April 7th 3097
When I woke up in the morning in my cell-like room in a sharp cornered house I woke up Catherine. She's my sister and she is exactly 2 years younger than me to the minute. I yelled "it's our birthday”. “Let me sleep a little longer Matt,” she says, still half asleep. “Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed” I mumble. I walk down stairs and start to make my lunch, even though it's my birthday I still have to go to school. Eventually Catherine comes downstairs and I can finally leave for school. She obviously made her lunch last night.
At school we went our separate ways. First thing in the morning I had math, math is my favourite subject because it makes sense, then again everything is on a schedule nowadays. Life is scary if you are so much as a second late you get a warning and if you do something they don’t like then lets just say you're dead or worse you could become a soldier.
At noon sharp you have fifteen minutes of rest to eat your lunch. Me and Cathrine sit at our usual table and eat our lunch. After I'm done she tells me that she has something to commemorate my seventeenth birthday and she pulls out a small yellow cupcake. It's lemon flavoured, my favourite. Now I feel like I need to give her something in return so I tell her “You’ll have to wait for my gift, sorry I didn't remember to bring it to lunch” Hopefully I can whip something up in art class I think to myself then the bell rings next up is history.
In history class my history teacher rants on and on about the history of our lord and ruler. Thankfully this class was about the artifacts. The artifacts are three items found in the desert of doom in a hollow ceramic orb. In the orb was a tablet that had glowing symbols on it, a crown with the same symbols and a necklace. All I know about the necklace is that our lord and ruler never takes it off. The tablet can turn people into soldiers and the crown can control soldiers. The worst part about being a soldier is that you can see what you do but you can’t control what you do.
When I got home I asked my sister how her day was at school and she told me how during history class she learnt that there was a seed in our lord and rulers necklace and years ago he planted it in his private chambers. I immediately gave her a weird little shape said “happy birthday Cathrine” then I immediately ran to my room and took out my ideas cork board every thing is making sense now I had done research no tree makes fruits that allow creatures to take on a more powerful form so there must be fruits from that tree and that's why some of the soldiers are riding pegasus. “MATT! Time for dinner” my parents yell, they must have just gotten home.
During dinner we hear a knock on the door my parents look through the window then they quietly say”Matt take Catherine and go to the basement, in the boiler room there is a trap door go now take this bag”they say while handing me a bag of canned food I glance out the window and I see soldiers they are after my parents. What did they do? I wonder. then I tell Cathrine to get stuff that she wants to bring with her. I run upstairs, get a suitcase then pack some clothes and some matches. Catherine and I meet up downstairs and we go to the boiler room then through the trap door the last thing I hear is screaming before I close the trap door.
I light one of my matches and in the flickering light I see shelves and smell rotting food. I look around more closely and I see rats as well as a door. Me and Catherine run through the door. Right before the match burned out I understood why my parents wanted this house so badly. It was built atop an old house that was connected to underground pathways.
