table. Quietly, Lucifer got up from his chair and gathered all the dishes.
Mammon sighed, a part of him wishing he left the same time that his other brothers left. He glanced up at Lucifer, mentally preparing himself before speaking up. “Do.. er… do ya want help?”
Lucifer stiffened, before responding with a slow nod.
Together they gathered all the dirty dishes and carried them all to the sink. Lucifer was on cleaning duty while Mammon was on drying and putting away duty. Together they worked as a unit, quickly getting to the half way point of the dishes being clean.
“Belphie didn’t mean what he said, Lucifer.” Mammon said clearly. “He’s justa emotional- Lilith did a lot for all of us.”
Lucifer stiffened, staring at the piles of dishes needed to be clean. He couldn’t say what he wanted to say, his pride didn’t permit it. Mammon understood that, he sighed looking away.
“Just don’t do anything ya gonna regret…” Mammon paused. “Ya hear me?”
Lucifer numbly nodded. At that Mammon smiled, pleased at himself.
The two did the rest of the dishes in silence.
The room was echoing.
“You did what!” Beelzebub screamed out loud, smashing the table. Mammon narrowed his eyes, Lucifer flinched a slight.
Mammon numbly glanced at Beelzebub, before shifting his gaze back to Lucifer.
“Belphegor is in the human world for the exchange program.” Lucifer stated calmly.
He stared at his brother, really examining every movement he made. Lucifer didn’t look back.
The exchange program was something else, to say the least.
MC arrival resurfaced numerous issues that the brothers bottled up a long time ago. Truly without MC, the demon brothers wouldn’t have gotten as close as they did again. Without MC, Belphegor wouldn’t have gotten the closure- he so desperately needed.
Everything is fine now. However, that’s ignoring the fact that MC believes that Diavolo for some reason despises them. They don’t know why, they don’t believe they have done anything to receive this passive aggressiveness.
“MC?” Belphegor said, snapping MC out of their trance. MC looked up to see Belphegor accompanied with Beelzebub, Asmodeus, and Satan. “Mind if we join you?”
They shook their head, giving the permission for the respective demons to accompany them onto the coach.
“What’s on your mind?” Satan asked.
MC bit their lips, awkwardly. “I think Lord Diavolo doesn’t like me.”
Immediately the brothers bursted out laughing, stunning the already confused MC.
“Am I missing something?” MC hissed out glaring at the brothers. Belphegor slumped onto MC shaking his head, “nope- but you’re absolutely right with your assumption.”
MC expression flattened. “Eh.”
“Darling,” Asmodeus chimed in after his laughter died down, "it's not your fault, it’s just Lord Diavolo being Lord Diavolo.”
MC just stared, blankly. “That explains nothing.”
When Satan’s laughter died down, he sighed. “You’re close to Mammon.” He said as if that explained everything.
MC stiffened. They didn’t know what that had to do about Lord Diavolo's displeasure towards them. Yes it was true that Mammon is closest to them. After all, they have been through thick and thin together, and despite everything somewhat ended up living through it. Mammon’s MC first man, he’s their best friend- the first demon that MC trusted and continues to trust despite so many warning them otherwise.
“Okay?” MC shrugged. “What does that have to do with anything?”
The brothers stared at MC in confusion. “Darling…?” Asmodeus finally broke the confusion. “Are you joking with us?”
“Like is this a weird human thing that you do?” Belphegor added, eyeing MC suspiciously.
MC cheeks flushed, puffing their cheeks out in annoyance. “Okay- no!” They stated towards Asmodeus. “And no!” They pointed towards Belphegor.
Silence fell on the brothers as they actually proceeded what MC announced.
“Huh.” Satan finally said.
“Huh what?!” MC asked, suddenly very defensive.
Satan just shakes his head. “No, I just expected Mammon to have told you this already.” MC furrowed their brows in suspicion. Satan signed, “well theirs no point of beating around it, after all the whole subject is public.” Satan looked straight in MC’s eyes. “Lord Diavolo and Mammon used to be in a romantic relationship.”
MC mouth gaped fully.
Beelzebub nodded to that, “it was quite serious too.” All the brothers nodded to that. “Lord Diavolo was making official preparations to start the decades-long Royal Bonding Ceremony with Mammon.”
Asmodeus gaped at that, while Satan raised a brow.
“Wait wait—!” Asmodeus interjected. “Did Mammon tell you that?!”
Beelzebub nodded. Asmodeus puffed his cheek in offense, “why didn’t he tell me?!”
Satan pinched the bridge of his nose, “Asmodeus, do you even hear yourself?” Asmodeus cringed, before smiling guilty. He gave Satan a guilty shrug. “That’s what I thought.”
There was so much information going on in MC’s head. Mammon and Lord Diavolo, together? MC did not expect that but now thinking about it, it made sense. Whenever they were near each other, they had a longing energy towards the other. Good to know MC wasn’t being delusional about that. Also what in the world was a ‘Royal Bonding Ceremony?’ MC didn’t even know where to start, MC then paused, head shooting up.
“Wait- used too?” MC finally interjected in the brothers' conversation.
