Chapter Text
“Just another wonderful day in our Fair city–”
“Not for long! Today I'll prove to both the city, and Wordgirl, that I'm the supreme villain! Then no one will question my authority! Not even Wordgirl.” Tobey giggles as he hunches over blueprints that one could presume are for his ‘Robits’. He scrambles to hide the papers he was so diligently working on as his mother yells for him. “Tobey! Get down here this instant! You’ll be late for school!”. Something about the authoritarian way she called to him made him gather his things and rush downstairs with equal speed.
Becky stuffs her costume away with a sigh. “Why does Dr. Twobrains need cheese at 6am for?” she had barely woken up that morning, just to rush to the scene of a crime before breakfast. “That's horrible Becky.. Did you get to eat anything after..?” Violet put a hand on Becky's shoulder hoping to make her best friend feel a little better or at least get her to talk about it. They had been doing a lot of talking as of late. After their fight with one another they both vowed to be more honest about their personal lives (especially about heroic personal lives…). “I managed to get a piece of toast and that's about it… well.. I did accidentally bite a block of cheese that got thrown at me..?” as the conversation turned back to the cheese related crime Scoops pulled out a notepad and pencil. “So, what happened? I need details! Did ‘Wordgirl’ do any new moves? Does Twobrains still not like goat cheese?” Scoops questions were never ending but that's what Violet and Becky were used to.
After the bell rang Becky went off to one of her favorite classes: creative writing. Ever since starting middle school, her and her friends' classes couldn't be any more different. They did have most of their classes together, but many things differed. One thing that they didn't have a single overlap in is their electives. Violet chose her favorite types of performing arts, Scoops had chosen yearbook and newspaper club (which were run by the same teacher), and Becky had cycled through all sorts of literature based electives. She had managed to get through all of them in her 3 years at middle school. Becky had looked at the board once taking out her materials and the prompt was a bit childish and over done in her opinion, but she shrugged it off. If it was overdone then she just had more understanding on the topic. “Enemies to lovers.. What if I.. Nah that's too cliche.. But.. oh! That might work!” Becky scribbled down a slurry of words till the class alarm went off signaling share and pair time.
“Meanwhile with Violet and Scoops..”
“Scoops.. I'm worried about her” Violet tightened her grip on Scoop's hand. She was worried, Becky had lost a bit of weight, and it seemed both Wordgirl and Becky Boxford had been needed lately. “I know what you mean, Violet. She seems stressed as of late. As a reporter I'm worried for the public but as her friend I can’t help but worry myself if she's okay.” Both Scoops and Violet care for Becky but as much as they wanted to tell her to stop for a moment and enjoy her adolescence they were also concerned on how Wordgirls absence affected the public. “Sometimes I wish we could tell Becky that even Wordgirl deserves a day off..” Violet leaned her head on Scoops. “I know, it must be hard to have to act as two people for Becky to be Wordgirl and herself..”. Scoops reminisced about a world where Wordgirl could take a break and hang out with her friends as Becky.
Ever Since Becky had confirmed that she was and still is Wordgirl to her friends they had noticed how dangerous being a hero is. Not to say they didn't know it was dangerous but when it's someone you know out there fighting for justice everything seems so much more deadly. Sure, none of the villains have killed her thanks to her being a superhero and all but who's to say that it will never happen? Becky's absence at school and their hang outs feels so much more annoying. Not to say they were mad that she was out protecting the city! Of course not! They were annoyed that she wasn’t there for normal petty things. She wasn’t leaving because her parents were mad at her but because the city would fall into the hands of a villain if she didn't leave.
“Ugh! I just wish she could be normal like everyone else our age. It makes me so mad!” Violet balled her left hand (the one that wasn't holding Scoops hand) Scoops nodded with a sigh “it's not fair. Even if she technically not like us.. Ahem.. she shouldn’t have to carry all that. We’re barely 14!”. “Not all of us, some have their birthday during summer..” Violet muttered. “Sure, I guess.. The point is that Becky has too many responsibilities for someone our age.” Although Scoops used Wordgirl for headlines he could report on other things if she needed a break from being the town's sole protector against evil. Violet hummed in agreement “yeah, she should have a day off one of these days to act like a normal kid. Even if Becky is Wordgirl she should stop being a hero once and a while”.
“Becky is Wordgirl…” a voice repeated once Violet and Scoops and already walked away. “Becky is Wordgirl..” the voice started to sound redundant. The voice couldn’t help but snicker to themselves repeating something that no one should’ve known. “I can't believe what I just heard.. This changes everything. If what they are saying is true then I think I have just the plan for this..”
“Who has learned Becky's secret?! Who is this mysterious voice? Is it too obvious? Is the author's back okay after slouching for so long?? Tune in next time for.. Wordgirl..?”
