Chapter 1: Journey to the Shore

Chapter Text

Hyunjin hated packing.

His hoodies were too big for his bag, so he could only fit a few, and his sketchbook only fit if he took one of those out.

Packing was just unnecessary, really. Not to mention, he also needed to pack shirts, and socks, and underwear.

A tiny backpack just wasn’t enough for that.

With a sigh, he pushed a hand through his hair and sat on his bed. He looked down at the fluffy blanket, slowly digging his fingers into the surface.

The spot beside him dipped slightly as Felix flopped onto the bed.

Felix immediately clung to him, resting his head on Hyunjin’s shoulder and wrapping an arm around the tallers waist.

Hyunjin rolled his eyes and tried to escape the youngers grasp, “Stop it!”

“Why?” Felix whined, but he gave Hyunjin a little space.

Felix took a breath, “Hey, this is our first trip together, alone!” He smiled

“So?” Hyunjin kept playing with the blanket.

Felix just chuckled softly, resting his head on Hyunjin’s shoulder again. When Hyunjin tried to pull away, Felix took his hand.

Hyunjin just relented with a furrow of his brows, turning his head to look at Felix for a moment before looking back at the blanket.

Felix was anxious. He tapped the back of his phone with a thrumming hand as he texted Hyunjin.

10:03 AM

(Felix) : When are you getting here????

(Hyunjin) : I’m almost there.

“Damn it Hyunjin…” He murmured softly.

His head shot up as quick footsteps pounded against concrete, along with panting breath.

“I’m-“ Hyunjin gasped for air, propping his body on his knees with his hands, “So sorry I’m late!”

“Hyunjin!” Felix scolded, pouting. “Do you know what time it is?” He lightly hit Hyunjin’s shoulder. “We’re gonna be late idiot!” He whined.

Hyunjin blinked, standing up. “What did you call me?–“

“Shut up! We need to go!” Felix interlaced their fingers and pulled him along.

Hyunjin gasped as he stumbled into a run, “Woah!—Felix!”

“It’s your fault you made us late!” Felix kept running.

They pounded up the stairs extremely fast, Hyunjins feet almost hurt with the impact of the floor to his feet.

It was his fault for being late though.

But he was doing something important. He was making a gift for Felix. Felix’s birthday was in five days, so he had five days to paint Felix a picture.

Hyunjin’s never gave anyone a picture before. Nothing he’d painted. It was…a little personal.

“Hyunjin!” Felix’s voice dragged him away from his trance, they were at the doors of the train.

Hyunjin was thinking.

Not about important things, just…things.

Felix nudged his shoulder, “Hey.”

Hyunjin didn’t respond.

“Hey!” Felix shook him.

“What?” Hyunjin turned to face Felix, his tone was a little sharper than what he wanted, but Felix just gave a tight lip smile.

“Let’s talk!” Felix asked.

“I don’t want to.” Hyunjin cocked a brow and turned to face the seat in front of him.

Felix whined and threw his head back onto his seat.

Hyunjin turned his head, before leaning forward.

“Felix.”

“Yeahh?” Felix drawled.

“You smell like Febreze…” Hyunjin rolled his eyes, “Try washing your clothes.

“Why does it matter to you.” Felix pouted, turning his head to face the window.

Hyunjin just smiled.

Felix gasped, leaning closer to the window and putting his hands on the slightly cold glass.

“Hyunjin, look!”

“I can’t see if you’re covering the entire view, Felix.”

Felix ducted out of the way.

Oh wow.

The sky was a beautiful pallid shade of gray, with whispy clouds covering the space, and the ocean was almost completely clear, filled with hints of blue and rocks dotting the beach.

They both took a breath almost in sync.

Hyunjin hesitated for a moment, before resting his head on Felix’s shoulder, closing his eyes.

Felix looked down at him, smiling wide. Felix slowly slid his hand into Hyunjins.

Felix was still clutching Hyunjin’s hand, but Hyunjin quickly broke away the grasp.

Felix grabbed Hyunjin’s arm with a frown.

“Stop,” Hyunjin ordered. “People might see.”

Felix gestured to the beach around them, “Nobody’s here.”

Hyunjin looked around warily before Felix started speaking again.

“And, who cares if they see? We aren’t ever going to see them again.”

Hyunjin just scoffed as Felix cuddled closer to him.

“What do we do now?” Hyunjin asked.

Felix exclaimed as they ran into the sea, jumping back as the current met his feet.

They both ran back as the tide receded.

“Why are we doing this?” Hyunjin asked, exasperated.”

“I don’t know, just do it!” Felix grinned.

Felix ran back into the ocean again.

Hyunjin smiled slyly and ran up to Felix, pushing him down into the water.

Felix grunted as he fell on his back, quickly sitting up.

Hyunjin pointed at his face and laughed.

Felix sat up, looking at his hand.

Hyunjin’s smile turned into a frown, “Are you okay?”

Felix didn’t respond, he just kept looking at his hand.”

Hyunjin ran up to Felix, taking his hand with his palm.

Felix had a circular cut on his palm, Hyunjin put his mouth on it and started sucking the blood.

Hyunjin pulled back after a little, his eyes assessing the wound, before his eyes landed somewhere else.

On Felix’s wrist.

Oh.

Oh no.

Felix had a few red inflamed lines running across his wrist, about four of them. They weren’t big, but they were obvious.

