Work Text:
It all started with those dumb eyeglasses.
Freddie entered the Shays’ apartment to check on the studio before the live broadcast later that day. Sam was early that she was watching in the living area, munching on a ham. The blonde was so busy with the ham and Girly Cow that she didn't realize she had company.
“Hey, have you seen Carly?” Freddie while walking to the opposite side of the couch.
Sam did not look up and continued watching “Yeah, she is with a guy in Groovy Smoothie. Hurry along you can still stop them” then munched on her ham.
“Dude, you know I don’t like Carly that way anymore” Freddie pauses, “Can I have a bite of that ham?”
“No way in hell, Benson” as Sam looked at him and stared at Freddie for a long time. Freddie wonders what’s up with her
“Uhh, are you okay?” Freddie concernedly asked his best friend
“What’s that on your face?” Sam skeptically asked, still staring at Freddie’s face like something bad happened to it.
“Glasses? I just got them this morning. Turns out my eyesight is getting bad with all the work and stuff I do all the time on the computer. It's insane how it just got bad now”
Sam just stared at Freddie while he blabbered about his glasses. Suddenly, she stood up and hurriedly put the rest of the ham in the fridge and hurried to get out of the apartment.
“Sam? SAM WHY ARE YOU LEAVING?”
“Getting away from you”
“WHAT?” Freddie doesn’t know what's happening to Sam. She’s definitely not like other girls
“Bye”
Then Sam shuts the door on the way out. Leaving a very flustered and confused Freddie in the living room. "What's up with her?"
Four hours later and it is almost time to start the webshow. Sam came back with only 5 minutes before the show. Freddie was still curious what upsetted the blonde while Carly sermons Sam about always being late and importance of punctuality. Freddie stares at Sam while he can feel that Sam avoids his eyes. She cannot look directly at him. He wonders what he did wrong earlier.
Freddie called out the blonde three times but received a weird shrug and obviously ignored the boy.
“SAM!” Freddie finally shouted
Sam stopped spacing out. “What?!” Looking at Freddie with an irritated look on her face
“We’re about to start the show, are you okay?” Carly worriedly asked, while Freddie is curiously checking on her
Sam sighed “I’m fine, just give me the remote. Do your thing, nerd”
Freddie eyerolled and threw the remote at her, she caught it. That's the boy's cue to start "in 5, 4, 3, 2..."
“This is Sam, and this is Carly and see you in the next iCarly” Sam pressed the remote that showed the icon card on the screen and the end of the week's webcast.
“And we’re clear” Freddie triumphantly said to the girls, congratulating them for finishing another show. Carly enthusiastically said thanks while Sam kept on staring at Freddie.
“Those damn glasses seriously” Sam whispered with an irritable tone. Those eyeglasses have been bothering her the whole day. Carly asked, “What about it?”
“Nothing” proceeds to look at anything in the studio but Freddie
“Alright… then if you need me, I will be in the living room downstairs. There’s still ham in the fridge for you, Sam” Carly enthusiastically said to her weirdly acting best friend. 'Something is definitely up with Sam' Carly thought
“Uhuh” Sam said in the most bored tone she could muster.
“Okay, I'm going to leave you guys be for a bit” Carly hesitantly walked towards Freddie. “Freddie, can you check on Sam, she is weirdly quiet today” Carly whispered to her best friend who is completely clueless why their blonde friend is acting like that.
“I know. I am wondering why too. She’s been like that all day" Freddie explained to Carly
“Weird. Even weirder, she did not say anything about your glasses”
“I know right, I was wondering why too.” Carly expressed that Freddie answered her with a look and said, "Don't worry, I'll take care of it". Carly thanked Freddie and took a last look at Sam before exiting their studio.
Freddie called Sam who is still standing in the middle of the studio. “Sam, did you hear Carly? Ham? Sam the Ham?” Freddie now went near Sam then smirked at her like he's about to tease her.
“Uh-oh” Sam absentmindedly said, clearly shocked Freddie was suddenly in front of her.
“Yeah, uh oh. Like what you see?” Sam realized she is definitely screwed. Freddie's smirk just got wider as Sam is clearly having a hard time thinking of a witty response.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Fredweird” Then she turned around, away from the smirking boy near her.
