My Finger on the Trigger, As the Deer Enters My Crosshairs

Summary:

What if Green wasn't the other Imposter? What if it was someone different, someone who was much closer to another?

What if this alien learned differently, and became fond of the very thing meant to be destroyed?

[An AU where Brown became the other Imposter instead of Green]

Notes:

Okay a few things before you read (skip this if you don't really care):
I have really bad depression, so if I don't update, I'm probably in a episode.
I use ze/zem for the imposter, idk, just felt like it?
The Crewmates are human, sorry you don't have you weird little guys running around, I don't write like that I guess???
And finally, it's been a couple of years since I've uploaded my work to something like ao3, so sorry if it's butt.

Chapter 1: Wearing Someone Else's Skin

Summary:

The Imposter kills Brown and takes their place, ze starts the plan zers created.

Notes:

Sorry this chapter is short, I'm kinda depressed as hell rn, I usually try to get 1k+ words per chapter, but I think for my own sake to finish this I'm not going to.

Chapter Text

They wanted to scream but was cut off by a sharp tendril to the throat, ze crawled inside from the slit, zer was small. Easy to slip in, but it was still incredibly painful, the esophagus gave way to this rather disgusting pink thing sliding inside. Something had breached Brown’s suit, coming from the Ore+ cracked on the ground near them. The same had happened to Orange, Brown saw them choking on this… this thing with them as well.

Brown’s hands went to their throat, trying to cough ze up before ze took control of their whole body. It was useless– as whatever ze was– ate their Brown’s flesh to make their body zer own. They went flat against the floor, dead. Blood dripped from their neck, but didn’t make it out of the suit in time before the alien slurped it back up.

Ze quickly got up, ready to learn, ready to experience and make the others go through hell.

There was still a hole in the hull. Orange, who was also replaced, was trying to push a giant crate of trust balls to patch up the hole. The other had filled its role quite nicely, already, despite how much it was the dumbest thing ze had ever laid eyes on.

Ze crawled forward, only for a hand to grasp zers, Yellow. The grasped onto a box, someone else’s hand grabbing theirs to keep them from falling through the hole in the wall. They looked unaware and unassuming, but they looked at zem with this odd look in their eye. Was it happiness? No, it was… care. The alien’s attention went onto them.

“Easy target. Mostly alone with Brown…” First thought, bloodlust running slightly wild in zem, then logic made its way through. “No, I’d be suspicious, smarten up.”

After the hole was patched up, and everyone calmed down, “Brown” made quick work of White. Too loud, too annoying, easy to make plans mess up. They would split in half in soon time, and they wouldn’t be able to warn the others. Despite this, they would still stumble to the Cafeteria in order to try and warn them of the monster among them.

But there was something oddly personal about the murder.

“Egotistical capitalist scum.” ze thought, and was taken aback by zer own thought process. “Why did I think that..? Whatever, not important, have to get back before the yellow one realizes.”

Ze went back, made pizzas, and joined the celebration with the crewmates and their survival. They were blissfully unaware of the soon carnage to come. Ze smiled very lightly under zer visor as ze watched White’s blood splatter all over. A beautiful and chaotic work of art, mixing with the screams afterward.

Ze turned to Yellow, seeing their horrified expression, and a strange feeling arose within zem. Pity, remorse, and an intoxicating worry. The alien summed it up as simply being residue feelings from Brown. A common occurrence, however, ze didn’t expect it to be so strong, and especially towards someone so… rash.

“The host mind really had feelings for this one, didn’t they? Such a shame they’re gone now.” Ze lifted a hand towards Yellow, resting it on their shoulder, forming their voice from the depth of zer throat:

“Are you okay, Yellow?”

“I… Of course not! I just saw someone die in fronta me!” they lashed out, before quickly calming, “Sorry, just… oh stars…”

“It’ll be okay.” ze went to hug them, wrapping zer arms around them, it felt natural.

“Thanks.” their arms wrapped around zem in return, warm, alive, weak. Ze twitched for a moment before forcing zemselves to relax. “You feel cold, you okay?” they asked, looking up at zem.

“I’m fine, just the air from Storage, probably.”

After the whole debacle, Yellow was chatting alone with zem, getting ready to make another pizza. Yellow was chatting about something rather foolish, the new intern, Green.

“See, I don’t get why they need more people here! We have enough mouths to feed already, we don’t need another one. They’re just exploiting them like the rest of the interns we’ve had.”

“I agree, we don’t need more people on this ship.” “Brown” muttered, kneading the dough with zer now-freezing hands. “Makes it more difficult for me.”

Yellow, upon seeing “Brown” knead the dough, rested their hand on top of zers. “Hey! Let me have some… whoa.” they pulled their hand back. “Your hand is freezing! Do you need to see Blue, I don’t think that’s normal…”

Ze stiffened, ze couldn’t let zer disguise slip this early. “I’m fine... just stressed.”

“Whateva’ you say.” Yellow sighed, taking the dough from zem and kneading it more, they soon hand-tossed it to get the shape. “Brown” made the sauce in the meantime, plotting out zer next murder.

“That Blue guy is getting their nose in things that it don't belong... they’re next, even if they’re a little...“ ze dissociated for the rest of the time, hatching out the plan in zer head. Tonight, when everyone else was asleep, ze would strike. Leave their body in the Medbay bleeding out.
