Work Text:

Mathilde didn’t regret the decision she’d made. She couldn’t. Marrying a man was necessary, for her reputation. Perhaps not as necessary as it might have been, if she weren’t a Warden, but she had been treated with more respect after she married. Her husband wasn’t a cruel man, but he didn’t see her like Stefania had. Which was a good thing, she reminded herself. Stefania had known her a little too well. Her husband had never really suspected anything of her, even knowing he had married a Warden. He thought her as heroic as her reputation. Stefania had known her cruel and cunning and vicious, which was why it had had to end. She’d made her own choices, and she refused to look back. But sometimes she thought she was as interchangeable to her husband as he was to her.
