“Don’t stick your head out the window for too long, you’ll get a headache,”
“Pfft, I literally spent all of yesterday trying to explain to Connie how women can in fact not turn off their periods when they deem convenient, so trust me love, if I somehow didn’t get a headache from that, this won’t give me one either,”
“Connie isn’t ignorant! He’s just a bit… ,” Historia trailed off, unsure if she could find a word to describe Connie that would defend his smarts and yet also remain truthful.
Which to be honest was impossible
Ymir grinned sly to herself.
“I saw him once, with full confidence, put down George Washington as the answer to ‘Who was the most recent King of England?’ on a pop quiz,” Ymir replied turning her head back to Historia for a brief moment to see her reaction.
Historia simply muttered something about the unfair educational system and not needing that knowledge in the ‘real world’.
Ymir chuckled softly as she turned her attention back to the scenery that past them as they drove on. But she granted Historia’s wish and stuck her head back in the car, settling for simply turning her head at a 90 degree angle. Her arm rested lazily outside the window as she tapped the door of her green chevy truck. Ymir then popped in her new CD the quiet sounds of r&b guiding them on their travels.
She fondly remembered the brief battle they had that morning when she nearly doubled over when Historia declared she would be the one driving them to the beach in Ymir’s truck.
Historia had instantly planted her hands on her hips and donned her to-go argument expression. Ymir knew straight away she was in for an extensive back and forth of no, yes, no, yes.
Which normally always ended in Historia being victorious and today was no different. She instantly softened to something akin to butter being left out in the sun for too long once she had gotten her way. Swiping Ymir’s keys and planting a chaste kiss to her lips, Historia dashed out the door like a cat before any minds could be changed.
Although Ymir had fought valiantly for the drivers seat, anything that brought her girlfriend joy she knew she was unable to refuse it.
They had packed swiftly for their spontaneous trip. Among their packing was a blanket for them to share and Historia’s casette player that was a hand me down from her older sister Frieda.
Ymir was brewing chamomile tea for them while Historia made sandwiches.
At one point Ymir glanced over at Historia and had to suppress a grin.
Historia’s eyes were intense with focus, the tip of her pointed pink tongue ever so slightly jutting out.
Ymir felt as though she was trapped inside a cliche rom-com if something as simple as Historia making goddamn sandwiches made her heart swell with adoration.
The tub of butter had been left out in the sun and was melting into a golden syrup, most likely not fit to be used, but Historia persevered. Her thin long fingers delicately swiped the knife through the melting mess and onto the slices of bread.
Ymir’s eyes traveled from Historia’s handiwork and hands to her delicate complexion. Her eyes were transifixed on her soft flowing blonde locks. The sun adding emphasis to her highlights.
Golden.
“You good?” Historia enquired once she met Ymir’s gaze, one eyebrow cocking up.
Ymir cleared her throat. Jesus. They had been dating for years now. How is it possible Ymir is reduced to a blushing mess every single day still?
“Nothing, I’m- It’s nothing, just lost in thought is all,” Ymir replied, any attempt at appearing breezy obviously failing.
“Mhm,” Historia said, now suppressing her own smile.
Returing to the present, Ymir’s eyes traveled once again to Historias hair.
“You remind me a lot of butter,” Ymir stated suddenly.
“Excuse me?” Historia laughed in confusion.
“Well for starters your hair…” Ymir trailed off as she lightly ran two fingers downwards through Historia’s locks. She stopped at her nape and lightly circled it with a fingernail. Historia hummed softly, content with the brief show-casings of Ymir’s affection.
“And?” Historia encouraged her, raising her eyebrows.
“And you go with about anything, not too sweet and not too salty, the perfect sandwich topping might I add,” Ymir spoke with a proud grin.
“It’s true, butter wouldn’t melt in my mouth,” Historia smiled raising an eyebrow.
“Don’t put it in your mouth, that would be classified as cannibalism,”
“No, Ymir, you know the saying-,”
“Like, cause your basically butter-,”
“I was just referencing-“
“- that you would resort to cannibalism if deemed necessary,”
“Good job, you successfully ruined a perfectly tender moment,” Historia huffed, pulling her pastel green heart sunglasses to her eyes.
