Spare Air Conditioning Parts

Summary:

Deadlock escaped to her nearly freezing room after Raze broke the air conditioner and she almost overheated — so what the hell is Fade doing here?

Notes:

I love this au so I will be posting more oneshot of it, this is just the (first) fearlock centaur oneshot!

Work Text:

The large air conditioners hummed with life as Deadlock laid down, huffing.

Raze had broken the air conditioner in the main room about 30 minutes prior, and the base started to heat. Deadlock had overestimated how much heat her body could handle, yet soon enough, she went back to her room to recover.

She had turned off the lights and started her emergency air conditioning, and she laid on the cold metal in a sports bra, hair sticking to her pink face.

Her bear body heaved with deep breaths, both sets of lungs working in sync to cool her down.

Her door was closed, but she could hear soft footsteps outside. Silent if her hearing wasn’t able to track prey across miles.

She quickly recognized it to be Fade, turning her head slowly to the side to watch the door.

Fade knocked on the door, and slowly opened it with the spare key Deadlock entrusted her with. Her body was sleek and white, but her eyes tired and was slightly sweaty.

She stepped inside and shut the door quickly, keeping the nearly freezing air in.

She padded over to deadlock and loafed down, human body sat up and her arms crossed. Her eyes searched Deadlock’s body, as Deadlock kept laying on the ground.

She felt safe enough with Fade to not put up her normal defenses. With anyone else, she probably would have tried to stand up, but she kept on the ground, letting herself cool down.

Fade silently looked down, before her mouth left out a small laugh, but concern was in her eyes.

“You cooling down okay, deadlock?” She asked, leaning down to check Deadlock’s forehead. Deadlock was sweating less, but still overheating.

“…I’m fine, Fade.” Deadlock affirmed. “Just cooling off.”

“I’m glad Killjoy installed your air conditioning to be different from the normal conditioner.” Fade said, lying next to Deadlock.

Deadlock put her face in front of the fan, her breathing slowly becoming normal. “Yeah. She installed like… five different conditioning units incase they broke.” Deadlock responded, letting cold air flow on her. “… Don’t tell her I said this, but I appreciate it.” She whispered, looking to Fade. “It helps keep me cold.”

Fade laughed and stretched her cat body, lying closer to Deadlock. She approached and started to lay her two front paws on Deadlock’s flank.

“Fade.” Deadlock warned, already knowing Fade’s intentions.

“What?” Fade asked innocently, giving her usual shit eating smirk to Deadlock. Her claws unsheathed slightly as she started to knead at Deadlock’s heavy white fur, still staring Deadlock straight in the face with her heterochromic eyes.

Deadlock rolled her eyes and let out a grumble, but didn’t stop Fade’s biscuit making. She simply laid there, letting Fade knead. Her paws were firm but not enough to cause harm, more of a slightly hard press against her body.

Fade continued to knead, her paws moving the fur of Deadlock’s body. The Turkish woman continued her tirade of paws before stopping, laying her head and human body against Deadlock’s bear body. The cat yawned and curled up, using Deadlock’s thick fur and body as a mattress, quickly falling asleep for a cat nap.

Deadlock looked down at the unexpected weight of Fade, though she can easily lift her. Fade started to snore a bit, soft breaths between tiny grumbles of sleep.

Deadlock used her prosthetic to lift back and pull Fade closer, adjusting until her head hit Deadlock’s human shoulder. Fade hummed approvingly as her human arms subconsciously wrapped around Deadlock’s middle.

Deadlock looked down at Fade and nodded approvingly, relaxing into the ground where they lay.

Both women lay there for a while, Fade’s soft snoring slowly luring Deadlock into a light sleep. Her large paws curled and uncurled, her body fully lying down on her side, automatically turning to fit Fade’s cat body, which was curled up into a croissant shape.

The air conditioners hummed as the two women napped, solidifying their temporary peace in the cold air.
