Chapter Text

Steve Rogers didn’t cry.

At least, that’s what everyone thought.

He was the steady one. The leader. The guy who carried everyone else’s burdens without complaint.

So when the Avengers stumbled into the common room after a brutal mission and found Steve sitting alone on the couch with his head in his hands, nobody knew what to do.

For a moment, they thought he was injured.

Then they heard it.

A choked breath.

Another.

And another.

Steve was crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quiet, exhausted tears that seemed to have been waiting years for permission to fall.

The room froze.

Natasha stopped mid-step.

Clint nearly dropped his coffee.

Thor looked genuinely alarmed.

Even Bruce looked like he’d forgotten how to speak.

Steve didn’t notice them at first.

His shoulders shook once.

Twice.

A hand scrubbed furiously across his face as if he could wipe the emotion away.

Then he looked up.

And realized everyone was staring.

The horror on his face was immediate.

“Don’t.”

The single word came out rough.

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew how.

Steve stood quickly, embarrassed, already trying to put the mask back on.

“I’m fine.”

Nobody believed that.

Especially not Bucky.

Bucky crossed the room without hesitation.

Steve took a step back.

“Buck…”

“No.”

Steve frowned.

“No?”

“No.”

Bucky reached him and grabbed both shoulders.

“For over seventy years I’ve watched you carry everything by yourself.”

Steve’s eyes dropped.

“Don’t do this.”

“I’m doing it.”

The room remained silent.

Bucky’s voice softened.

“Stevie.”

That did it.

The nickname hit something fragile.

Steve’s face crumpled.

The tears started again.

Bucky immediately pulled him into a hug.

A real hug.

Not the quick shoulder bumps they usually shared.

Both arms wrapped around Steve and held on.

Steve resisted for all of three seconds.

Then he broke.

A sob escaped him.

The sound hurt everyone in the room.

Steve buried his face against Bucky’s shoulder and cried.

Years of grief.

Years of pressure.

Years of pretending he was okay.

All pouring out at once.

Bucky held him tighter.

“I got you.”

Another sob.

“I got you, Stevie.”

Steve’s hands finally grabbed the back of Bucky’s shirt like a drowning man finding something solid.

The room quietly emptied.

Natasha was first.

Then Clint.

Then Bruce.

Thor lingered long enough to place Steve’s shield beside the couch before leaving too.

Nobody said a word.

Nobody made jokes.

Nobody filmed it.

Some moments were sacred.

And this was one of them.

Hours later, when Steve finally stopped crying, his eyes were swollen and his voice was wrecked.

He looked embarrassed.

Bucky simply handed him a tissue.

“You done?”

Steve laughed weakly.

“Maybe.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

Bucky smirked.

“Because your face looks ridiculous.”

Steve stared at him.

Then snorted.

Then laughed.

A real laugh.

The first one Bucky had heard in weeks.

And for the first time in a long time, Steve felt a little lighter.