“Uhuh, it seems to me you actually like me with glasses on” Freddie is smiling now. Sam's thinking how much this boy enjoys making her suffer.
“No, I don’t?” Sam flatly said looking away from the guy
“You’re not sure?” Freddie followed her gaze just to annoy her. 'He is enjoying this too much' Sam thought
“...Yes” Sam silently said
Huh
That came out weird.
Sam blinked a few times then pecked Freddie in the lips then slapped him.
“OWWW, SAM” shocked with the blonde's actions
Sam then ran downstairs, said her goodbyes to Spencer and Carly in a rush, then went straight to the fire exit of the apartment complex. Ultimately feeling embarrassed with what happened. It all happened so fast.
“UGHHH why did I even kiss that nerd then slap him. Seriously, what’s wrong with me today” She frustratingly gripped the metal handles of the fire exit, still figuring out what the hell happened just 5 minutes ago.
She sat on the blue camping chair Freddie left in the fire exit. Somehow, she needed some peace and calm with whatever happened. 'The dork is clearly cute with glasses on, but he doesn't even need to know that' . After 15 minutes, Sam felt sleepy when suddenly she heard footprints coming towards the fire exit.
“Uh, hi” A male voice disturbed the peace of the fire exit. Sam sat up so fast.
“‘Sup” Sam replied
“You’re in my seat” Freddie said as he pushed himself into the fire exit balcony
“Clearly, four eyes”
“There it is”
“What?!"
“A comment about my glasses. You know I’ve braced myself with the insults, but that reaction was not in the list”
“Sure, 'cuz you know me tip to tail" Sam scoffed and looked ahead towards the cityscape
“It's because I do know you tip to tail that I am shocked you like me with glasses" Freddie scoffed back
Sam is silent, she knows he is right. Sam kept her back at Freddie
“You.. look great with those… glasses… foureyes” she whispered
“What?"
“I said it looks good on you, okay? I'm leaving" Sam hurriedly said and wanting to leave sooner to end the conversation.
“Oh no you don't" Freddie blocked the window access towards the building.
“Dude, what up. You got your compliment. Let me go" Sam struggled to maneuver her way towards the window. 'This dork definitely got bulkier'
“You forgot something" Freddie said calmly while still blocking the access
“What?" Sam irritatingly asked
“This." Freddie walked towards Sam and leaned down and pressed his lips to hers. It was soft and mellow. Freddie tasted a hint of ham, thinking it was probably from 5 hours ago. Freddie is thanking his eyes that he needed to get glasses. Sam was stunned yet smiled at Freddie.
"You know I just realized, I was wondering before how come you just got glasses just now" Sam asked while sitting on Freddie's lap in their usual couple hang out spot. The fire exit.
"Why?" Freddie asked his girlfriend about her query
"It's 'cuz you're literally facing the screen 24/7, clearly even with all the greens crazy feeds you somehow all that coding caught up to your eyes. I just realized with all that work, you just realized you need glasses now?" Sam asked, genuinely curious
"Hmm, one day while I'm looking around at the mall, there was a free eyesight exam, so I tried it, turns out I already have astigmatism and my eyes are starting to have a grade so I need glasses especially special ones since I requested those with blue screen protector for the eyes" Freddie explained then looking for Sam's hand and intertwining them.
"I see, I thought you just bought them 'cuz Carly is in a nerd boy craze lately" Sam explained while looking towards the cityscape
"Come on, you know I have not pined for her for like a year now" Freddie said as he kissed Sam's knuckles, blushing. She is new to their set up as a couple.
"Honestly, hard to believe. You did everything for her" Removing her hand from Freddie's but Freddie caught it right after she pulled it from him.
"You know, I've had a thing for you like for a while. I just didn't know how you'll react seeing as you can break my bones anytime. Now I know, I just needed some glasses to make you confess" Freddie genuinely said to Sam, staring at her. Sam really loves his face, more so now with those damn glasses.
"It's definitely those dumb glasses" Sam said as she kissed Freddie's temple.
