A Summer Treat

Summary:

Sarah is craving s'mores and Jareth joins her to make some.

This is a little one shot story spin off from my fan fiction At Death We Start, but there is no need to have read that fan fiction to understand this story.

Notes:

This is just a little spin off story that came to my mind. I'm pretty sure that this will be a one shot, but let me know if you want more.

Work Text:

The scent of marshmallows roasting over the fire was delightful. It had been a long time since Sarah had smelled that. She couldn’t remember the last time she had made s’mores the authentic way. When she had found herself craving them after dinner, she hadn’t expected her husband to join her in making them. Jareth had even ensured that only the highest quality ingredients were available for them to use.

“I think it’s burning,” Jareth commented from his seat on the large log where he was sitting next to her.

Sarah looked to see that his marshmallow had quickly gone from fluffy white to cracked black.

“Take it off the fire and eat it,’ she told him. It wasn’t like they couldn’t spare a burnt marshmallow. They had a gigantic plastic bag full of them.

Jareth moved his roasting stick off the fire and managed to slide the burnt sticky candy off. He plopped it into his mouth and tasted it. Sarah watched him in the fire glow, taking in his facial expression as he ate the burnt marshmallow. The Goblin King seemed confused by the new taste.

“It’s a bit odd,” Jareth gave his verdict when he finished eating it.

“Toby likes to eat roasted marshmallows this way,” she said.

“Your brother has questionable taste,” her husband decided before reaching into the bag and spearing a fresh marshmallow on to his roasting stick.

Sarah let out a jovial laugh before pulling her own roasting marshmallow away from the fire. It was burnt as well. She pulled it off the stick and ate it before following her husband by taking another marshmallow from the bag and preparing it to roast over the fire.

“I think he might take offense to that,” she commented with a snort. “As his sister, I must defend his honor and inform you that there are plenty of people in the Aboveground that enjoy burnt marshmallows.”

“Humans are strange creatures,” Jareth remarked.

“Look at who you married, darling,” Sarah pointed out. “A rather strange and theatrical human with an overactive imagination.”

Her husband looked at her, his blue eyes sparkling in the firelight.

“No. I married the woman I love,” Jareth corrected her before holding his roasting stick over the fire. Sarah followed him, trying to keep better focus on her marshmallow to get it off the fire before she burned it again. “What your peers up there call an overactive imagination is you accepting true magic.”

“I love you.” That was the genuine truth. Something told her that she was always meant to be here at his side as his equal. She was always meant to be the Goblin Queen. “My king charming.”

She saw him grin. It was obvious that he still enjoyed that note that she had written in The Labyrinth. Sarah could have been embarrassed by what her teenaged self had documented. Instead, she embraced it.

“I never realized how peaceful the labyrinth is at night.”

She hadn’t come out into the twisting walls of it in the evening before. Knowing the truths and secrets of it as the Goblin Queen, it wasn’t a place that she would frequent, at least not until she understood more and gained a better grasp of her powers.

“In this part of the forested area it is,” Jareth said, glancing for a moment to the trees that surrounded the clearing they were in. “Other parts are far from it. Unfortunately, as my queen, you may have to help me deal with some residents in those parts as needed.”

“I’d be glad to.” Perhaps the work wouldn’t be easy, but it was enough that Jareth sought her help. “It looks like our marshmallows are ready. Take them off the fire.”

Sarah had noticed that the marshmallows had turned a perfect golden-brown. Jareth turned his focus back to the marshmallows. He took Sarah's roasting stick from her hand and pulled both his and her sticks off the fire as Sarah reached into a box to pull out two graham crackers. She carefully split the graham crackers in half, making four pieces. She then picked up a recently unwrapped chocolate bar and put some chocolate pieces on top of two of the graham cracker halves.

“Put the marshmallows on the chocolate,” she instructed.

The king slid the marshmallows off the roasting sticks and on top of the chocolate. Sarah closed the sandwiches with the other halves of the graham crackers. The queen then presented one of the s’mores to her husband.

“Enjoy.”

Jareth took his s’more and bit into it.
