Can I burn my way into your nonexistent heart, Or will you put out the fire before I can?

Summary:

Corvex is in love with Template even though Template can’t express or feel emotions, and makes the dumb decision of confessing.
He has a rough time.

Notes:

I ❤️ FireRing. And so to express my love for it, I’m shoving angst down people’s throat.

Please note I’m not great at writing emotional stuff. This kinda sucks.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Corvex wasn’t sure when these feelings began.

Ever since its Emotions Feature was enabled, things have been great.

Finally being able to express more than that stupid smile he was stuck with, it was freeing.

Being able to enjoy the rounds, able to relish the blood he shed during them.

Sure. It may only be following orders, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have fun, right?

It remembers the times he spent guarding the Karst company. Yeah, it deserves some fun.

Besides. Robloxians… especially those goddamn R.E.M workers… a disgusting species, that they were. Seeing the light leave their eyes was all the more satisfying.

Then came the other evilers.

To be honest, Corvex didn’t care too much for them. If anything, he only liked the fact that they were good teammates during one bounce.

Double trouble really depended on who he was paired with.

In general? Well…

Xyra was extremely irritating. That glitched animal, she was. Stealing kills or getting in the way. Their energy collided in a way that clearly didn’t help in any meaningful way. The two could not exist in the same space together, always ending up in an argument somehow.

Fallen was alright for the most part. While usually too weak or sick to do much due to her banishment curse, she was rather helpful and in a way kind when she was needed. Her condition got better after rounds, stealing others’s energy and all.

Shale. Probably the most normal one out of the evilers’s group, yet rather aggressive during rounds. Corvex found it strange, it made sense that Shale would be calmer than most, but it’d assume he would be more hesitant when it came to murder considering he was a robloxian before getting infected with the Stone Cold Virus.

Corvex didn’t care for him too much however, but he didn’t get in the way, so it didn’t mind him.

if anything, it considered him the only “acceptable robloxian.”

Template was a … strange one.

Isolating themselves from the group, focusing on… whatever their goal was, messing with the ring like… everyday, switching between effects during rounds. They couldn’t speak either, they only communicated with sound effects… if they wished to communicate at all.

They sure were interesting

Interesting enough to catch Corvex’s attention.

Being a robot, there’s not many you can relate to. Even if non human, the other evilers weren’t exactly robots. It often made Corvex feel rather… out of place. Especially the time way before his emotions were turned on, he was always treated like a simple piece of murder metal and nobody more.

Fortunately, Template showed up one day and suddenly Corvex didn’t feel too alone. While Template didn’t really interact with the evilers, it was better knowing there was another machine among the group.

And so obviously Corvex would be focused more on them, right? Considering they were both machine.

But that innocent focus suddenly turned into something more.

Corvex couldn’t explain why, but he just couldn’t take his eyes off of Template.

He told himself it’s nothing, he’s probably just happy to finally have someone he can relate to… in a way.

But that wouldn’t explain why his heart burned hotter when he was around them,

Why it felt like his system was overheating even though it was designed to endure hot temperatures,

Why he always hoped he would get Template as his D.T partner, even if he and they weren’t too good of a duo, it meant spending time with them.

Not to mention the Fire Effect Template had.

God, Template looked especially hot when using it (pun intended), as much as Corvex hated to admit it.

The way their ring caught ablaze and how the smoke wrapped around the round head of theirs, leaving a toxic trail.

The orangish color of the ring, similar to the color of Corvex’s body. It was always so … beautiful. Corvex loved to see it

The smell, the appearance, the taste he imagined. Oh, it was intoxicating. Infuriatingly so.

Corvex wished he could use their fire as fuel, how good it could feel inside his body.

But enough of those dirtied thoughts! Annoying him, Corvex did not understand when he started thinking like that.

Template was not special in anyway.

For a long time, he didn’t care about them. They were just a silent vessel of the ring, so why SHOULD he care? If anything the only reason Corvex had an interest in him is because they were both robots.

..So when did IT become so important that Corvex started loving it?

And why did he have to love it specifically?

His love was pointless, deep down he knew. And yet…

And yet.

He believed maybe… there was a chance.

Maybe Template could feel and what he heard about them was incorrect.

Maybe his feelings were not pointless.

Should he take that risk?

Shoot his shot?

He didn’t know.

Probably not.

But perhaps it could be worth it.

The evilers’s lobby was not anyhow similar to the lobby where R.E.M employees rested before rounds.

