“Man, that Batman costume is never going to get old,” Troy grinned, shaking his arms out around him. Abed was standing tall next to him, arms blanketed by his cape.

“It’s quite old, actually,” Abed told him. They’d had it since Greendale, and he still got into costume and character in once a year, mask and all, to entertain the neighbor kids. They tended to think anyone at home was just dressed up for Halloween, so Troy and Abed roamed the streets with them.

“Yeah, I guess it is,” Troy scratched his head. Rasping, he continued. “Candy corn still looks like tiny traffic cones.”

“Sure does,” Abed replied in Batman’s voice. “Think any of the kids in the neighborhood want to go to candy traffic school?”

“Nah,” Troy shook his head. Normally, he continued, “my voice was getting a little rough there. Better save it up for the kids.”

“Alright,” Abed continued, not breaking character. That was fine; he usually didn’t, in costume. “You going to dress up?”

“Nah,” Troy said again.

“Cool. Cool cool cool.” It sounded different as Batman.

Troy and Abed made their way out into the streets, watching for the first kid to drop a candy basket. Then, Abed swooped in, arms gracefully catching the fallen goods. “There you are, Dorothy.”

The kid in the gingham dress and pigtails beamed, presenting the basket in her other arms full of stuffed animal dog. “And Toto,” Abed nodded.

“Thanks, Batman,” the kid replied. “Are you really Batman?”

The kid asked the question in a hushed whisper, and Troy couldn’t help cracking a smile as Abed said nothing, but he knew even without looking that he was smiling mysteriously behind the mask.

Abed swept back into the shadows and found him, and he and Troy padded quietly along the streets, waiting for the next minor candy emergency where Abed could step in and become Batman again.

“I’m kind of tired,” Troy told him when they made it home.

“Do you want to just hand out candy next year?” It meant a lot coming from Abed; he enjoyed this.

But Troy really did want a nice quiet year handing candy out at home. “Yeah. We can be Inspector Spacetime and Reggie.”

“Sure. That works.”

Troy flicked the light switch off, and waited a few beats before turning it back on again.

“Want to eat some of last year’s discount candy?” Abed was holding up a mostly empty bag Troy hadn’t realized had left the cabinet. If it had, he probably would have finished it already, so that was a good thing, since it meant they could enjoy the rest of it together before catching this year’s leftover grocery store bounty.

“Yeah.” Troy let his head fall onto Abed’s shoulder, resting on the Batman cape.

“Cool. Cool cool cool.”
