Chapter Text
Christine’s eyes slowly blinked open as she woke. It was still dark outside, little light coming from behind the curtains in her room. She realized what she had waken up to— clanging— from the kitchen. She sighed and began to pull the covers off of her, and scooted over to the side of her bed, wiping her eyes and standing up. Her short brown hair lay at her shoulders, dark and tangled.
She slowly opened the door and began walking to the kitchen, where the sound was coming from.
There, she found her roommate, Felix, making himself food.
“You’re not very quiet…” Christine sleepily called from the hallway.
Felix turned around to look at her for a second, light reflecting off of his snakebite piercings from a nightlight in the hallway. He didn’t say anything, and just turned back around to the counter where he was putting ice cream in his bowl. His hair was messy, but it suited him. It was kind of cute…
“…Anyways, what are you doing up? It’s…” Christine turned to look at the clock on the wall in the living room.
“Felix, it’s 2 AM. I think you should be sleeping.”
“Why? I have nothing to do tomorrow, can a guy not stay up and do what he wants?”
Christine sighed and walked into the kitchen, and settled on a stool at the counter, facing Felix.
“What?” Felix asked, with an annoyed tone.
“Can you make me a bowl of ice cream, too? Or—“
“Nope. I’m not making you shit.” Felix interrupted.
He put the lid back on the ice cream container and left the scooper in the sink, not even rinsed off. He walked down the hallway and into his room, a proud smirk on his face. He loudly shut the door behind him. He didn’t slam it, but just carelessly closed it.
That stupid smirk.
This was going to be a long summer.
That following morning, Christine woke up again, this time the sun shining through her curtains. She groaned and turned to her nightstand, picking up her phone and checking the time.
It was 9:57, and she had plans at 11. She got up from her bed again, and headed to the bathroom.
The apartment was quiet, Felix must’ve been asleep still. Christine brushed her teeth, washed her face, and brushed out her tangled hair. She headed back to her room to get dressed.
Felix opened his eyes, a long inhale through his nose. He noticed his laptop next to him, the screen black. He must’ve fell asleep with it on.
Still lying down, he stretched for a moment before closing his eyes again. His right arm was under his pillow, his left arm resting at his side.
He thought about getting up, but he really didn’t want to. He lied there for a few more minutes before finally sitting up, his dark hair a mess. He closed his laptop and threw his legs to the edge of the bed. The clock on his wall read 11:21.
Felix got up and opened his bedroom door, closing it behind him carelessly, similar to the time earlier this morning. He walked to the bathroom to brush his teeth.
When he came out, he walked into the kitchen to get a cup of water. He glanced over to the front door and realized Christine’s purse and keys were gone. Hm, weird. She didn’t tell him she had plans today. He felt a little disappointed she hadn’t told him. But why did he care?
Felix went back into his room and flopped into his desk chair. Their apartment was in the city, and Felix’s desk was right in front of his bedroom window. He opened the curtains and rolled up the blinds to see outside.
It was a beautiful day, but blazing hot. He could tell by the way it looked outside, and the people walking on the sidewalks. It looked absolutely miserable out there.
He sat there for a moment, watching cars drive by and people walking around. He turned his head to look at the calendar on his wall. He had work on Monday. Today was Saturday. He groaned and murmured to himself,
“God, I hate my fucking job.”
Just thinking about it made him angry. He worked as a cashier at a cafe. It was the only job that sounded somewhat decent to him, and it payed enough. He hated it because his co-workers were annoying, and so were the people that order. He hated talking to random people.
Christine was at a thing for work, her boss had been talking for ages. Why was she even here? She didn’t know, it was a discussion about the hours they worked, kind of like a real life survey. It was stupid.
When it was finally over, she walked out of the building. The sun was blinding and hot. She made it into her car and checked her phone.
She had 3 messages from Felix.
“chris where are you”
“you didn’t tell me you had to go somewhere today”
“hellooooo?? ignoring isn’t nice 😿😿”
She sighed, messaging him back. He always used those fuckass cat emojis.
“Sorry Felix, I had to do something for work. I’ll be home in like 10 minutes.”