Hyunjin ran his thumb along the end of one, looking up to meet Felix’s eyes. Felix didn’t look at him.

“Felix…”

“His hand got cut,” Hyunjin talked to the shopkeeper.

“We need uh…” He racked his brain, “Dressing, ointment, bandages, iodine….”

“And condoms!” Felix piped.

Hyunjin whipped his head to look at Felix, “What the fuck?” He mouthed silently

Felix just smiled

The two boys sat on a bed of rocks near the beach, Hyunjin was wrapping the white bandages around Felix’s hand,

When he finished the hand, he hesitated.

Should he wrap Felix’s wrist…?

He quickly extended the wrapping to Felix’s wrist and finished it off.

“Done.” Hyunjin pressed his lips into a fine line, slapping Felix’s hand.

“Ouch!” Felix whined, “That hurt.”

Hyunjin avoided looking at Felix, “Serves you right for running around like that.”

“Wait a minute…” Felix paused, “You were the one who pushed me!”

Hyunjin didn’t respond.

“You know,” Felix started, Hyunjin turned to look at him. “When you were sucking the blood from my hand, it made me want to kiss you.”

“You’re crazy.” Hyunjin responded.

Felix just grinned, looking at Hyunjin expectantly.

Hyunjin blinked, oh.

Felix wanted him to kiss him.

Hyunjin leaned in slowly, quickly pressing his lips to Felix’s then pulling back.

“There.” Hyunjin said, turning to face away from Felix.

“That’s it?”

Felix sighed, grabbed Hyunjin’s shoulder and forced him to face him.

Felix lunged forward and suctioned his lips to Hyunjin’s, he moved so quickly he almost bit Hyunjin’s lip.

He pulled back with a gasp and a smile on his face, “That’s more like it!”

“You’re such an idiot.” Hyunjin argued playfully.

Felix smiled.

“Okay so…what do you wanna do now?”

Felix thought about it for a moment, “To see a movie!”

“What? We can do that in Seoul.”

“But we never do, do we?” Felix tilted his head.

Hyunjin sprinted across the road, shaking the rain from his hair.

Felix, in vain, tried to cover his head with a hand.

Hyunjin sighed as he and Felix went for cover under the bus station.

Felix was looking out of the window, though there wasn’t much to see.

It was all just rain on the window, really.

Hyunjin examined him.

Hyunjin slowly slid his hand over and took Felix’s hand.

Felix looked up at him, to find Hyunjin was already looking at him. Hyunjin looked away quickly.

Felix snorted.

Felix took his hand and put it onto his backpack, holding it closer.

Felix tapped his thumb against the pad of Hyunjin’s pointer finger.

“She’s tough.” Felix said as the ticket agent sent another person away.

“I don’t think it’s going to work, let’s just see something else…” Hyunjin muttered

Felix put his hand on Hyunjin’s shoulder, “I got this.”

“Two tickets for the realm of the sense, please.”

The girl looked up from her phone, “You’re an adult?”

Felix took out an ID from his pocket and set it on the counter. “I am.”

The girl picked it up, “Christopher, born 1997?”

“Yep.”

“You sure that’s you?”

“Yep!”

“What’s your Chinese birth animal?”

“What?…” Felix turned to look at Hyunjin.

“What’s your sign?”

When Felix didn’t answer, the girl lifted up the ID and gave it back to Felix.

“That was so embarrassing!” Felix whined as he walked on the stone guardrail.

Hyunjin laughed.

“I’m hungry, Hyunjin.”

Felix hopped down, “How about sashimi and soju!”

Hyunjin raised an eyebrow, “You have that kind of money?”

“Trust me, let’s go!” Felix threw an arm over Hyunjins shoulder.

“Seriously? Let’s just have ramen and gimbap.”

“Okay, okay. But maybe let’s buy a bottle of soju?”

“Felix, we can’t drink soju. Remember? We aren’t underage.”

Hyunjin looked out across the water that was now black with the night. “We’re so broke.” He sighed.

Hyunjin took a sip of soju.

Felix also picked up the soju, but he started chugging it.

Hyunjin shot a hand up to take it away from Felix’s mouth, “You’re not supposed to drink it like that!”

Felix grimaced, “It tastes terrible!”

“You’re an idiot.” Hyunjin grabbed a handful of chips and made Felix eat them.

Felix giggled, swaying slightly.

Hyunjin just stared at him, “Wow. You really can’t hold your alcohol.”

Felix smiled, leaning a head on his hand.

“Let’s go back to Seoul,” Hyunjin tapped Felix’s shoulder.

“No!” Felix exclaimed, grabbing Hyunjin’s hand and  pulling his body closer.

“Why not?”

“Let’s stay a little longer…”

Felix rested his head on Hyunjin’s shoulder.

“You know what?”

“What?” Hyunjin replied

“I have a question.”

“What is it?” Hyunjin asked.

“Why are you being so nice to me today?”

Hyunjin paused.

“You have something to tell me, right Hyunjin?”

“…Yeah.”

“What is it, then?”

Hyunjin took a breath, “Look, Felix.”

“Yeah?” Felix drawled.

“I’ve thought about this for a while.” Hyunjin paused. “I think we should stop seeing eachother.”

Hyunjin stood up, throwing his bag over his shoulder.

Felix just sat there.
