Work Text:

Din Djarin knew the moment in his life where regret would start to seep in, a punishment for everything he has done.

He just didn’t know that the one regret would be Luke Skywalker.

Somewhere between finding the kid a Jedi, Din had thought of him and only him. The idea of contacting a person he loved so dearly was.. not ideal.

For him, that is. Additionally, he thinks Luke wouldn’t want to see his face again. Not after going off the radar for months, that is.

But what can he do? They recited the kriffing vows. Now Din went right in, messed up, then lost the love of his life, his husband ─ for a reason he doesn't even know.

Could he even call Luke his husband still? He doesn’t know, all he knows is the familiar cloaked figure from the footage.

Grogu’s little hand sprawled against the screen, like he’s connecting a bond with the figure as their weapon slashed through the darktroopers like they’re nothing.

"Dah?" His babbled startled him, as his wide eyes stared onto Din.

"Yeah, kid, that’s him." I hope not but I hope so for you went unsaid as Din held Grogu’s free hand with his index finger.

It only took a few minutes for everything to be clear as Din ordered someone to open the door.

There it is. The green glow from the lightsaber emitted from the fog as the figure walked in.

Said figure gently took his hood off, revealing those beautiful locks of blonde that Din used to run his hand through and blue eyes that could pierce through you.

"Are you a Jedi?" Din questioned, even if he knows the answer, he’s.. unsure if any of his.. friends knew their history. Hopefully not.

Luke’s eyes widened a little upon seeing Din, all in his glorious new armour since Luke last saw him.

Before he could answer, Grogu came sprinting with all his might to his cloak, tugging it lightly.

Lift!

Gloved hands wrapped around Grogu’s middle, "Oh, Grogu, I missed you too." Luke muttered just enough for Din to hear.

Is he a terrible father for separating them?

"Din." He snapped his head up ─ when did he look down? ─ upon hearing his name being called.

Luke stared him up and down before nodding his head towards the elevator. Din complied, taking a few steps before he felt a hand on his shoulder, grounding him where he stands now.

Din turned around to see Cara with her eyebrows furrowed, behind her ─ Fennec had lifted her weapon, locked onto Luke.

A silent conversation began between the two friends.

You sure? Cara’s eyes glanced over to Luke.

Yes. Din nodded.

He could feel her grip tightened before finally letting go.

Comm if you need help. Cara taps her left ear twice.

Giving her a final nod, he walks to where Luke stands with.. a darkened expression, not towards him but towards Cara.

Din walks ahead, he hears Luke footsteps behind him, following.

This is going to be awkward.

I knew it.

Neither of them spoke the way down, Din knew that Luke was taking him to his X-Wing.

Luke had a firm grip on Grogu with his left arm as his eyes stared ahead. Does that whenever he had a lot in his mind, Din knew, he always knew.

He glanced down towards Luke’s gloved hand, free yet stiff. Slowly, he inches closer with his own hand.

"Din." His hand retreats as he tilts his head upwards, staring everywhere but Luke.

Refusing to answer, because he knows he will say things he doesn’t mean to say, he looks to the side.

"Din."

Din stays still, like he’s being threatened with a knife to his throat or Grogu being held hostage by Moff Gideon.

"D─"

He sprints towards the familiar ship, leaving behind a baffled Luke. There, he hears a familiar beep from Artoo, Luke’s droid.

As much as he distrusts them, Artoo is an exception. Everything about Luke is an exception. But Din won’t admit that until the day he dies.

Before he could make it to the droid, a hand clasped around his wrist. Strong, grounding.

"Din!" He finally turns around to see Luke, a calm expression on his face but he knew long enough to see that it’s just a facade.

He stares down onto Luke’s grip around his wrist, "What?" Din stilled, hearing that soft tone from his own voice, reserved only for Grogu and.. Luke.

"You─ I─ please, would you look at me?" Luke lets Grogu back on the ground as the little womp rat sticks to his leg.

A saddened expression on his kid’s face was all it took for Din to look up, a small gasp escaped his mouth as both of Luke’s hands were on his helmet ─ where his cheeks would be.

He remains still, like a monument, as Luke studies his helmet. The only touch from someone this close he ever got was from Luke, and that was months ago.

