Chapter Text
The bridge was quiet. The environmental hum was at its lowest cycle. The anomaly turned slowly on the viewscreen. The consoles clicked.
Julian's eyes were on Miles.
Miles's hand stayed on the back of the chair.
MILES: Ensign. Stand down.
His voice carried, even though he hadn't raised it.
TORREN: Sir, I have invoked...
MILES: I heard what you invoked.
Miles let go of the chair. He came down the steps from the upper deck one at a time, unhurried, one hand brushing the rail.
MILES: And it doesn't apply.
TORREN: With respect, Commander...
MILES: With respect, Ensign, you're an ensign.
Miles stopped two meters from Torren. His hands were loose at his sides.
MILES: General Order Forty-Two, paragraph six, subsection two applies when the second-ranking officer is unable or unwilling. I'm the second-ranking officer. I'm able. I'm willing. You don't have the authority you just claimed because I'm standing here.
Torren's jaw set. His hands were still trembling. His voice was not.
TORREN: You're the captain's closest friend...
MILES: That's right.
TORREN: ... which constitutes...
MILES: It constitutes eight years of paying attention.
Miles's voice still hadn't risen.
MILES: The Captain spoke to you sharply. That's all that's happened so far. Sharp's not unfit. Sharp's not even close to unfit. You want to talk to me about what you saw, you come find me after your shift and we'll talk. But you don't get to take a command chair off a man because his voice went cold for thirty seconds.
TORREN: Commander. The Captain is an Augment of the Khan class lineage, in command of a Federation starship, and what we just heard was...
A soft sound from the auxiliary console. Ezri had not sat back down.
MILES: Khan class lineage. That's what you've decided to call it.
TORREN: It is the historical...
JULIAN: Lieutenant Reyes.
Lannia's head came up. The security officer at the rear station looked up from his console.
Julian had not stood up. His hands rested on the arms of the chair. His face was still.
JULIAN: Escort Ensign Torren to the brig. Security override authorization Bashir-four-seven-tango.
The security officer at the rear station (Reyes, second-shift, three months aboard) did not move.
JULIAN: Lieutenant.
Reyes's eyes went to Miles.
JULIAN, (flatly) I gave you a direct order.
MILES: Belay that.
He had not looked away from Torren.
The bridge went very still.
Julian's head turned, slowly, toward Miles.
JULIAN: Repeat that, Commander.
MILES: Belay that order. Lieutenant Reyes, stand at your post.
JULIAN: You countermanded me.
MILES: Yes.
JULIAN: On my bridge.
MILES: Yes.
Julian stood up.
He did not stand quickly or angrily. He stood, looked at Miles, and waited.
JULIAN: (coldly) Lieutenant Commander O'Brien, you will explain yourself.
MILES: Captain, two minutes ago you ordered Ensign Torren confined to quarters. Thirty seconds ago you changed it to the brig. You issued a personal security override to a junior officer to enforce it. I want you to sit back down and tell me what changed between those two orders.
JULIAN: What changed is that Ensign Torren publicly accused his commanding officer of unfitness, and the appropriate response...
MILES: Captain. Sit down.
JULIAN: ... the appropriate response to a public challenge of command authority is not...
MILES: Julian.
Julian's eyes were on him. They were very steady.
JULIAN: (sharply) You will address me by rank on this bridge, Commander.
A short silence.
MILES: Captain. With respect. Sit down.
JULIAN: I am not going to be lectured by my First Officer on the floor of my own bridge in front of my crew.
MILES: No, sir. You're going to listen to your First Officer for ninety seconds because that's what the chain of command is for.
Julian's hand came up. Index finger pressed against thumb.
JULIAN: Ninety seconds.
MILES: Yes, sir.
JULIAN: Begin.
He did not sit down.
Miles took one breath.
MILES: You walked onto this bridge eight hours ago. Inside the first hour you snapped at me in the senior staff briefing. You walked it back. Halfway through alpha shift you came down hard on Ensign Patel for a calibration error that any first-year officer makes. You walked that back too. You've been pressing your finger and thumb together for the last two and a half hours and I don't think you've noticed.
Julian's hand was still raised.
MILES: Forty seconds ago, Ensign Torren, who has a hero problem and a regulation he half-memorized, said out loud that you sounded different. You went from confine-to-quarters to brig-with-an-override in the time it took him to finish the sentence. And right now, in front of this crew, you are arguing that a public challenge to command authority justifies what you just did.
JULIAN: It does justify...
MILES: Captain. Listen to that sentence.
JULIAN: I am perfectly capable of...
MILES: Listen to the sentence, Julian. A public challenge to command authority justifies a security override on an ensign. Listen to yourself say it.
Julian's mouth opened.
The bridge was very quiet.
His finger and thumb had not separated.
JULIAN: I...
He looked at his hand.
His hand had gone rigid. He stared at it.
JULIAN: Oh.
That was all he said.
His eyes lowered. His mouth pressed thin. His hand came down, and he sat down in the chair, and he did not look at anyone.
JULIAN: Article Fourteen. Voluntary relinquishment.
His voice was quieter than it had been all shift.
JULIAN: Effective immediately. Pending medical evaluation. The ship is yours, Commander.
MILES: I have the ship, Captain.
Julian stood again, slowly, one hand braced on the arm of the chair.
JULIAN: Ensign Torren.
Torren had not moved.
JULIAN: Your invocation is... your invocation was operationally incorrect. The substance of your observation was not. I will note both in the log.
TORREN: Sir.
It came out small.
Julian nodded once. He did not look at Miles or Ezri. He walked off the bridge toward the turbolift, and his pace was steady, and his shoulders were back, and the bridge crew did not look at him as he passed.
The turbolift doors closed.
Miles let one breath out.
Ezri was already moving. She did not say anything to Miles. Her hand brushed the back of his arm as she passed (a single point of contact, brief) and she followed Julian into the second turbolift.
Miles stood at the foot of the steps for a count of two.
Then he turned.
MILES: Ensign Torren. With me.
TORREN: Commander, I...
MILES: With me, Ensign.
He started toward the ready room. At the steps he looked back at the communications station.
MILES: Ensign Lannia. You have the conn.
LANNIA: Aye, Commander.
He walked the rest of the way without looking back. Torren followed.
Behind them, Lannia's hand came down from her face.
LANNIA: Lieutenant Reyes. Maintain post. Helm, hold position.
Her voice was not quite steady.