Felix, who was sprawled across the couch in the living room now, heard a buzz come from his phone. He picked it up and realized it was from Christine. He read the message.
“cool. next time tell me when you’re going somewhere dumbass” he replied.
He scoffed and put his phone back down beside him.
Why did he even care if she had to go anywhere or not? Whatever, It didn’t matter. Maybe she should’ve told him.
About 10 minutes later, the lock on the front door turned and Christine came through the door. Felix was still on the couch, and he turned his head towards her, pausing the TV.
“Uh, sorry I didn’t tell you I had to go somewhere,” Christine said, kicking off her shoes. “I didn’t think you’d really care.” She said suspiciously.
Oh. Felix silently panicked for a second, before replying.
“I don’t. I thought you got kidnapped or something.” He said sarcastically. Christine had her hair down, and she was wearing a dark red shirt and jean shorts. Felix stared at her for a few moments.
Ew. Why was he staring?
“Yeah, okay.”
Christine sat down next to him on the couch and got on her phone.
“Well, how was the work thing? Did they tell you how bad you are?” Felix teased.
Christine didn’t even look up from her phone.
“Ouch, Chris, I told you ignoring isn’t nice.”
Still nothing. He sighed and turned back to the TV. He knows she could hear him.
Suddenly, it was quiet. He had turned off the TV.
Then, Christine looked up, and turned her head to him.
“Oh, so now you acknowledge me.”
He snatched her phone from her hands and threw it on the cushion next to him.
“Oops.”
“What was that for, asshole?!” Christine cried.
Felix didn’t answer.
She lunged at him, but he caught her by her arms. Felix began to laugh, but Christine was angry.
“What’s so important on there?” He teased. “Nothing is more important than me, I’m the best.”
Christine sighed.
Felix reached for her phone, then looked at the screen for a second.
“Wait, no—“
Christine snatched it back. Felix was shocked from what he had seen and turned to her, his face slightly flushed.
“Wait a second… did I see that right?” Felix asked.
Christine paused.
That night, they ate dinner at the counter in silence. Usually they talk about how much they hate their jobs, or just anything.
But today, they ate without saying a single word.
Finally, Christine decided to speak up.
“Hey, Felix ,”She turned her head to him.
Felix turned his head too.
“Uh, about earlier, can we talk about it…?”
Felix just stared at her. What was there even to say?
“Yeah.”
“So, what if… I told you it was true?”
Felix almost choked.
“You—Wait…” Felix stared at his plate.
Was he gonna make a joke of her? Laugh at her? Worse?
“Yeah, I like you, Felix.”
Earlier, when they had been sitting together, Christine was messaging one of her friends, Emily, for some advice. Christine had liked Felix for quite some time. They have been living together for 2 years. They were friends in high school, and had nowhere to go after college, so they bought an apartment together.
“I’m not good at this, Chris. But…” Felix paused. “I like you too.”
Later that night, they went to their rooms early. They both couldn’t stop thinking about what just happened. Eventually, they both fell asleep.
Felix woke up to a knock on his door.
“Go away, I’m sleeping.”
“Felix— I need to talk to you.”
Right. He had forgotten about yesterday. He got up and opened the door.
Christine looked up at him, seeing him sleepy made her blush a little.
She hadn’t realized she’d been standing there for a while, before Felix pulled her inside.
“Uh, sorry. I just wanted to talk about…”
“Oh. Yeah. We can talk about it.”
“Please don’t be mad… I don’t wanna make you upset or uncomfortable about this, I know it’s weird. I can explain I promise. I just….” Christine was talking fast. She was worried. Felix didn’t want to hear any more. “So, I just wanted to ta—“
She was interrupted by Felix’s lips. She was shocked, but kissed him back. The kiss wasn’t perfect, but it was comforting for Christine.
He pulled away, looking at her. She didn’t move, she just did the same and looked at him. Felix began to apologize before she kissed him this time. This kiss was a bit different, still comforting, but less careful.
Felix pulled away again. “You do not understand how long I’ve wanted to do that.”
“Ew, Felix!” She laughed. “You’re gross…” Christine lightly shoved his right shoulder.
