Work Text:
Loving hands reaching out and touching Daisy’s face. It was bliss. She sighed in contentment from the touch and found herself unintentionally leaning into it only to then yank back as if the hands were made of fire. “S - sorry,” she stuttered, embarrassed. “I wasn’t expecting you to do that, Pompom.” It was easy sliding back into her confident, goofy persona. “Is gently caressing my bunny cheeks part of the makeup process or were you trying to cop a feel? That’s so sneaky when I nicely asked for your help instead of conjuring it onto my face by myself.”
“You are impossible!” It was Pomni’s turn to be flustered, looking down at her own gloved hands. She hasn’t meant to do that; it just happened! She was so proud of her work and how pretty her friend looked that she got caught up in the moment. Gulping nervously, she glanced over at the discarded eyeshadow palette on the bed. “We’re done either way. Go on, take a look.” She passed a handheld mirror over to Daisy with an encouraging smile, faltering when her offering wasn’t accepted outright. “Daisy? What’s wrong?”
The rabbit looked in her own head as she blinked a few times as if coming back from a faraway place, a strangely-vulnerable expression making its way across her painted features. She had been so much more docile since her abstraction. “I’m not sure,” she admitted freely. “I just…I want you to do it for me.” She pushed the mirror back towards Pomni’s chest. “I’m closing my eyes.”
Do it for her? She slowly understood what that meant and nodded mostly to herself, holding the mirror up to her own face for a moment. Her permanently-red cheeks had an additional soft pink hue spread across them and her invisible nose at the sight of Daisy looking so patient and trusting, something she was trying to will away before it was spotted. She turned it around so it faced the proper target, a pink bow being added on one of her long ears as an afterthought. “Open your eyes whenever you’re ready.”
"Okay.” Daisy could feel her heart thumping hard in her chest, the beat steadily climbing until it resonated within her throat instead. Was that why it felt so lumpy and she couldn’t get any words out? Her breathing sped up out of control inside her head when in reality it was impossible to tell for sure over the roaring of the blood in her ears. Her eyes flew open, and there she was. Fuck, she looked beautiful. Winged eyeliner reminiscent of a softball game, hot pink eyeshadow, soft blush, and a pale pink lipstick thar stood out against the purple. “You made me look beautiful,” she gasped, all her walls crashing down.
“You already were beautiful,” Pomni argued, “I just brought it out a little more. I’m really glad you’re happy with the result!" She held up a finger to stop any further questions and squeezed her eyes shut, concentrating on the visual of what she wanted to conjure. When she looked again, a pale pink dress matching the lipstick had spawned on Daisy's body that she was now gaping at. "There! I thought you needed a little something extra to go with your new look!" As she continued to get nothing in response verbally her smile slowly dimmed, then it disappeared completely. "Daisy? I'm sorry, did I overstep? I should've asked before I changed the whole outfit on your body." She froze up from the embrace she was suddenly pulled into and welcomed the unfamiliar feeling of physical touch, warmth flooding through her form. She hugged back, her arms wrapping around Daisy's lanky form and careful not to wrinkle the new dress.
Sighing, she resisted the urge to nuzzle into Pomni's shoulder and smudge her hard work. "Thanks for coming back for me and picking me up when I was down," she whispered. It had been a week since she was pulled from the darkness and still she thanked her savior every single day for putting her life on the line to save her. Maybe she still didn't think she was worth saving but it was a slow, uphill climb getting to that point. "Pomni?" She spoke her name gently, a prayer.
"Yes?" she replied.
"I want to tell the others. Show them." Daisy expected to panic at the thought once again as she always had before but all she felt was a sense of calm washing over her. It was, once again, bliss. "I want to come out to everyone." Her eyes were closed as she hummed, finally feeling at peace for the first time she could remember. Was it really the first time in her life and was this really what it felt like? "You'll be there, right? Like you were when...when you dragged me back?" She raised a hesitant hand to reach out, changing her mind halfway and thinking of words to say that would get her out of the current situation.
Pomni grabbed her hand suddenly, bared from the usual yellow glove and probably cartoonishly smooth. Or furred? She had the urge to take off her white gloves to learn before shaking her head. Now wasn't the time. "No matter what happens, you know that I will always be right here by your side. I want to, and you are wanted. You are loved so much and appreciated." She was hoping the makeup was waterproof since Daisy was tearing up out of joy with each word that flowed past her lips. "Don't hide your face from me," she cooed as her free hand twitched towards it. "Let me keep looking at you."
She laughed, a genuine laugh that wasn't mocking or bitter. "Come on! I know I'm total eye candy when I look like this, but we need to save some for the rest of the circus! I can't wait to see their reactions when they take in how I look!" One would think she was resorting to masking herself again, but someone truly attuned to people and how they ticked would know she was excited.
"Let's go, friend." She squeezed her hand comfortingly and opened the door, glancing at the rabbit. Her rosy chest sucked in as she inhaled with purpose, exhaling as they both took their first step out into the hallway. Everything was going to be okay and Pomni made it clear Daisy was well and truly loved whether she wanted to be or not.