Feeling the same hands on his helmet both eases and kills him.

"Hello, starlight." Din snapped his head from Grogu to Luke’s.. teary expression.

Din didn’t know why but his hands moved by itself to his face, wiping away the tears that streamed down Luke’s face.

"It’s been a while, hasn’t it?"

"It has."

Din’s hand cupped around Luke’s cheek, perfectly like it was made to be there as the other climbed up to his neck, bringing him closer.

Luke practically melted into his touch, longing for it after so long, as he felt a cold sensation on his forehead.

Din’s helmet. On his forehead.

Din’s. Helmet.

That was Luke’s breaking point. A keldabe kiss.

Luke wrapped his arms around Din’s taller body, sobbing quietly into his shoulder. Din stiffened before wrapping his own arms around Luke.

"Luke, I─"

"No, no─ be quiet."

Only the occasional beeps from Artoo and babbles and coos from Grogu filled the air as time seems to stop around them.

The sobs became rasped breathing, Luke’s hand moved to force their foreheads against each other again.

Oh stars, I miss this. Luke thought as just Din says, "Luke, I miss you."

"Din─" He lifted his hands up, just at the rim of the helmet. "May I?"

Then, his husband’s soft chuckle came back and suddenly, Luke is back at Tatooine, where they first met, after Din’s little crash not far from the farm.

"Of course you can, you are a part of my Clan."

Wasting no time, he lifted the helmet, hearing the familiar hiss. There it is, the gorgeous brown eyes and locks of curl that Luke fell in love with.

Even after not seeing each other for months, Luke could never forget those eyes. Even after he.. ran away, even if they divorced that day.

Luke will always remember that Din has brown eyes, even if he doesn’t want to. But he does, forever, and he intends to keep it that way.

"There you are, starlight." The helmet dropped onto the floor as Luke leans in to plant a kiss on Din’s left cheek.

Gloved hand cupped his right, thumb caressing his grown-out beard.

Grogu coos from the sidelines with Artoo rapid beeping, almost as if they are cheering. Din’s laughter, unfiltered by the voice modulator in his helmet, melted Luke right on the spot.

"Okay, kid, now’s time to go with Luke." What?

Luke stumbled backward. "You’re not coming with us?"

"Luke, cyar’ika, how am I going to fit in your ship?" Din’s lopsided smile appeared as he pointed to the ship behind.

True, it’s a single seater, just enough space for Grogu to be on his lap.

"But─"

"Mando, you done?" Cara’s voice emitted from Din’s helmet.

As Din kneeled down to lift it, Luke cursed silently, feeling worn down from the fact his husband’s friend had ruined their moment unintentionally.

"Yes?"

"Nothing. Just, uh─ checking in, I was afraid that the Jedi had killed you or something."

Din huffed a laugh, "Think I can’t win?"

"What makes you think you can win against a Jedi?"

Din snorted. "Because I can." Luke's mouth twitched.

Cara's voice crackled through the comm. "That's not exactly a reassuring answer."

"It’ll work out fine."

"That's debatable."

The channel clicked off before Din could answer. Luke watched him shake his head with a fond sort of exasperation. The sight did something unpleasantly warm to his chest.

Months.

It had been months.

Months of convincing himself he was fine, pretending the empty side of his bed didn't bother him, refusing to check hyperspace reports for a familiar transponder signature.

And now Din was standing right in front of him.

Artoo’s beeps knock him out of that trance, "What is it?"

Finally, he turns to his ship, broken.

Kriff.

"Ain’t that a sight?" Din chuckled beside him, arm wrapping around his waist.

"Oh, shut up." Luke rolled his eyes, arms crossed. "Guess I’m hitching a ride."

Beside him, Din hummed, "I’m sure Boba wouldn’t mind."

Boba─ "Boba Fett?!" Luke exclaimed, startling the shit out of Din─ and Grogu.

The child coos upon hearing the loud noise, Luke rushes to reassure him, fingers rubbing his ears gently.

Thankfully, Grogu didn’t seem upset, only shocked by the loudness of his tone.

"You know him?" Luke turns to Din as he carries Grogu in his arms.

