Johnny laughed as he followed Pony out the door. “C'mon man, you gotta wait!” Pony grinned at him as he started to scale the porch railing, shimmying onto the roof. “Hurry up, we're gonna miss it!”
Johnny huffed, scaling the porch with a more practiced ease. Pony figured it was from all the time he spent with Dally. “What're we even doing up here? Wouldn't it be better to watch the sunset at the lot?”
Pony grinned. “Yeah, but we ain't only watching the sunset. You'll see.”
He sat down next to him, knocking their knees together as the sun slowly went down, painting them in orange and golds. Pony always kept his eyes glued to the sky, and Johnny always kept his on the way Pony's skin caught the glow, lighting up his face in a way that softened the rough edges of the grease in his hair, his grey-green eyes glinting in the dimming sunlight.
Pony caught him staring, a rosy blush overtaking his expression. “What're you looking at…?” Johnny smiled, intertwining their pinkies. “You.”
Pony ducked his head, despite the shy smile on his face, and turned his attention back to the horizon.
Once the moon had risen, Pony lay on his back, Johnny following suit. “Any second now…” he muttered, practically glaring at the sky.
Then it happened.
So quick that Johnny almost didn't see it, a flash of brilliant light streaking across the sky, the star falling in the distance. His mouth dropped open as the sky was suddenly filled with streaking celestial bodies lighting up the darkness with an ethereal glow.
Pony watched as Johnny gazed on in wonder, seeing the light fill his dark eyes and feeling something in his heart soften at the awe-struck expression on his face.
Almost as quickly as it came, the night sky stilled, the remaining stars twinkling in the darkness. Johnny let out a breathless laugh, turning on his side to face Ponyboy. “How did you know about that?” Pony flushed, grinning awkwardly. “Saw it online. Thought you might like to see it.” He paused, glancing away. “Um, look, I wanted to show you this…”
He sat up, rummaging in his jacket pocket for a moment before pulling out two bracelets. One was a dark blue beaded bracelet with stars and a moon charm, and the other reminded him of a sunset, orange and yellow beads with a sun charm.
“I uh, I made these.” Pony explained awkwardly. Johnny stared for a moment before sitting up. “They’re…us?” Pony nodded. “The sun one is me, and the moon one is you. You always talk about the stars when you spend the night at the lot, so now whenever I see stars, or the moon, I think of you.”
Johnny couldn't help the warm smile on his face. “Then, can I have the sun one? So I can think of you when I see it?”
Pony flushed, his grin widening. “Yeah.” He took Johnny's hand, fastening the bracelet around his wrist, then clasping the moon one on his own. He held up their hands. “There. Now we match. It– it ain't too cheesy, is it?”
Johnny beamed. “Naw, I love it. Thank you.” He tugged him in for a chaste kiss, the two of them sharing a laugh with the same breath.
They watched the stars for a while longer, pressed shoulder to shoulder, before going inside to escape the cold evening air. Still, Pony couldn’t help but feel like he had the entire night sky right next to him as he looked into Johnny's eyes.
