Work Text:

“How do I look?” Aziraphale asked, looking anxious. She hardly ever wore makeup but tonight she had a date with an alpha who asked her out at work. Some asshole called Gabriel.

Crowley’s heart ached. How was she supposed to answer the question when Aziraphale had been beautiful to her since they were children? The mascara and the eyeshadow made her eyes pop and her new lipstick made Crowley’s gaze dip down to her mouth even more often than normally, but she was always so beautiful.

They first met in the park that separated their neighborhoods. Aziraphale had lived on the nice side and Crowley’s had been a rough one. Nobody could have guessed back then they’d grow to be best friends, least of all their respective families, but these days they were inseparable. Just two omega best friends spending most of their free time together.

If Crowley would’ve liked more from their friendship, that was no one else’s business. She was happy to have Aziraphale in his life however she could.

“I don’t think you need the makeup, angel. What is it about the alpha that makes you go into all this effort for him?” Crowley asked, purposefully avoiding the question.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been on a date,” Aziraphale said. “I just would like to look nice when someone shows interest towards me.”

Crowley pressed her nails into her palms and stopped herself from saying what she was thinking. The last thing she wanted was to make Aziraphale uncomfortable.

“You should look like yourself,” Crowley said. “You like what you look like! If the alpha really likes you, they’ll like what you look like too, no matter what.”

“I wish it could be that easy,” Aziraphale sighed.

“It should be!” Crowley insisted. “You’re perfect as you are, angel. The most beautiful person I’ve ever seen.”

There was a silence during which Crowley wished she hadn’t said anything.

“Crowley?” Aziraphale asked. “What do you mean?”

Fuck it. The cat was out of the bag now. Whatever she said to try to conceal the truth would only make the situation worse.

“Can we just pretend I didn’t say anything and you didn’t hear it?” Crowley tried, giving the angel a pleading look.

“No. I need to hear what you meant.”

Drawing a deep breath, Crowley closed her eyes to collect herself.

“I like you,” Crowley admitted. “Fuck. I’m getting this wrong. Of course I like you. We’re friends, aren’t we? People do like their friends. Obviously. That’s not the point I’m trying to make.”

“Crowley,” Aziraphale said, taking a step closer to Crowley. “Breathe deep and calm down. Are you saying—What you’re trying to say is you… are interested in me romantically? Is that right?”

“Shit. Yeah. That’s what I’m trying to say,” Crowley shrugged. “I get it you don’t feel the same. Can we just forget we ever had this conversation?”

Clearly Aziraphale had no intention of doing that. Infuriating, stubborn, enchanting angel.

“For how long?”

“I don’t know,” Crowley threw her hands in the air. “Ever since I knew what a crush was? Longer? I can’t remember a time when I didn’t feel like this. You were so protective of the other kids, even when alphas twice your size tried to bully them and I just. You were so beautiful. You still are. Fuck. Can we move on from this topic already?”

“Crowley, why do you think I wouldn’t feel the same?”

“Because you only ever date alphas. I’ve never seen you show interest in another omega.”

“My dear, I never approach those alphas either. I go on dates sometimes, but the relationships never last,” Aziraphale said. “I find you beautiful too.”

“You don’t mean it in the same way I do.”

“Oh, don’t I?”

The next moment Aziraphale had moved into Crowley’s personal space and cupped her cheek. She seemed to take Crowley opening her mouth in awe as permission to kiss her. It was like Crowley had always imagined. Soft but intense. Aziraphale’s scent, normally sweet and gentle, had a sharp note of something that smelled almost like lust.

“Fuck,” Aziraphale said as soon as she pulled back. “Give me just a minute.”

“What?” Crowley asked, scared that Aziraphale already regretted what she had done.

Aziraphale pulled out her phone and typed something.

“I just cancelled my date,” Aziraphale said. “Turns out my evening is free. Would you like to go on a date with me instead?”

“Yeah. I would love that, angel.”