He shrugged, not knowing where the two stood, "Sort of."

As much as it doesn’t sound convincing enough, Din seemed to accept that answer which─ stars, makes Luke all the more lucky to marry him, even if it's by force, he didn't mind.

Then, Din makes a walk for the elevator, assuming he’s going back to his friends. Luke follows, Artoo trailing behind.

The Mudhorn Clan reunites once more, and the last, Luke hopes. They have a lot to talk about after they get back home.

"So, you didn’t get your ass beaten after all." Cara speaks up once the four walk in through the door.

"Have little faith in me?" Din quips back, "Just enough." Cara smirks as Fennec steps forward to their little circle.

"I contacted Boba already, he is already on his way. ETA is five minutes."

Bo-Katan steps forward, leaving a heavy sigh of relief. "Well, now that's sorted out,"She tilts her head up to Din.

"How do you know him?" She nods her head towards Luke, leaving her still gaze onto the Jedi holding the child.

Din follows her gaze, stance somewhat melted upon seeing Grogu’s coos when Luke began tickling him.

Sensing the switch in the topic, Luke sets Grogu down next to Artoo, leaving the two in a conversation full of beeps and coos, and joins the others in the circle.

"Hello. My name's Luke." The boyish grin that Din likes to see reappears. Finally.

Though the others seemed to be in shock upon hearing his name, "Luke? Like Luke Skywalker? The Jedi?"

Said Jedi laughs upon the use of his past name, taking in their mix of confused-shocked expressions all at once before finally inhaling a deep breath.

"I’m not a Skywalker anymore." Luke began, as Cara’s eyebrows began to furrow. "I took my husband’s name."

He takes Din’s hand in his own, gripping it tightly. "It’s Djarin now. Luke Djarin."

A minute passes by now, Luke assumes because everyone seemed to stop moving ─ aside from the babbles behind them.

He can sense Din’s nervousness through the Force, squeezing his hand once before he stepped forward, blocking the other’s body despite being shorter.

But before he could open his mouth, Cara’s howling in laughter as Fennec joins her, leaving Bo-Katan and Koska’ mouth agape.

"I knew it!" Cara finally says after a few seconds of laughing as Fennec quiets down. "Damn, Mando, I did not expect you of all people to be married, nonetheless to the Jedi."

Before Din could say anything else, Boba’s voice cut through the air. Everyone seems to silently agree to pause this conversation as they all pack up to leave.

Cara drags Moff Gideon’s body across the floor, Fennec in tow along with the other two Mandalorians. Leaving only the married couple in the room with the child and astromech.

For a big ship, this place had the tiniest elevator ever.

"I was surprised to hear that you want─ took my name," Din muttered, lifting Grogu into his arms, said child snuggled close to his chestplate.

Luke turns towards Din, both hands wrapped around Din’s free hand, "Being a Skywalker was something I was born into, being a Djarin was a choice."

"Luke─"

"Din. I spent my whole life inheriting my father’s name, don’t you think it’s time for me to want the name of the man I love?" Luke caresses his wrist, just over the pulse.

"Kriff─ I─ I’m so lucky to have you." Din lifts his helmet just enough for his fingers to go and wipe his tears.

"I’m even luckier to have you." Luke tugs his hand closer, walking towards the now open elevator.

Despite the Luke's disappearance months ago, it felt like it just made them closer. By stars, Luke was grateful for that.

"He’s your riduur?"

"Yes."

"And he took your name?"

"Yes.."

"And you two said the vows?"

"Yes."

Boba laughed, echoing through the whole ship. Din’s never going to hear the end of it.

It only took a few hours for them to land in Nevarro, they exchanged wishes and promises as Din, Cara, Luke, Grogu, and Artoo went down with an unconscious Moff Gideon in tow.

There stood the High Magistrate Karga greeting them humbly by the gates to the city as the Slave I left the atmosphere.

"Welcome back, my friends." Greef clasped Din’s arm in a firm handshake before giving Cara a nod.

"Grogu!"

Hearing his name, Grogu leaped into Greef’s arms from Din’s own, cooing as the man rubbed his ears softly.

Luke watched the scene happening before him in joy, a sigh of relief once he sees how well Grogu is treated.