The brothers visibly cringed, exchanging glances at one another for a hot while until Satan visibly flattened. He cleared his throat. “Well, while the two very visibly love and care about each other, they had…” Satan paused, glancing at Asmodeus edging him on to say something.
“They had communicated issues.” Asmodeus said simply.
Satan nodded. “Right.” He clicked his tongue, glancing away. “But because of those issues they broke up numerous times.”
“That’s being generous.” Belphegor said under his breath and stopped at his twin disapproval stare. Belphegor simply deflated and sighed.
“And they kept going back to each other- until Mammon officially called it quits.” He finished. Satan shook his head in disapproval, “and good riddance for that.”
Beelzebub nodded, a frown etched on his face. “Mammon was always so sad during that time…”
Belphegor hummed in agreement, snuggling closer to MC.
Asmodeus sighed wistfully. “Although they did make a cute couple.” He shakes his head and frowns. “What a shame.”
MC frowned, something is telling them that somehow they’re going to have to get involved.
That opportunity went sooner than expected. It was their routine check-in with Diavolo, an occasion that happens since the beginning of the exchange program to ensure that their wellbeing is well. Usually MC enjoys this time, as it provides them an opportunity to be away from the havoc that happens around the brothers. However with the new information that MC was given, they were not excited for this exchange.
Yet with little excuse to avoid the meeting, they went to meet Diavolo.
Already sitting down they had a gut feeling, and MC knew Diavolo could sense something off. They sat in silence as Barbatos filled their cups with tea and blessed them with his perfect pastries. After Barbatos bid the two farewell and closed the door completely shut, leaving MC wishing they were the one leaving instead.
Cautiously, MC took a sip of their tea and eyed Diavolo, who was just staring at them.
“Is something wrong?” Diavolo finally asked, with the usual smile on his face.
MC choked on their tea, resulting in a coughing fit that lasted a few minutes, with Diavolo watching awkwardly.
MC thought carefully on what to say next. Unfortunately for them, they were sitting in front of a person who has the ability to know whose lying or telling the truth.
They bit their lip awkwardly as the words managed to fumble out of their mouth, “I’m just…busy.” They managed to say. “You know how the brothers are like.” That was a half truth, good enough to keep Diavolo’s suspicion in bay.
Diavolo laughed at that. “Well they are truly a…colorful bunch of demons.” He paused, before exchanging a glance at MC. “I am using that expression correctly? Solomon told me about it but I’m not certain if it’s being used in the correct context.”
“Uh…it is?” MC responded. “I mean- the phrase is being used correctly.” They blabbed on.
He gave a smile at that, chucking a little. He let out a sigh and just stared at MC, making them squirm. His lips “You’re aware of the fact that I despise you.” Diavolo noted.
MC cringed, they slumped. “Despise is rather harsh.”
“It’s factual.” Diavolo replied, taking a sip from his cup.
“Ah.” They stared down at the pastries in front of them before taking the courage to look up. “Did Barbatos tell you?”
Diavolo nodded.
MC facial expression sulked, well they were truly fucked from the moment they got here. MC took a deep breath. “Lord Diavolo I by no mean meant any harm by becoming friends with Mammon- which by the way are relationship is strictly platonic- it’s just that Mammon is such a lovable goofball.” MC blabbered on.
Diavolo raised his hand to stop MC from speaking further. He took another sip of his tea before setting it down on his coaster. He looked up to meet MC eye to eye, and for a moment softened.
He took a deep breath in and shut his eyes shut. “I know.”
MC furrowed their brows. “Then why are you so hostile towards me…?” They questioned.
Diavolo didn’t answer for a moment. “It's childish.”
They scoffed. “Okay- are you going to tell me or—?” They stopped mid sentence and took a deep breath. “Sorry.” They said sheepishly.
“It’s alright.” Diavolo responded. “And to answer your question MC, it’s due to jealousy.” He admitted. “I know that your relationship is nothing but platonic but I can’t help it. I long for Mammon’s attention, something I’ve been deprived of for such a long time.”
They stared, their frown deepening.
“I sincerely apologize for my childish behavior, I hope you can have the heart to forgive me.” Diavolo said sincerely.
The tension in MC’s body loosen, as they just gave a sigh. “It’s fine.” They said finally. MC looked up, looking a bit apologetic. “Um Lord Diavolo, can I ask you something?”
Diavolo perked up before nodding.
“How did Mammon and you even break up?” MC asked.
He lowered his gaze, staring questioningly at MC. “They haven’t told you?”
“Well they were rather sparse with the detail and well asking Mammon seems…” They paused. “It seems insensitive. Plus the demons I asked were rather biased about the whole thing so I kinda wanna ask from a different perspective..?”
Diavolo gave a noncommittal hmph. He laid back in his chair and sighed. “The reason why we broke up is because of my possessive issues.” He said bluntly. “We got into fights because of it and it continued to the point of no return.”
“You still love him.” MC said.
Diavolo nodded. “I always will.” He said simply.
MC just stared at Diavolo before just groaning in frustration.