“You’re welcome babe,” Ymir chuckled, pulling her red squared sunglasses over eyes just as Historia had done.
“You’re impossible,”
“You’re able to deal with me,” Ymir commented flicking Historia’s shoulder.
“Yes, yes I am,” Historia breathed with a softer expression. Like butter.
Ymir just smiled and looked out the window again.

Two hours later the couple had finally made it to their destination. Due to the fact their house was in the very end of nowhere in the countryside, it made the journey very scenic but long.
The beach was an old thing. Historia had been coming to it since she was nine years old. Once Freida turned sixteen and was able to drive, she had swiped Historia’s green bucket and a small sun hat and of course Historia and brought her to the beach for the entire evening.
Historia’s favoured area of the beach was a small grassy patch with two convenient large stones, perfect for sitting on.
It placed you directly opposite of where the sun would set and that was exactly what Historia wanted tonight.
She bent her head back ever so slightly to feel the breeze and deep ocean air. Two seagulls flew past in the sky along with two butterflies, one black and one brown. The beach was completely empty.
There was a few clouds that idly scattered the pink-orange sky. But it was perfect, too perfect.
Two calloused hands suddenly wrapped themselves around her temples, covering her eyes and robbing her of sight and the beautiful scenery.
“Guess who babe,”
“Hm, well I only have one girlfriend…,” Historia hummed as she gingerly touched her fingertips to her lovers hands
“Damn right,” Ymir cackled, sitting herself on the stone beside Historia’s. Ymir then handed her one light-pink heart shaped lollipop with a grin. Popping her own red one into her mouth, she sighed happily, sliding down the rock to sit in-front of it.
Ymir looked up at Historia and patted the sand beside her.
“Nope,”
“Sit, c’mon,”
“Nope, i’m not getting my new jeans sandy,”
“I’ll wash them for you straight away when we get home, pinky swear,” Ymir pleaded, crossing an “x”over her heart while holding up her pinky finger.
“Ymir,” Historia vowed
“Historia,” Ymir answered in the same tone.
Historia didn’t budge and Ymir sighed. “Fine, I’ll do all your laundry tonight,”
“That’s more like it,” Historia quipped happily, sliding down the rock as she twisted her own pinky around Ymir’s.
“You’re such a spoiled bitch,” Ymir groaned throwing her lollipop stick away into the nearby trash.
“Thanks, I try,” Historia grinned slyly, throwing her own lollipop stick away.
“But I guess I only encourage it,” Ymir laughed, sliding her arm around Historia’s small shoulders.
“I guess that makes me your spoiled bitch,” Historia mumbled, nestled her head into Ymir’s neck.
She could feel the light chuckle in Ymir’s chest now she was so close.
“It’s not like I’m any easier,” Ymir chuckled.
“No, no you’re not,” Historia agreed.
Ymir just cackled more and the sound made Historia want to grab the nearest container and bottle the noise up forever. And if she ever needed cheering up, she would have Ymir’s own happiness to help her own.
She angled her chin to Ymir’s jaw and pressed a chaste kiss to it. Holding onto the hand that was draped around her shoulders as she did. Ymir clasped her hands like a vice, her mood instantly deepening into a more intense flavor now.
Historia trailed kisses up and down Ymir’s freckled bronze skin. Her vanilla lipgloss making everything that much more sweet and easy.
Ymir then pulled Historia up until she was securely placed on her lap. Allowing her to lightly trail fingers down the back of Historia’s white tank top. A queen on the rightful throne of her knights lap.
Historia still pursued Ymir’s neck. Her deepening ardour pressing her to add light bites which caused Ymir to sigh and exhale deeply.
Historia dropped her hands to the warm soft sand beside them now. Running her hands through its soft feel.
After she was satisfied with the light marks left on Ymir’s neck, all being hers, she pursued her mouth, Ymir was equally enthusiastic.
“I know what you remind me of now,” Historia sighed against Ymir’s lips.
“Hm?” Ymir mumbled, squeezing Historia’s thigh lightly.