"Greef, this is my husband, Luke. Luke, this is Greef Karga, High Magistrate of Nevarro." The two smiled towards each other, exchanging quiet greetings as Grogu rushed back to his Luke’s arms.

Luke wastes no time to rub Grogu’s ears. Cara and Greef share one look before leaving the small family alone, with the excuse of discussing Moff Gideon.

Din thinks it’s banthashit.

With the promise of Greef giving him a brand new ship enough to hold the family, Din lets him go.

That leaves him, and Luke with the kids ─ kids?

"Luke."

"Yes, starlight?"

"Let’s talk." Luke stiffened as Grogu cooed, wondering why he stopped rubbing his delicate ears.

"Right."

Luke sets Grogu down as Artoo beeps to the child who seems to get the idea and wanders off to some rocks in the distance, leaving the two alone just outside the gates to the city.

Din walks the other way, far enough from the gates but not too far from Grogu. Luke trails behind, already thinking about how the conversation will go.

The Mandalorian settles down on a massive rock by the lava river, pats down the empty space next to him to which Luke complies.

Stars, I’m going to hate this conversation.

Neither of them once glanced at the other, suddenly finding the lava interesting as it bubbled. It reminds him of Grogu.

"Why do you love me?"

Luke sucked in a breath and turned sharply towards─ a bare face of his husband. He cursed under his breath before taking his cloak off and draped it around Din’s head.

"Din? I─ what do you mean?"

"Answer me first."

"I.."

I love you like my cloak, making me feel warm in the coldest environment.

I love you like my lightsaber, something strong that can stay with me during times of need.

I love you by how you can make our regular outings an amazing time just by being there.

I love you by how being with you makes me so much more relaxed with the way you just are.

"I just knew the moment I met you years ago. With you I─ I never have to be more than just Luke." He connects their hands together on top of the rock.

Din finally turns towards him, teary eyes as he stares at their hands, "Then, why did you disappear for months?"

Luke looked away. The question had been waiting for months, since the whole thing on Moff Gideon's Light Cruiser.

"I didn't think you'd want me to intrude."

The silence that followed was immediate.

"What does that mean?" Din’s tone was heavy as his hand began to tremble.

Luke swallowed. "I went to Sorgan." Din's brow furrowed. "I never told you."

"No, you didn’t," Luke smiled sadly. "I wanted it to be a surprise."

Something twisted painfully in Din's chest. Luke laughed painfully like he had just gotten a knife pierced through his chest.

"I got there late."

And suddenly Din understood just enough.

The village.

Omera.

The way she'd looked at him. The way she'd asked about the helmet. The way Din’s face had gone pale the moment realization dawned.

"Oh."

Luke closed his eyes. "I saw you."

"Luke─"

"You looked so─ happy."

Din's heart sank, gripping Luke’s hand tighter, afraid that he would run away.

He opened his mouth before closing it again. Because arguing over details suddenly felt meaningless.

When he turned his head towards Luke, all he saw was a look of devastation.

"As stupid as it sounds," Luke continued, voice unsteady, "You looked like someone who'd finally found a life outside of.. everything."

Din didn't move as Luke laughed quietly. "A real family."

The irony of that word nearly broke Din.

"And I thought.." Luke paused. "Maybe I was the only thing keeping you from having it."

For a moment, Din could only stare. Months apart because Luke had stood there and convinced himself of that.

"You thought I'd choose someone else."

Luke's eyes dropped as his gaze began to wander elsewhere.

Din felt something in his chest crack.

The realization that Luke had been carrying this alone. That he'd looked at everything they were together and still believed he could be left behind.

"Luke." His voice came out rough. Luke didn't look up. "Look at me."

Slowly, he did. Din wished he hadn't. There was so much hurt there. As if he'd spent months teaching himself to live with being unwanted.

"Do you know what I remember about Sorgan?" Luke blinked and Din inched closer.

"I remember wishing you were there." Luke froze. "I remember watching Grogu run around that village and thinking you'd laugh if you saw him."

Luke's breath caught. "I don't remember her." He didn’t sense any negative energy from the Force.

"I remember wondering where you were."

