Work Text:

Kaworu had decided to take Shinji out on a date. Shinji wasn't too keen on the idea. He'd much rather stay in, but Kaworu insisted on ‘treating’ Shinji to a proper date. Kaworu had gotten the idea from a movie. Misato had teased Shinji when she found him trying to look as best as possible, Asuka just called him stupid.

Now they were at a western restaurant to get lunch. Kaworu had chosen the restaurant and insisted he'd pay; so Shinji was looking for something cheap. He doesn't like gifts. They just make him feel like they're in debt with the other.

It was fairly quiet, as it was 12 in the afternoon on a weekday. There were only a handful of people including the boys. The lights are soft, and the restaurant is warm. It's a rather welcoming atmosphere.

“So, what will you be ordering?” Kaworu questions in his usual smooth voice, as he sets down his menu, his red eyes staring at Shinji intently.

“Hm just a milkshake” Shinji replies as they refuse to hold eye contact with Kaworu. Eye contact always made him uncomfortable. It felt too intimate in a way, people's eyes were the biggest indicator of how they're feeling, or what they're thinking.

“Oh well, why don't we share one then.” Kaworu insists. He has a smile on his face. Is that a real thing people do or is that just in the movies? Kaworu seemed to believe movie romance was realistic.

Shinji finds himself looking around the diner, in an attempt to avoid the intense stare Kaworu was sending his way. The decor was quite over the top with the western theme. There's many American flags and the menu was full of greasy burgers. It was rather gimmicky, well I guess that's the entire point.

Then a blonde tall waitress walks over with a fake smile plastered on her pretty face. She seems tired like her shift is close to ending. Shinji can't help but find her incredibly attractive. Maybe he shouldn't be thinking that while on a date with his boyfriend..

“Hi, I'll be your server today! What can I get you?” her voice is very forcefully happy, almost as if she'll get in trouble if the happy facade breaks. Eh makes sense she is working in customer service.

Kaworu returns the smile. “just a strawberry milkshake.” His voice is full of its usual coolness.

Strawberry is Shinji's favourite flavour. They don't know if he's told Kaworu or if it was a lucky guess from their partner. Either way it was rather sweet. Not many people cared to remember small things like that.

The waitress gives a small smile before walking off presumably to put in their order. Shinji is a little confused why Kaworu didn't order anything, he was the one who proposed the idea of getting lunch, so not getting anything makes no sense. Kaworu was kinda weird like that.

“Strawberry is your favourite, correct?” Kaworu questions, he sounds confident in himself, as if he knows the answer and is just asking for the sake of making conversation.

Shinji gives a small nod in return, their cheeks have a light pink dusted over them. Kaworu has always had that effect on Shinji. They'd often find themselves blushing uncontrollably if Kaworu was around. Even before they were dating.

Kaworu was just so…perfect, he was like an angel, well not the ones they'd kill in the Evas, but more so the beautiful, and perfect beings you'd see in fiction. He was inhumanly perfect.

“How are Asuka and Misato?” Kaworu asks, breaking Shinji out of their thoughts.

Shinji hadn't really been talking to either of them. He'd go home then go to bed only leaving occasionally for food, water, or to use the bathroom.

“Hm they're okay..Asuka is her usual self.” Shinji responds looking down at his hands. “Same for Misato, she's still always drinking” They trail off at the end of the sentence. He doesn't want to talk about himself or his life too much. It's rude!

Shinji looks up at the boy across from themself. Kaworu has a small smirk on his face as he listens to Shinji's uncertain quiet voice.

After a few more minutes of the boys talking the pretty waitress from earlier comes over holding a strawberry milkshake in a pretty clear glass topped with whipped cream, and sprinkles There's 2 straws in the drink, one on either side, perfect for sharing.

The waitress sets the drink down between the pair with a small knowing smile on her face. Shinji looks at the drink between themself and their partner.

It's an unnatural pink, but it looks yummy. Shinji is much too scared to take the first sip, they decide to wait for Kaworu to take the first sip.

After a few seconds Kaworu leans in ever so slightly, taking one of the straws between his lips and taking a sip. Only then does Shinji do the same.

They look like those couples in cheesy romcoms sharing a milkshake. Shinji is a little embarrassed at the moment. He doesn't like showing affection in public, but it's making Kaworu happy, so he’ll deal.

The milkshake is very sweet, it has an artificial strawberry flavour, that probably also caused the bright colour. Shinji quite enjoys the sweetness even if it's almost grossly sweet.

Shinji looks into Kaworu's big red eyes trying to decipher how the other was feeling. Shinji doesn't want to make their partner upset. There's not anything that'd make Kaworu upset going on, but of course Shinji being Shinji is still worrying about the possibility.

“How do you like it?” Kaworu asks as he takes his lips away from the straw leaning back into a straight posture

Shinji follows the action although his posture is horrible so their back isn't nearly as straight as Kaworu's.

“Oh its yum.” Shinji quietly responds as he takes another sip. “why didn't you get any food?” they ask’ their voice is small, almost like he's scared of being heard.

Kaworu doesn't respond, he just gives a gentle, and charismatic smile. The smile brings a light blush to Shinji's cheeks and causes the butterflies in his stomach to swarm around. Their question slipped from their mind.

“You're very handsome ,Shinji” Kaworu states. His voice is smooth, and charismatic. He always compliments Shinji.. In this specific way. Like its a known fact hes stating

Shinji has never really been called handsome, the closest he's ever really gotten was Misato calling him cute. They don't understand how to react to the compliment. He can feel the blush on his cheeks intensifying a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
