Work Text:
Intruder R.
Intruder T.
Hacker N.
Hacker E.
The codenames for the operation were fairly simple. If not a bit of a give away.
"N. Is the code ready yet?" Rui spoke through the microphone hidden by his ear.
"Not quite," Nene responded. "Me and E are working on it. The security is quite good."
"Makes sense," Tsukasa said into his mic, "Since it is the government building and all."
"Observer R is watching." Rui put his hands into his pockets. "We need to succeed in this mission for her."
"This is the biggest mission yet, I think." Tsukasa's head tilted. "What does Observer R need the information for?"
Rui shrugged. "Not sure." He lifted up the black mask, and nodded towards Tsukasa to try and get him to do the same. "We're almost there."
Tsukasa lifted up his mask. "Right."
Rui turned back on his mic. "You finished yet, N?"
"Almost!" Emu was the one to respond. "N is working super duper hard to get that passcode!"
Rui raised an eyebrow. "And you are...?"
"Emotional support!"
Rui sighed. "Got it."
He looked down at his phone, seeing a notification from Nene. "1983." He shoved his phone back into his pocket. "Pretty basic..." He muttered to himself.
Tsukasa walked slightly ahead of Rui, to the front of the government building. "Our first mission as a couple. How does that sound?"
Rui smiled, even though it wasn't visible from beneath the mask. "Feels pretty good. I'll take you for milkshakes when we get back."
Rui inputted the code, and walked into the building.
There was a hallway before the true entrance, without security cameras. Rui reached for the watch as his wrist, turning it. In the blink of an eye, he turned into one of the government employees. One that he knew wasn't here yet.
Tsukasa did the same.
The two of them opened the final door into the building.
They just needed to send Rin the computer information. Rui messed with the USB stick in his pocket. The way he would steal information and send it to Rin.
Tsukasa stood a little straighter, remembering the practice he had before the mission on how the employee acted. Confident. Cool. Not screaming.
Rui glanced at Tsukasa. He was a natural at this. He was too, he supposed.
A few over employees walked past them. Nothing suspicious. Rui grabbed some keys from the janitor's pocket. The ring contained the keys to the room they needed, just as Rui had hoped.
A few minutes later, and they reached the final door they needed.
Rui chuckled. "Too easy..." He turned the keys, and him and Tsukasa entered the room.
"Empty." Tsukasa noted. Perfect for the task at hand.
Rui walked over to the computer sitting on the desk. He entered the USB stick, and waited for the information to copy.
He sat down in the chair. Tsukasa took a step towards Rui, smiling. "I'd call this mission a success."
Rui shook his head. "Not yet. We could still get caught."
"Yeaaaaah, good point." Tsukasa placed a hand on his boyfriend's shoulder. "But we probably won't though."
Rui stared at the screen. "Remain on guard, T."
100% complete. Rui stood up. "Let's g-"
Suddenly, alarms sounded in the building. A red light scanned the room, and both Rui and Tsukasa's watches stopped working, turning them back into their regular form.
"Shit." Rui yanked the USB from the computer, hastily shoving it into his pocket, this time the one on his pants.
The door opened, and one of the government officials, Hakamoto, walked into the room. His expression hardened when he saw Rui and Tsukasa.
"You were careful, I admit," He snapped his fingers, and two guards appeared beside him. "But not careful enough. We tracked the signals of your little transformation watches."
One of the guards pulled out a gun. Hatamoto took a step back. "Kill the Tenma. Keep Kamishiro alive for questioning."
With that, he stepped out of the room.
Time seemed to go in a blur. Rui saw a laser bullet fly out of the gun, straight to Tsukasa. He didn't think.
He shoved Tsukasa out of the way. The laser shot right through his stomach, and he fell to the floor.
"Tsukasa..." He clutched at his stomach with one hand, and handed Tsukasa the USB with the other. "Take this and run. Don't let them catch you."
A small yelp of pain came from Rui's lips. "I love you."
Tsukasa's fingers wrapped around the USB as the whole in Rui's stomach grew bigger. And bigger. Damn effects of the laser.
Tsukasa nodded. "I love you too."
There wasn't much time to say goodbye. The guards, having killed Rui, focused their attention on capturing Tsukasa instead.
That meant they couldn't use their guns.
Tsukasa ran as fast as he could out of the room. Out of the building.
Into the open. The crowd was large, thankfully. He sprinted through it, USB in hand.
He knew the guards were running after him. He looked behind him, and saw the guards questioning someone in the crowd who, by some miracle, hadn't seen him.
Tsukasa dashed down an alleyway. Lots of turns. He lowered his mask, trying to get more air in. He was getting exhausted already.
Turn. After turn. After turn. He always glanced behind him. He had lost the guards.
But he had also lost Rui.
He finally made it to the headquarters. He entered the password, and entered in.
Emu, Nene, and Rin were all sitting together, chatting away happily. Tsukasa handed Rin the USB. "We...got it..." He managed to say in-between gasps for air.
Rin smiled. "Thanks, T!" She looked around him. "Where's R?"
Tsukasa paused. "He..."
He sighed, looking away. "He didn't make it. Got shot by one of the lasers..."
Emu gasped. Nene froze. Rin's smile dropped.
"But...but he was our best intruder!" Emu stood up. "There's no way-"
Tsukasa began to walk to his quarters. "I'll be in my room. Don't bother me."
He locked the door behind him.
Tsukasa looked at the picture of him and the rest of the team on his nightstand. Tsukasa had his arm around Rui's shoulders.
The events finally fully hit him in that moment.
Rui was gone. Forever.
