Work Text:

You can spend years building your image, training to exhaustion, and learning to manage your emotions, but it only takes a single second for everything to go to hell. Yet the worst part happens when the haze of rage clears, leaving you all alone with the consequences.

Marco walked through the paddock, and even the cool evening air felt suffocating. His fingers twitched convulsively in his pocket. The appeal had been rejected, leaving the original verdict unchanged, a suspension from Sunday's race. Waves of hot shame and freezing cold washed over him in turns, making his sweat-dampened T-shirt stick uncomfortably to his back.

Everything had gone downhill so fast. Not long ago, he was confidently leading the championship, feeling invincible, but a string of sudden misfortunes had turned this season into a nightmare. Today's sprint was the final blow. Flashbacks replayed in his head in a continuous loop: the crash, the gravel, and his Alba Rosa fallen over on its left side. He had already been walking away calmly, swallowing his disappointment, when he heard its wild roar from behind.

The marshal was just doing his job, but he awkwardly grabbed the handlebars and twisted the throttle. The engine roared, and Marco lost it. Adrenaline burned away his ability to think. He remembered lunging at the marshal. An ugly flash of lost control, all just to hit the kill switch. The engine died, but it had now cost him everything.

He could already see the first headlines, and they rang in his ears louder than any engine. Everything inside him twisted into a painful knot. Breaking down under emotional pressure was out of the question, but his knees were buckling and his breathing grew ragged. He needed to hide, to find the one person who could help him ground himself and shelter him from the media frenzy.

He froze in front of a familiar motorhome. Forcing his weak fingers to bend with effort, he knocked gently on the door.

The door opened almost immediately. The look in Marc’s brown eyes was unusually heavy, devoid of even a hint of the half-smile he usually greeted Marco with on any other day. But not today. He pursed his lips, letting his gaze linger on Marco's face for a brief second, and then silently stepped aside, letting him in.

Inside, it smelled of air-conditioning and a very familiar cologne. Marco took a step forward, his shoulders dropping shakily. He wanted to bury his face in Marc’s neck, to hide away from the cruel world, but Marc remained motionless. His entire body was tense, like a wire pulled taut, and his arms were crossed tightly over his chest.

"Do you even realize what you’ve done, Bezzecchi?" His voice wasn't loud, but the sheer coldness of it made Marco's stomach churn. Marc hadn't even bothered to offer a greeting.

Marco froze, feeling his chest tighten sharply as a hot wave of resentment, mixed with shame, rose in his throat.

"You didn't see what happened out there!" Marco raised his voice, his hands flying into the air in sharp, frantic gestures. "That idiot grabbed the throttle while it was in gear! The bike could have launched right back onto the track, someone could have gotten hurt, don't you get it?! The engine was redlining, it could've blown up or burned to the ground! I was scared, Marc. It's like I completely blacked out for a second, I was just operating on autopilot."

"Exactly, you blacked out." Marc took a step forward, and Marco could physically feel the air grow heavy around them, making it harder to breathe. In Marc's brown eyes flashed that uncompromising look, the very thing that forced everyone to yield to the nine-time champion.

"You are the only one to blame for this situation. No matter what emotions you were feeling, you had no right to lay hands on him. You have to keep yourself under control, no matter what happens. There are no excuses for this. None at all."

Marc dropped his head back slightly and exhaled sharply through his nose, his jaw clenching. "Millions of people are watching us. Kids who want to be just like us are watching, and the marshals are out on that track for our safety. You simply had no right to behave like that. None of us do."

His words hit like physical blows, striking dead center, over and over again. Marco had expected to be listened to, held, and helped to share this burden, but instead, he got a brutal breakdown of his mistakes. Marc was talking about the slipping title, the lost points, the sponsors tearing up contracts, but Marco could no longer process the words, only that disappointed tone.

The realization of an irreversible catastrophe completely overwhelmed him like a suffocating wave, and the most unbearable part was that Marc of all people was the one judging him.

Marco's eyes filled with tears, blurring the silhouette in front of him into a dark, fuzzy shape. His lower lip trembled, his hands dropped, and he tried to clutch the hem of his T-shirt, but his fingers shook so violently that the fabric kept slipping away. His breath gave out entirely, breaking into helpless sobs. He could physically feel his knees giving way, the ground threatening to vanish from beneath his feet. On the verge of breaking down in tears and collapsing right onto the floor, he was utterly crushed by his own powerlessness.

The harshness in Marc's voice, his eyes, and his entire demeanor vanished the exact second he noticed how violently the other man's shoulders were shaking. All his put-on sternness crumbled, replaced by a sudden, frightening anxiety.

"Hey, Marco, come on. No, no, no." Marc took a sharp step forward, closing the distance between them in a single stride.

He caught Marco's trembling wrists, gripping them tightly in his warm palms, forcing his hands down and physically steadying him. Marco couldn't take it anymore and literally collapsed forward, his forehead hitting Marc's shoulder. The first hot tears spilled over, instantly leaving damp spots on Marc's shirt. He shook violently, sobbing uncontrollably, finally letting himself release all the panic and despair that had built up inside him.

"Shh, it's okay, it's okay..." Marc let go of his wrists and gently ran his fingers through the messy curls at the back of Marco's head. He held him close, softly but firmly, letting him hide completely in the embrace. "One step at a time, we'll sort it all out."

"What do I do now?" Marco whispered quietly, barely audibly, burying his face somewhere near Marc's collarbone and desperately gripping the fabric of his shirt. His voice sounded completely raspy and foreign because of the tears. "It's all over. They're going to destroy me."

"Nothing is over," Marc replied calmly and firmly, slowly guiding him toward a small sofa deeper in the room.

"Tomorrow morning, before the warm-up starts, you are going to the marshals. You'll go alone, no PR people, no managers, and no cameras. You'll find that exact guy, look him in the eye, and apologize. Tell him exactly what happened: you were scared for the bike, the adrenaline hit your head, you lost control. But make sure to emphasize right away that it doesn't excuse what you did. You need to be sincere, understand? He has to see that you truly regret it."

Marc pulled back slightly, forcing Marco to look up. His hand moved to the Italian's cheek, his thumb gently wiping away a wet tear track.

"And then you take the suspension gracefully. Stay in the garage with the team, keep yourself visible, show everyone that you respect the rules and the decision. Give a proper, measured interview, and repeat your apology publicly. The press will make noise for a couple of days and then move on to someone else, trust me, I’ve been in much worse situations. The main thing is to show that you know how to admit your mistakes and aren't running from responsibility. If you're honest and keep putting in the work, people will appreciate that."

Marco took a deep breath, feeling the weight in his chest begin to ease. The fear of tomorrow hadn't completely vanished, but now that Marc was truly there with him, reality no longer felt so catastrophic.

"Thank you. And I'm sorry for showing up like this," Marco whispered, burying his face back into Marc's shirt, breathing in the familiar scent and soaking in his warmth.

"You can come to me no matter what state you're in, you know that perfectly well," Marc replied softly. He leaned down and pressed a long, feather-light kiss to the crown of Marco's head, burying his nose in his hair. "We will handle everything. But tomorrow morning, you go and fix what you did on your own."

Marco closed his eyes, listening to the soothing beat of Marc's heart beneath his cheek. He knew that one of the toughest days of his career lay ahead, but right now, in this room hidden away from prying eyes and cameras, he could finally just breathe.
