Work Text:

The Major Carnival seemed like a.. mostly cheerful place to be. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their time there, but… looks are deceiving.

Who would’ve thought that a Hairionette would be feeling particularly… sad?

Actually, a lot of the Paironormals.

Jokes aside, Hairionette had been feeling quite… “old” lately. It was feeling very sad and nostalgic about the old times.

You felt bad for it, since you’ve never seen it so down… so you visited it in its room to see if you could do anything to help it feel better.

“Hairionette?”

“Hmm..? Do you need anything?” It asked, with a gentle, caring, yet also kind of pained smile.

“Not really. I just want to know if you need help.”

“Don’t worry about me… have a nice day.”

You sighed and left its room. Clearly, it wasn’t going to allow you to help. But you weren’t going to give up.

Now, you had some fun plans with Hairionette, even if it wasn’t aware of them. You made some ice cream in two cones and then returned to its room.

“Hey Hairionette! I’ve got something!” You yelled, standing in front of the door.

A few seconds went by before it opened the door. It stared at the ice cream, almost flabbergasted, for a few seconds, before taking one of the cones and licking it.

“What’s all this for?” It asked.

“Well, I uh, thought maybe you needed something to… take your mind off of things. So we’re also going to go on a walk.”

“Hun, you really don’t need to do all this…”

“But I am! And it’s for you! So come on, let’s go.”

Hairionette sighed and floated out of its room, almost reluctantly.

“It’ll be good for you.” You assured it, though it didn’t seem too convinced.

It was a good thing that the Carnival was calm so that you could enjoy your walk with Harionette in peace while eating ice cream.

Although it didn’t really want to, you noticed a small smile on its face when you glanced over at it.
It looked over at you and sighed, “I think you were right…” it admitted.

“Whew! That’s a good thing, because I had one more thing planted up my sleeve.” You replied, relieved.

“What do you mean, one more thing?” It asked.

“You’ll see!” You laughed softly.

After that, everything went quiet and the two of you continued eating your ice cream in peace. You couldn’t help but watch Hairionette’s peaceful expression as you walked and it floated.

Soon you reached the lower regions of the Carnival, where most monsters don’t go, and you stopped walking.

You pulled your phone out of your pocket and scrolled through a selection of songs, before choosing one from the 70’s that was high-energy. You put your phone down and started dancing.

It didn’t even have to be good dancing, you were just… dancing!

Hairionette looked confused.

“What are you doing?” It asked, raising one eyebrow.

“Dancing! Come, join me!!” You giggled, waving a hand in an invitation.

It seemed hesitant to dance, but as it saw you letting loose and just doing whatever, its moves grew more confident as it tried to follow along with you. But then it gave up and started doing whatever.

You stopped dancing for a bit to just look at Hairionette. It looked so happy, just dancing without a care in the world.

Then you continued dancing with it for a while.

Afterwards, both out of breath, the two of you sat down, leaning against a crate. Hairionette was sitting next to you, fidgeting a bit with its hands. You noticed, and asked, “Are you okay?”

It looked up at you and smiled gently.

“Way better than before, honestly. I guess I did need a break to just… do whatever.”

The two of you laughed softly, before getting interrupted by Hairionette pulling you into a hug. You gave it a gentle squeeze and smiled, taking a deep breath.

The moment didn’t last long, however, as you heard some snickers coming from behind another crate.

“Sweet moves, lovebirds!” said Dakktyl, peeking from the crate and laughing, though not entirely mocking. Just teasing a bit.

Hairionette covered its face in embarrassment while you gave it a gentle nudge with your elbow.

You were amused, but poor Hairionette would probably combust from embarrassment with Dakktyl still around, so you yelled, “Go watch someone else dance, silly!”

Dakktyl got out from its crate hiding place and put one of its hands out to open and close it as it walked away. You laughed a bit but then nudged Hairionette again, who was still covering its eyes.

“Are you good?” You asked, “It’s okay now, Dakktyl’s gone.”

Hairionette uncovered its eyes and sighed happily, “Yeah. That was quite embarrassing but… it reminds me of how you’d tease your friends about crushes. Especially when you’re young.”

“You know about that? I thought that was a things only us humans did?”

“Honey, there’s a lot you don’t know about monsters.” It said playfully, before leaning against you in a side hug.

You smiled and wrapped an arm around it too, sighing peacefully.
