Work Text:
Aggie feels her heartbeat pick up in excitement when she hears the ring of the doorbell.
She smooths her top down one last time before crossing the space between her bathroom and the front door of her apartment.
Aggie flings the door open, revealing Jana, who’s grinning from ear to ear, carrying a bag and what seems to be a bottle of wine.
“Hola,” she greets Aggie and pulls her into a tight hug.
“You brought wine?” Aggie asks in a teasing tone, letting Jana inside.
The brunette just shrugs at that. “I think we deserve it to treat ourselves once in a while, don’t you agree?”
Aggie laughs as they make their way into the kitchen.
“I bought stuff for spaghetti aglio e olio, I hope you don’t mind garlic? It’s quite simple, but I still like it,” Aggie explains as Jana sets her bag down and puts the bottle on the dining table.
“And you’re asking me that only now? What kind of host are you, Agnes?” Jana asks, seemingly trying to suppress a grin, and elbows Aggie into the side.
Aggie tries to imitate an apologetic look. “Sorry, I might have forgotten to ask you beforehand, seems like I’ll have to eat the delicious pasta all by myself then.”
Jana slaps her playfully. “No you definitely won’t, of course I like garlic, you dork. Now tell me what to do before I decide to have dinner with someone else.”
“Oh, we can’t have that. Here, you can cut onions,” Aggie counters and hands Jana a cutting board.
And just like that they fall into a comfortable chatter, moving easily around each other while preparing their meal.
Aggie doesn’t really remember how their friendship came around. In one moment they were strangers, only knowing one another’s names, the next they were basically inseparable. Lucy had introduced them to each other, inviting them both and a few others for a small get-together at her place. In the end, the two spent half the evening sitting in some corner of Lucy’s backyard, talking about everything and nothing.
After that, the conversation from that night never really seemed to die down. They spent the next days constantly chatting via texts. Texts turned into meetings at different coffee shops or parks and them just wandering around in London. Those meetings then led into them spending hours and hours at each other’s apartments, where they often spent their time cooking or watching movies. Aggie can’t remember a day they didn’t talk to each other in any kind of form.
And somehow it has never been easier for Aggie. She doesn’t think she’s ever gotten on this well with anyone, can’t remember she ever felt this comfortable with someone. Aggie feels like she can truly embrace herself with Jana, all unfiltered thoughts and stupid ideas. She often struggles with the fear of being too loud, or too much in general, but not with Jana, who makes her feel seen like no one else has before.
Over dinner, they spend their time talking about a Spanish series they started watching some time ago, Jana eager to watch another episode after they finished eating. Aggie’s not really fond of the series. The plot itself is interesting, but the series doesn’t have an English translation and reading the subtitles gets really exhausting for her after some time. Never the less, she easily agrees, wanting to make Jana happy.
The food is good, the wine as well. At one point, Aggie pretends to be at a wine tasing event, making extravagant gestures, which makes Jana giggle. There’s nothing Aggie enjoys more than to pull a laugh out of Jana.
Once they have finished their meal, Aggie starts to do the washing-up. Jana insists on helping, but Aggie just shoos her out of her way and tells her to put on some music instead.
“Any wishes?” Jana asks.
Aggie thinks for a second. “Maybe something I don’t know yet,” she proposes.
Jana nods. Just a few moments later a Spanish or Catalan, Aggie isn’t even sure, song with a soft melody fills the kitchen. That’s another thing she likes about her and Jana’s friendship: Not a day goes by without her learning something new, wether it’s about a random band Jana likes, a festivity that’s celebrated in Catalonia or something completely different.
Aggie is so focused on the sound of the song and the pan she’s currently drying that she doesn’t hear Jana coming up behind her. She suddenly feels her pressed against her back, Jana’s hands coming around Aggie’s waist. Aggie tenses up for a second before relaxing again, her heart skipping a beat or two. This is something she’s still trying to get used to: The way Jana is so affectionate, often touching Aggie in some sort of way. Aggie tries to convince herself that that must be just another cultural difference between Spain and England.
