Penknife in the Baby's Heart (2006)

Summary:

18 August 2006, Gilbert residence, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

Emma is bustling about, trying to arrange her dad's birthday party when Cleo and Rikki show up

Work Text:

The pristine, sun-drenched kitchen of the Gilbert residence smells faintly of vanilla fondant and high-strung panic. Emma is a blur of motion, her hands flying across the marble countertop as she rearranges a platter of miniature quiches for what feels like the fourteenth time. Neil’s 50th birthday party is exactly four hours away, and in Emma’s mind, the entire social standing of the Gilbert family rests on the perfect alignment of these pastries.

"Elliot, I swear to God, take those down right now!" Emma snaps, her voice hitting a shrill pitch that makes her younger brother drop his ball pump.

Elliot stands on a dining chair, defiantly tying another pitch-black latex balloon to the curtain rod. "It’s an 'Over the Hill' theme, Em! It’s supposed to be funny!"

"It looks like a funeral for a goth band," Emma shoots back, her eyes flashing with that familiar, icy authority. "Dad is turning fifty, not entering the afterlife. Replace them with the gold and white ones now, or I’m confiscating your skateboard."

Before Elliot can mount a proper pre-teen defense, the screen door slides open with a gentle click. Cleo and Rikki wander in, carrying a box of silver streamers. The contrast between the atmosphere inside the house and the bright, carefree Gold Coast sun outside is staggering.

Cleo stops dead in her tracks, blinking at the tense tableau. "Uh, is everything okay? We brought the—"

"No, nothing is okay," Emma interrupts, not even looking up as she aggressively polishes a silver cake server with a tea towel. "The caterer forgot the smoked salmon pinwheels, Elliot is trying to curse the living room, and the ice sculptures are going to melt if the air conditioning doesn't kick in soon."

Rikki leans against the doorframe, crossing her arms. She shifts her weight, her blue eyes tracking Emma’s frantic, rigid movements. A familiar prickle of annoyance ripples through her. Emma in 'control-freak mode' always rubs Rikki the wrong way—it’s too loud, too structured, too completely opposite to how Rikki handles, well, anything in her life. It’s a fussiness that feels like a personal challenge, a tight coil of energy that Rikki desperately wants to unwind.

Stepping deeper into the room, Rikki ignores Emma's manic polishing and walks right up to the cluster of dark decorations Elliot has managed to string up. She tilts her head back, studying the glossy, obsidian spheres bouncing gently against the ceiling. A slow, trademark smirk spreads across Rikki's face. She glances over her shoulder at Emma, her tone dripping with dry, effortless amusement.

"Welcome to my Gothic world," Rikki says, gesturing toward the balloons with a lazy wave of her hand. "Honestly, Gilbert, I didn't know you had it in you. It's a vibe."

Emma freezes mid-polish. Her immediate, uptight instinct is to scoff, to lecture Rikki on the sanctity of formal color schemes, and to reiterate just how unacceptable the decorations are. A sharp comeback hovers right on the tip of her tongue. But as she looks over, her gaze lands squarely on Rikki's smirking face. The teasing warmth in Rikki’s eyes catches her entirely off guard, sending a sudden, frustrating flutter through Emma's chest. She feels her cheeks flush, and she quickly looks away, huffing as she grips the tea towel a little tighter to hide her fluster.

"Shut up, Rikki. It is not a vibe," Emma mutters, her voice a mix of exasperation and a strangely defensive sweetness.

She tries to maintain her rigid posture, but her mind completely betrays her, suddenly drifting to a wildly out-of-character thought. For a split second, looking at Rikki, Emma actually wonders what she would look like with a single, rebellious streak of black dyed right into her own perfect blonde hair—and whether it would finally make Rikki look at her without that mocking smile.

Horrified by her own train of thought, Emma quickly shakes her head. "And for the record, I am not going goth," she adds quickly, perhaps a bit too loudly, as she turns back to the quiches.