A small pause as the realization dawned into Luke, as he turned towards Din fully.

"Din─"

"No."

His voice broke in the way that made Luke want to strangle himself.

Stars, he had been so stupid.

"No, because I've spent months trying to understand why you left. Feeling that I have finally screwed up a bond with a wonderful person."

Luke looked like he couldn't breathe.

"And all this time," Din shook his head. "All this time you thought I was replacing you."

The hurt in Din's voice was impossible to hide now. "After everything, even the vows despite it not being in the best circumstances."

Luke's eyes filled. "I know."

"No, I don't think you do."

Din inched closer until there was barely any distance left between them.

"If you had asked me.." His voice dropped. "If you had given me a chance, that is," Luke looked away. Unable to hold his gaze.

Din reached up and caught his wrist. "I would've followed you."

A shaky breath escaped him. "Din—"

"I would've left that village the second you asked." Luke's eyes squeezed shut.

Because Luke believed him, believed every single word.

"I would always choose you, over anything and everything."

The words came out almost painful. As though Din couldn't understand why Luke didn't already know.

"And I did."

That’s all it took for Luke to smack his lips against Din’s. It was sloppy, sure, but it’s enough for them.

Luke made sure to have a firm tug over the cloak, making sure no one is looking at Din’s face.

A pretty face like that shouldn’t be open to all.

"You know, I was afraid that after everything back then, you would divorce me." Din muttered as he held their foreheads against each other.

"Really?"

Din huffed a laugh, "I mean, you practically got forced into it." He shrugged as he leaned closer towards Luke.

"I agreed to it!" Luke laughed softly as he clearly remembered that day.

A day he’ll never forget.

The ship fell out of the sky just after sunset.

Luke saw the smoke from afar and was on his speeder before he could think twice.

By the time he found the wreckage, the pilot ─ Mandalorian? ─ was still alive, barely alive.

"Hey!" Luke called as he climbed into the damaged ship.

The armored stranger immediately pointed a blaster at him. Luke rolled his eyes. "You're bleeding all over the place."

The blaster didn't lower. "Go away."

"No kriffing way!"

An hour later, Luke was regretting every decision that had led him here.

The Mandalorian was injured badly enough to need treatment. Said Mandalorian also refused to remove his helmet.

"I can't help you if I can't see the wound."

"No."

"You'll die."

"No."

"That's not how dying works." The helmet tilted.

Luke was beginning to suspect this man argued with walls for entertainment.

Finally, after another twenty minutes of bickering back and forth, the truth came out.

"I may only remove my helmet before my Clan."

Luke blinked.

"What?"

"My Clan. Family. Partner. By Creed."

Luke stared.

The Mandalorian stared back.

Then Luke snapped his fingers. "Perfect."

"No─"

The Mandalorian looked like he wanted the desert to swallow him whole.

The whole getting married gig lasted less than five minutes, maybe even less than three. All it took was exchanging vows to deem them married, in Mandalorian culture, that is.

The moment it was over, Luke nudged the side of his head.

"Okay. Helmet."

The Mandalorian groaned. "Look─”

"You agreed."

"I was heavily pressured."

"You were dying."

With a groan, the helmet finally came off. Luke immediately crouched beside him with a medical kit, ignoring the fact of how beautiful this man was.

Too bad it’s hidden under that helmet.

"There."

The gorgeous stranger watched him clean the wound. "You risked a great deal for someone you don't know."

Luke shrugged. "That's what you're supposed to do."

For a moment, the Mandalorian was quiet. "My name is Din. Din Djarin."

Luke smiled. "Luke. Luke Skywalker."

"I’m hoping this doesn’t mean you want a divorce?" Luke stares towards the sky, "I don’t know about you but I’m enjoying my life so much and I have a child along with an amazing, beautiful, strong husband to back it up and─"

Din kissed him again, "I get it, cyar’ika, and no, we are not getting divorced." Luke chuckled as he slowly pulled away.

"Good, because I want to have forever with you."

Then Din stared at him, those beautiful brown eyes with the gaze of a thousand stars, by the Makers, Luke is going to die just from it.

But if it meant being able to see them everyday then ─

"So do I."

So be it.
