Summary
Ed commits an unforgivable sin when he tries to bring his mother back to life. Alphonse is caught in the backlash and nearly killed. To save him, Ed gives up more than just an arm and a leg. So Al is never trapped inside the armor, but the trauma of the experience means Ed can't relate to him any more.
He can relate to his commanding officer. And he hates that.
After a succession of increasingly worse assignments, Ed realizes that Mustang is the only person he can ever truly rely on, even as he doesn't trust him.
Roy is determined to be there for Ed, no matter what. It's not manipulation, it's care, given to a boy who constantly finds himself more isolated and disconnected from the people and world around him every day. Yet, in trying to ground him and give him stability, Roy accidentally engineers a situation where he is the only safety Ed ever experiences in life.