“Sand,”
“Pfft, butter and sand, we’re quite the combination,” Ymir smirked.
“Yes we are,” Historia agreed.
“And why, may I ask, do I remind you of sand?”
“You’re incredibly warm, once you’re on my skin I can never seem to get you off but you’re always soft to touch,” Historia smiled, suddenly shy as she lowered her gaze down.
Ymir of course followed with tipping Historia’s chin up with her index and thumb. Looking directly into the endless sky that was Historia’s gaze. Once again she felt herself unworthy of such tender yet strong attention.
Historia was equally bound to Ymir’s attention and gaze. Her brown eyes a burning fire of their own, with yellow and orange flecks towards the pupils. Dark freckles were always Historia’s favourite part which also meant that summer was her favourite season as it just made them more prominent.
The intimate silence instantaneously ended when the two simultaneously blurted “I love you,”
Historia giggled while Ymir pressed her mouth into an amused line.
“Jinx, you owe me ten dollars,”
“Ymir! if you interrupt a perfectly intimate moment again I swear to God,” Historia squeaked, lightly smacking Ymir’s shoulder.
Ymir cackled and threw her head back while Historia pouted. Ymir just brushed her cheek with a thumb. “Sorry babe, I can’t help it when I get to see your face like this everytime,”
Historia just huffed. She turned her head back towards the sea. The sun had nearly dipped completely beyond the horizon and the tide was quickly coming in. She instantly brightened at her idea.
Jumping up and tugging off her black and white vans and socks as she smiled at Ymir’s questioning expression.
“Cmon love, the tides nearly out,” Historia whispered and held out her hand.
Ymir instantly knew and kicked off her white trainers.
“Wait,” Ymir said before Historia could run off. She knelt in-front of Historia and rolled up her pants legs.
Historia didn’t know why this simple task hit her so deeply. But it felt laced with Ymir affection and intimacy. She had to turn her face away straight away, as she mumbled her thanks, to hide her pink face.
Ymir grabbed Historia’s hand and the two ran across the beach, sand flicking as they made their way into the water, making sure to stay where it was shallow enough.
Ymir placed one arm behind her back and extended a hand towards Historia and bowed. “May I have this dance,” She asked.
Historia giggled and played along, curtseying and holding her hands out as though she was wearing a dress. “You may,”
They waltzed through the sea, water splashing and lapping at their ankles as Ymir hummed something along the lines of Once Upon a Dream.
The sunlight glittered the sea with an orange light and the features danced equally beautifully on their features. They might as well have been under the glimmering lights of a ballroom.
“You look beautiful,” Historia whispered, cupping Ymir’s cheek.
“So do you,” Ymir whispered back.
Smiling, smiling, smiling.
Ymir then grabbed Historia up by her torso and swung her gracefully around until she was securely holding her up. Historia laughed in delight, wrapping her legs around Ymirs torso and her arms around her neck.
The two simply swayed like this, prolonging the moment, neither party ever, ever wanting to let go.
“I am fucking starving,” Ymir blurted.
“YMIR WHAT DID I SAY-,”
“I’M SORRY BUT I’M SO HUNGRY,”
“Cmon, let’s get the sandwiches in the truck,” Historia sighed, dragging Ymir by her hand back to the shore.
“You’re a goddess,” Ymir said, kissing her girlfriends hand.
****
Once the sandwiches had been digested the sun had long but dipped beyond the sea. The sky was its perfect summer colour of dark blue and small stars twinkled across the sky.
The blanket was now draped across both their shoulders as they sipped the chamomile tea from their flasks, theyre fingers wrapped around them as though it was the dead of winter and not the middel of summer.
Historia had brought out Frieda’s cassette player which crackled out some old indie song. Ymir was content to press light kisses to Historia’s forehead and listen to the music in silence. Historia couldn’t ask for a better place to be.
“Damn, no words to ruin the moment now aye,” Historia asked Ymir with a grin.
“Nope, none at all, and I wouldn’t want to either,”
Historia looked up into Ymir’s eyes, full to the brim with love and wonder. She simply smiled and
pressed her lips to her lover’s waiting mouth.
