Chapter Text
“Whatcha thinkin’ about?” Sam plops down on her bed next to Leah, leaning on her shoulder.
“Eh, nothing really. Debating doing the GP next month.”
“Oh, do it! It’d be fun.”
“Sam, I don’t know the meta. I don’t know what I’d play. And I’m absolutely not smart enough to figure all that out in less than a month.”
Sam boops her girlfriend on her nose. “A, you are smart enough to figure it out, stop being mean to my girlfriend. And, B, even if you weren’t, that’s what you have me for.”
“Sam, I’m not gonna make you deckbuild for me. Especially not for something that has actual stakes.”
“What if I offered?”
“Like you’re currently offering? Doesn’t solve the ‘what am I even playing’ problem.”
“What if I solved that too?”
“I mean, I guess… wait, what do you mean. Sam, what are you—”
“DAD!” At some point in the past few seconds Sam has bounded to the door and leaned out to call down the stairs.
“…yes?” Grant calls back.
“I need to borrow some expensive cards!”
“…why?”
“I’m making Leah play Lantern Control at the GP!”
“Take whatever you need!” Leah swears she hears a laugh coming from downstairs. Sam turns back, grinning ear to ear. Oh god. That’s never good. “Opals are probably top right drawer!”
“Thanks Dad, love you!”
“Love you too!”
Leah stares in bewilderment. “Sam, what the fuck are you doing?”
Sam takes her girlfriend’s hands in hers and stares sweetly into her eyes. “Oh, Leah, darling.” A wicked grin creeps across her face. “You’re either going to despise this deck or love it. Actually, you’re going to despise it, and then you’re going to love it. Have you ever considered that the goal of a game isn’t necessarily to defeat your opponent, but instead to make them no longer capable of playing the game?”
Leah looks at her like she has three heads. “Babe, those are two ways of saying the same thing.”
Somehow, Sam’s grin grows wider. “Oh, you sweet summer child…” Sam laughs. “I can’t wait for you to see how wrong you are.”
And she’s off, headed over to Grant’s office. Should I be worried? …I should probably be worried.
