April 1931

It had been a hard few years, for all that Daenora’s family had plenty to fall back on. Their wealth had been built up over generations and so, however much they were losing now, they were more than getting by. Still, she knew what was happening outside their bubble, even if Aerion didn’t want to acknowledge it. Crucially, she knew that Kiera’s family hadn’t been as lucky as her own. Not everyone had the Targaryens’ level of wealth to depend upon. Kiera did, by marriage, but Daenora had seen her pinched expression and wondered how much of it her cousin was wasting on booze and drugs. Maekar was unlikely to cut his son off, so Kiera’s husband was therefore equally unlikely to be in a position to utterly doom them, but Daenora knew she must be worried. She would be in her position.

Her worries in her own marriage were entirely different. Her husband was unhappy about how business was going and, no matter how hard she tried to placate him, he took it out on her. She sported more bruises than ever these days. She could tell from the looks when she had failed to cover them adequately. If Aerion noticed too, it would be all the worse for her. So she was very grateful for Kiera’s care.

It had been a mundane occasion, the first time she had wanted to kiss Kiera. After that, she had kept thinking it. Kiera had looked after her more than anyone. She said nothing, for she feared what Kiera would say. If it ended their friendship, if Kiera looked at her with disgust, she couldn’t bear it.
