After Jakurai's experiences in the battlefield triage—not to mention the experiences that came after—doing most of his surgical work in hospitals is easy by comparison. It had been a long time since he'd seen—or caused—serious pain, for any significant length of time, on someone who could truly feel it, and he'd all but forgotten how intense, how intimate, it could be to see that pain up close.
Until Samatoki makes him remember…and when he realizes that Samatoki likes the pain, Jakurai succumbs to a moment of weakness.