While both were an open area, the evilers’s lobby was much more… unwelcoming.

Dark and cold it was. A forest like area with one singular area where the killers had their own separate “homes”, if they could call it that.

That’s where most of them hung out anyway.

It was unlike the island area the survivors were sent to.

Their area resembled more of a camping place. A bright campfire in the middle with their respective “houses” around.

Template, usually spending time in their own isolated area, was surprisingly outside. At a reasonable distance away from the group, of course. Seemingly messing with their ring and testing out their ‘abilities’ on the poor trees nearby.

It wasn’t uncommon for the evilers to beat up the area. Especially Xyra who treated the trees like some sort of parkour area. The forest had a lot of broken and dead trees thanks to her.

Corvex noticed Template. He usually did.

And so… today was the day.

Making his way over there without the others noticing, he slowly approached the tall robot.

Nervous in a way he never was before. Good thing he couldn’t sweat due to his high body temperature, other while he would be sweating a river.

Stopping behind them at a close distance, he decided to finally make himself known.

“…uh- hey Template!” Corvex called out, loud enough to catch their attention.

Template turned around, seemingly looking confused for a moment before bringing their head down to look at the smaller robot.

Giving an uninterested wave, Template waited for it to speak.

Corvex scratched at its arm in nervousness, Its claws scraping the metal quietly.

It already got this far, might as well make sure Template does not get too impatient.

“…I want to tell you something.”

It managed out, looking at the floor.

Template did not speak.

They never did.

Instead waiting for Corvex to go on as they gave out a small sound.

It was annoying.

“It’s… more of a confession, really.”

He weakly added, finally forcing eye contact with it.

“I—…” putting a heart near the hole in his chest to hide the way his heart burned brighter than the sun, he tried to keep a straight face. “Ever since my emotions have been turned on… uhm, I’ve been feeling strange.”

Template tilted its head.

“— especially around you.”

Template gave out a confused sound.

“It’s confusing I know—“ Corvex rubbed the bridge of his nose, clearly not enjoying this, the hand on his heart clenching into a fist as he took it away.

“Dammit, look. I love you, okay??”

He finally admitted, his voice laced with annoyance, his expression harsh yet … vulnerable.

He then got quieter at the obvious lack of reaction and response. His face softening into something more disappointed but not surprised.

“… You probably don’t get that, do you.”

It was more of a statement than a question.

Template just nodded.

Shit… yeah. Knew you wouldn’t…”

“Uhm. Yeah, uh- W-whatever…” he tried to play it cool, but was failing miserably.

He was glad that he was incapable of crying.

Template remained quiet. Unbothered.

So Corvex just continued.

“I just wanted to get that off my chest. My bad for bothering you… I guess.”

“No point in standing here now though.”

He muttered quietly, almost to himself. before turning back away, making his way back.

But not before adding.

“…I’ll see ya back at the campfire.”

And with that he walked away.

Leaving Template curious but not interested enough to engage more.

The evilers have not seen Corvex after that, since he locked himself up in his isolated area.

He blankly stared into space as he sat quietly inside, away from others.

Feeling tired all of the sudden.

And despite that, he couldn’t help but think.

That was not worth it. Corvex knew it wasn’t worth it.

It was pointless to love them, obviously it was.

They couldn’t return his feelings, Corvex knew they couldn’t.

Even if they could, would they?

Probably not.

So why did he still foolishly hope for them to be able to?

It hurt.

Why did it hurt so bad? He didn’t know.

Corvex wasn’t used to dealing with these types of feelings.

He hated it.

Hated how his stupid heart could still feel underneath the fire surrounding it.

He finally got to experience emotions.

and yet he now regrets it.

Because out of everything, why must he experience love? Especially in this environment.

Love. such a strange, bitter feeling.

Setting him up for failure. Every single time.

And for what?

He did not gain anything from it, and will not gain anything from it in the future.

Not like there will ever be a chance for him to do so anyway.

So why did his heart still stubbornly try to anyway?

He didn’t know.

All he knows now is that he is an idiot.

And he’d rather sleep and forget the day.

Because tomorrow.

He’ll still admire template from afar.

His heart will still burn for them.

And he won’t be able to put out the fire.

Later. Corvex was much more aggressive during rounds.

R.E.M did not care. If anything it was interesting to see.

They wondered what got the robot so riled up.

Don’t we love doomed robot yaoi.
