Work Text:

Sonic's shoes thudded against the grass as he weaved between trees. He had always loved taking a run through this particular forest, it was quiet, yes, but still interesting enough to explore and map out. However on this day Sonic was not exploring. Today, there was no grand adventure to save the world, and yet he's never been as nervous as he felt at this moment, for today was his date with Amy Rose. They were going to have a picnic in a flower field within this forest. He had been the one to actually suggest the date.

He clutched his hand a little tighter around the rose he had impulsively grabbed before coming here. He has no idea what he's doing, he was the one who asked Amy out on this date after weeks and weeks of Tails and Knuckles hyping him up but even he has to admit he is horribly out of his element… This was not only his first date with Amy, but it had been his first date ever. Before this, he had no particular interest in dating. No one was ever willing to keep up with him. Others would tend to put him into a box of what he was supposed to do, how to do it, how he had been meant to behave, never allowing him to explore romance at his own pace.

Maybe that was why he felt so differently towards Amy. She was always willing to follow him, regardless of how long it took him to get to the point where he was finally prepared to try. She liked him for him, not some idealized version of himself that he would struggle to live up to. She allowed him to breathe, and to not feel pressured, and-

THUNK

Sonic was so lost in thought he didn't even notice the large tree root jutting out from the forest floor, in less than a second sonic went from running to flying through the greenery as his foot snagged on the branch…

“Woah!” He really should be paying more attention right now but so many thoughts are flying through his head.

He brings the rose closer to his chest as he rolls up into a ball, crashing back onto the ground and rolling through the forest at high speed. He berates himself, just hoping the rose isn't damaged too much by his antics.

Unceremoniously, he rolls to a stop as he flops out the drop dash onto the dirt, rose still in hand, hesitantly peeking up at it, fearing that it might have been destroyed.

The rose stares back at him…

Somehow perfectly intact.

He takes a big sigh of relief.

“That was too close…” Sonic gets to his feet and dust himself off.

Sonic froze as he looked forward. Ahead of him lies a large field of pristine white flowers, the cool breeze gently stirring towards the sunlight, and in the middle of the field one lone pink hedgehog sat upon a picnic blanket with her basket in hand, patiently waiting.

Waiting for him.

Sonic takes in a deep breath and steadies himself. “I got this, I can do this.”

He takes a step into the field, the gentle breeze rustles through his quills as he pensively walks towards her, the breeze combined with his nerves sending a chill down his spine. Or maybe it’s just her? He didn’t know.

Amy Rose was gently rolling one of the white flowers between her finger tips, looking up to Sonic as he approached. Sonic can't help but to stare at the way the sun reflects off of her emerald eyes. His stomach felt as though it had more butterflies than this field.
“Hey Ames! Hope I didn't make you wait too long! Heh…” Sonic smiles as he nervously scratches the back of his head, trying to break any of the tension he had been carrying with him the entire venture. He had to relax.

“SONIC!” Amy's entire face lights up as she sees him. “You made it!” She says as she pats the empty space on the blanket next to her, she had seemingly kept it very tidy.

“Of course! Wouldn't miss it for anything!” Sonic sits down, taking another deep breath and unabashedly holding out the rose towards her, looking away, bringing his other hand up to his face and lightly scratching his nose. “This is… Heh, this is for you… Hope ya like it, I know it’s a bit on the nose…”

Amy gently takes the rose from him, eyes widening ever so slightly as a blush grazes her cheeks. “Oh Sonic, thank you!” She sticks the rose into her quills. “On the nose, huh?” She pointed at his hand that had still been rubbing his nose. Red rose onto his cheeks after being called out on his nervous tick… He supposed he walked into that one. She seemed proud of herself though, so he was willing to take a little embarrassment.

After that, the two hedgehogs sat there in silence, neither one knowing how to start the date. The only sound that could be heard is the faint sound of the wind whistling through the field.

Amy suddenly broke the silence by reaching forward and grabbing the picnic basket, tearing it open and grabbing a blue frosted cookie… Upon further inspection, he couldn’t help but notice it had a striking resemblance to his own quill color.