Jana rests her chin on Aggie’s shoulder. “You better hurry up, I’m already getting tired and I still want to watch one episode of our series,” she murmurs into her ear as Aggie feels a shiver run down her spine.
“You’ll have to let go off me then so I can put this away,” Aggie laughs, trying to hide her surprise by Jana’s closeness.
Jana huffs unhappily, but detaches herself from Aggie anyway.
Only a few minutes later, they find themselves on Aggie’s couch. Aggie sits on one side, feet propped up on her coffee table, even though her mum would probably scold her for that, Jana on the other side. It’s already dark outside, the only source of light being the dim glow of the street light right outside of Aggie’s window and the TV.
They only get through half an episode before Jana starts to yawn. “Do you mind if I lay down?” she asks, blinking at Aggie with her long lashes.
And of course Aggie doesn’t mind. But what she does not expect is that Jana lays her head down onto Aggie’s lap.
Jana sights seemingly content while Aggie’s heartbeat picks up once again. She tries damn hard to focus on what is happening on TV, but instead she’s hyper aware of every place of her body where Jana is touching her.
Aggie suddenly doesn’t know what to do with her hands anymore. And somehow the only thing her panicking brain comes up with is to start playing with Jana’s hair. While Aggie’s curses herself, Jana doesn’t seem to mind at all, a soft “feels good” leaving her lips.
Because she doesn’t know what to answer to that, Aggie decides to share a probably slightly embarrassing story from her childhood: “When I was small and couldn’t sleep at night, I always used to lay next to my mum and play with her hair until I fell back asleep. It somehow helped me calm down.”
Jana looks up at Aggie. “Aw, that’s so sweet,” she smiles.
Jana turns her attention back on the TV, but Aggie can’t help herself glancing down to Jana every other moment. All while her brain runs a hundred miles a minute at having Jana this close in what feels to her such an intimate position.
And then Jana meets her gaze, the series seemingly not being that interesting anymore. Aggie’s hands find a halt. She wants to look away, pretend like she’s not just been caught looking, but she can’t. Instead she just stares into Jana’s deep brown eyes. Aggie is sure she can feel the adrenaline running through her veins.
She holds her breath, feeling the tension between them grow thicker. And then Aggie’s eyes wander down until they meet Jana‘s lips. Her soft lips that suddenly look very kissable.
She wants to say something, but Jana beats her to it: “Can I kiss you?” she rushes out, a blush rising on her cheeks.
Aggie wants to answer, wants to say yes, but all that comes out is a stuttered breath. So she nods instead, feeling absolutely pathetic at how easily she is captivated by Jana. But that probably sums up their relationship: The way Aggie adored Jana from the very first moment they had met, the way she would spend every second of every day with her if she had the opportunity to. So maybe yes, captivated describes Aggie’s whole situation quite well.
In less then a second Jana pushes herself up to sit in Aggie’s lap. She cradles Aggie’s face with her warm hands and before Aggie even knows, Jana’s lips are on hers.
All that’s left for Aggie to do is close her eyes and feel the tenderness of Jana’s kiss. She leans into it, trying to savour the feeling, one hand wandering into Jana’s hair, the other finding her waist.
It all ends far too quickly for Aggie’s liking with Jana pulling away as she giggles.
“What?” Aggie asks anxiously, not sure about what to make out of Jana’s reaction.
“We stink of garlic,” she laughs as she hides her face in the crook of Aggie’s neck.
“Oh god,” Aggie groans in embarrassment, too caught up in the moment to even notice. “If I knew beforehand how this would turn out I would have thought of a different meal.”
“I still liked it,” Jana whispers.
“What? The food or the kiss?”
“Very funny. Obviously both.”
Even though she is not quite sure what this whole thing means yet, Aggie pulls her closer at that. “Me too.”
They sit there in silence for a moment. Aggie feels very at ease out of the sudden.
Then Jana lifts her head and looks at Aggie curiously. “Can we do this again?”
But instead of answering, Aggie places her hand on the back of Jana’s head to pull her down and close the distance between them with another kiss.