Amy holds the cookie up to his face. “H-Here Sonic, you really should try it, it’s really good!” She sheepishly averted her gaze with a slight blush. “I made them for you… They’re my favorite color.” She whispered that last part under her breath, but he definitely could not mistake what he heard. His ears felt hot. This girl…
Sonic blinked. The atmosphere suddenly changed. Guess Amy finally got tired of him making the first move. Sonic chuckles at this thought, Ames always was a bit stubborn, but he couldn’t help but find it endearing. Cute, even. He leaned forward, taking a small bite of the cookie.

Sonic’s eyes lit up, “Hey, these are delicious!” He scarfed down the rest of the cookie lighting fast, his mouth gently making contact with her hand in a way that made Amy’s breath catch in her throat.

Amy choked out a giggle now that the ice has been broken, and slightly to save face. “I-I'm glad! Here, I made a TON more…!” She handed Sonic all sorts of baked goods and confections, all made with her love.

As the date continues on, Amy and Sonic talk about anything and everything, simply enjoying each other's company. By the time either realized how much time had passed, the sun was already beginning to set, painting the sky in pink and orange hues. The two hedgehogs stare up into the sky together.

Sonic looks back down at Amy, “This was great Ames, thanks for bringing the food!” He caught himself with how dense he sounded just saying that. “A-and for even showing up! Heh…” Nice save, hero.

Amy looks up, giving him a gentle, but knowing smile with a hint of mischief, “Of course Sonic! Thank you for asking me on this date!” She gently poked him in the chest as she exaggerated the word ‘date’, he blushed and chuckled nervously. He supposed neither of them had properly said the word out loud until now, and he nodded. She seemed satisfied now that he truly acknowledged it, this is a date. She kicked her feet lightly with excitement and he couldn’t help but laugh. The wind kicked up a bit, sending white petals everywhere. “I had an amazing time!” She said, gently brushing petals off her quills and her dress.
Sonic stares, all he can think of at this moment is how stunning Amy looks, he gulps as he once again steals his nerves for what he wants to do… What he's about to do. Sonic leans forward gently resting his hands against Amy's face as he closes his eyes. One of his hands gently led her chin towards his. Amy's eyes widen as she realizes what's happening, a quick, short gasp escaping through her parted lips, but quickly follows suit as she reaches to close the gap. Their lips get closer and closer, they can feel each other's breath on their lips as they close in… And then…

A loud song suddenly cuts through the silence causing Amy and Sonic to jump back in surprise at the intrusion, Amy clearing her throat, “Hehe! Sorry about that, let me just-” She rips her phone out from the basket and accepts the call, hissing into it with braced teeth, “What do you want?!” She quickly brought the phone up to her ears and gave Sonic a sheepish wave, him hesitantly smiling back and giving her an equally awkward wave in return.

Tails' voice can be heard coming through the phone. “Hi! Um, sorry for interrupting you and Sonic on your date, but-” A loud explosion can be heard over the phone, causing him to yelp. “Eggman’s up to something here, and we need your help! Um, please!” The young fox screams out over the explosion before hanging up the phone. Poor thing seemed more scared of Amy than the mastermind himself.

The pair of hedgehogs stare at the phone in silence, sonic eventually clearing his throat, standing up to his feet and offering her his hand, once again scratching his nose with the other. “Well, whaddya say, Ames?” He winks, “Wanna go scramble some eggs together?” He smirks, proud of how painfully cheesy he had been.

Amy stares at the hand in front of her, letting out an exasperated sigh at the loss of what could have happened, but she could not help but laugh at how corny Sonic sounded. He always knew how to brighten a space. She chuckled to herself as she took Sonic’s hand, her smile lighting up her face. "If it's with you? Well, then of course!” She let out a small squeak as Sonic quickly pulled her into a princess carry, Amy bracing onto him tightly.

“What are we waiting for then? Let's go!” The two of them laugh as Sonic runs out of the field, running towards many more adventures, together.
